The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Legare recently offloaded about 11,204 kilograms of cocaine and 1,765 kg of cannabis estimated to be worth US$475 million (about $632 million) at Base Miami Beach.

The drugs were interdicted in the international waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean by crews from several U.S. and partner vessels, notes a statement from the USCG.

Through coordinated interagency efforts, “we significantly contributed to the counter-drug mission and the dismantling of transnational criminal organizations,” says Cdr. Jeremy Greenwood, commanding officer of Legare, an 82-metre, medium endurance cutter stationed in Portsmouth, Vir.

“The drugs seized through this coordinated effort will result in significantly fewer drug-related overdoses,” said Greenwood, whose ship patrols offshore waters from Maine to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean.

Joint efforts to combat criminal organizations are required, from detection to monitoring, interdiction, apprehension and prosecution, the USCG adds.

Though a massive haul, the interdiction was even larger this past February. At that time, the USCG announced it had intercepted slightly more than $1.3 billion worth of cocaine and cannabis.

The catch from the international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea was the result of 23 separate suspected drug smuggling interdictions by five USCG cutters and four other partner vessels.

In another massive bust announced in November 2021, USCGC Hamilton off-loaded almost 12 tonnes of cocaine and almost two tonnes of cannabis in Florida that had a combined estimated value of approximately $640 million.

And a few months earlier in August, the crew of USCG Cutter James delivered 27,079 kg of cocaine and 649 kg of cannabis, valued at about $1.8 billion.
