Police in Ontario found hundreds of illicit cannabis plants in a vehicle while conducting a commercial motor vehicle inspection on July 13.

Wellington County OPP said the inspections were part of its Operations Safe Driver Week program. The vehicle entered an inspection area in Arthur, Ontario where approximately 300 plants were found in black pots in a vegetative state.

Police say they have charged 58-year-old Wai Sun Yeung from Stouffville, Ontario with possession of more than four cannabis plants, distribution of more than four cannabis plants contrary to the Cannabis Act as well as driving a commercial motor vehicle without a valid CVOR certificate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Canada’s federal Cannabis Act allows people to transport up to four non-flowering cannabis plants (for personal use) in a public space, as well as grow up to four cannabis plants per household. Some provincial restrictions also apply.

Licensed commercial growers are also allowed to transport plants with proper authorization.
