A special, but illicit, cannabis delivery came to an abrupt stop when the drone transporting the banned bud slammed into an Ohio home.

At about 10:30 pm on Dec. 27, deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home in Mansfield, Ohio to investigate the failed delivery bid after an unintended recipient heard the crash, found the package attached to the beeping drone and called police, according to WOIO.

Citing a sheriff’s report, News 5 Cleveland reports a 17-year-old resident of the home heard the collision. She then found the crashed drone, which had its onboard lights covered in duct tape in an apparent attempt to keep the delivery incognito.

Crashing into the home, however, eliminated any possibility of a surreptitious transfer. Once officers arrived on the scene, they found an unidentified number of bags of cannabis inside the package being transported, as well as some loose tobacco, two cellphones and chargers, per News 19.

Citing Richland County Sheriff Captain Donald Zehner, the station reports that the estimated value of the drone was US$2,100 ($2,667). “If anybody is missing it and wants to claim it they can come to the sheriff’s office,” Zehner said.

Per Joslyn Law Firm, possessing less than 100 grams of cannabis in Ohio is treated as a minor misdemeanour carrying just a US$150 ($190.50) fine. While possession of more than 100 grams, but less than 200 grams, is also a misdemeanour, the fine increases to US$250 ($317.50) and up to 30 days of jail time is also a possibility. Possessing any amount of weed exceeding 200 grams is a felony.

News 5 Cleveland points out that the Mansfield Correctional Institute and the Richland Correctional Institution are less than three kilometres away from the home.

Although no direct connection to the correctional centres has been noted, drones have repeatedly been used around the world to ferry contraband into these facilities.

Just last month, two U.K. men were arrested for a scheme involving writing paper soaked in a solution of synthetic drugs being posted to 10 prisons. After raiding two homes, police seized a drone, several “micro” mobile phones and several litres of a solvent used to dissolve drugs.

This summer, two Mississippi men looking to provide friends in jail with some creature comforts, including cannabis, were charged after their high-flying attempt to deliver the goods by drone was unceremoniously grounded.

Other failed attempts to deliver cannabis contraband have occurred in, among other places, Kingston, Ont., Ohio and Georgia.
