Five independently owned cannabis companies in Manitoba are striving to reduce their environmental footprints and trim operational costs by joining forces and using a single, dedicated facility for their packaging and delivery needs.

Called “The TobaRolling Syndicate,”, the alliance is a testament to the companies’ “commitment to Manitoba’s cannabis customers, dispensaries and the local brands they represent,” notes a joint statement this week.

Alliance members are Alicanto Gardens, Cypress Craft, Kief Cannabis, Natural Earth Craft Cannabis and TobaGrown.

“We are very excited to cooperatively align with our independent partners to expand our footprint in the Manitoba cannabis space,” notes Tim Doerksen, director of Natural Earth Craft Cannabis.

Prior to forming the alliance, all five companies were packaging and delivering their cannabis products separately.

That will soon change so all products are packaged at Kief Cannabis’ facility in Selkirk and delivered to dispensaries together — each pot shop need only make one order for products from the five companies.

“With no limits on processing or expansion capabilities, our facility places this alliance in a strong position for growth,” suggests company founder Jesse Denton.

The alliance aims to be fully operational by early August.

Beyond the local focus, the new syndicate aims to simplify the ordering process for dispensary partners. “It will cut down on our environmental impact by consolidating all of our products into a single shipment from within Manitoba,” says TobaGrown founder Jesse Lavoie.

And then there are costs. Per CBC News, Lavoie reported the tab for shipping two kilograms of flower to Ontario to get it processed and sending it back to a pot shop in Manitoba is roughly $1,000.

Doerksen estimates that by minimizing or sharing costs, he expects a 20 per cent savings on that portion of his business, he told CBC.

TobaGrown announced in early 2022 that as part of its support of allowing cannabis to be grown at home — Manitoba, and Quebec ban the practice despite federal rules allowing four plants per dwelling — the company was launching a line of not-for-profit cannabis products in Manitoba.

“All of TobaGrown’s profits will be used to fund our legal bills for our cases, with all remaining profits being donated to multiple local and national charities,” Lavoie announced at the time.

Another Manitoba-based company, Delta 9 Cannabis Inc., claimed to have made another local first this past spring. The company reported in April that a subsidiary has secured an agreement with Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation to become what it believed was the province’s first licensed cannabis distributor.

Under the agreement, Delta 9 noted it “intends to work with authorized cannabis suppliers to provide cross-docking and distribution services, fulfilling delivery of orders to licensed cannabis retailers” in Manitoba.
