Per ABC News, people caught carrying food, drinks and other items with cannabis into the country for the first time no longer face automatic jail time. The country strictly prohibits the sale and trafficking of drugs, with drug use punishable by four years in jail.

The minimum sentence for first-time drug offenders was also reduced from two years to three months.

It’s not the first time that attempts to hide cannabis in food items have turned rotten.

Earlier this year, a cereal caper led authorities to a man in Kentucky after he mailed Lucky Charms cereal boxes stuffed with cannabis to an address in the U.K.

Drug-sniffing dog Kary alerted U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to the package, which contained 1.8 kilograms of cannabis.

Last year, a man in his 20s was charged after police in Ireland discovered more than $2.9 million of cannabis hidden in boxes of chilli peppers. The investigation kicked off after reports of “unusual activity” on a local road.

After inspecting a nearby storage facility, officers recovered approximately 121 kilograms of cannabis mixed in with boxes of vegetables.

In Hong Kong, an attempt to smuggle cannabis in 2021 was all bark and no bite after officers seized approximately $4.16 million worth of cannabis flower hidden inside bags of dog food.
