Illinois legalized recreational cannabis in 2020 and adults over age 21 can legally possess, consume and purchase the plant, however they are limits.

Public consumption of cannabis remains illegal, as does consumption in any vehicle, moving or not. Cannabis purchased in the state cannot be transported to another state.

Illinois residents are allowed to possess a maximum of 30 grams of pot, while non-residents are limited to 15 grams.

It’s not the first time that speeding has led to a large drug bust.

Last year in Nebraska, a routine traffic stop near turned into a record-setting cannabis bust for the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office after a vehicle was stopped for speeding.

The responding officer deployed a K-9 unit, which caught a whiff of something inside the U-Haul trailer that was being towed by the vehicle. Upon further inspection, the officer located 358 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis with a total weight of nearly 181 kilograms.

Two men were arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver and taken into custody at Saunders County Correctional Facility. “This is probably the largest case that I can ever recall, and I’ve been around here a number of years,” said Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz.

In 2018, police in Manitoba made a record-setting traffic bust after stopping a semi-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Ontario border. Inspecting the load, officers found 455 kg of cannabis and 34 kg of oils, edibles and other products, mixed in among legitimate food products.
