A medical cannabis shipment weighing 2.125 metric tons (2,125 kilograms) was delivered from Johannesburg, South Africa to Skopje, North Macedonia on Dec. 25.

It is believed to be the largest-ever shipment of legal cannabis.

Virginia-based Instadose Pharma Corp, a cultivation, production and global distribution company for medicinal cannabis and cannabinoid oil, was behind the shipment.

According to a news release, the product has been sold and is destined for licensed pharmaceutical clients in the European Union.

“This is a historic shipment and represents just the beginning of Instadose Pharma’s potential,” Grant Sanders, founder and chairman of Instadose, said in a statement. “This delivery validates our business model and Instadose Pharma Corp as a global leader in this industry,” Sanders added.

The company’s distribution platform operates across North America, Africa, Europe, Asia and South America.

Alberta-based Aurora Cannabis also recently completed a historic cannabis shipment, sending approximately $10 million worth of cannabis to Israel. According to a news release, it’s believed to be the largest shipment of medical cannabis to Israel to date.

Delivered in December, the company has a growing presence in Israel, where medical cannabis has been legal since the early 1990s and recreational use is partially decriminalized.

“It’s an exciting time for the global cannabis industry, as we’re seeing growing acceptance and thoughtful regulation of both medical and adult-use cannabis across Europe and in key markets like Israel,” Miguel Martin, Aurora’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

“With strong local relationships, as well as support from our patients and consumers, we look forward to continuing to expand our international business to complement our total cannabis portfolio,” Martin said.

Aurora also recently signed on to participate in the Controlled Cannabis Supply Chain Experiment, an adult-use pilot program in the Netherlands.

According to the Dutch government, the purpose of the experiment is to determine if and how controlled cannabis can be legally supplied to coffee shops and what the effects of this would be. The experiment is planned to last four years, with ongoing evaluations. Afterward, the government will decide on the future of Dutch coffee shop policy.

In November, Aurora acquired an equity stake in Growery B.V., one of 10 companies licensed to participate in the experiment.
