“I’ve dedicated my life and career to giving back and paving the way for minorities,” Ice T said in a press release. “As a New Jersey native, I’m excited for the opportunity legalization offers our community, and I look forward to ushering in a new era for cannabis in the state,” he added.

The rapper made the comments as part of his announcement this week that he has received the green light for a recreational cannabis dispensary in Jersey City and expects the pot shop to open its doors sometime this fall.

The Jersey City Cannabis Control Board “establishes and enforces the rules and regulations governing the licensing, cultivation, testing and selling” of cannabis, the statement notes.

Cannabis retailers are allowed only in certain zoning districts, according to the City of Jersey City. The application process includes first submitting required “affidavits and supplemental forms, reports and other documents needed to process your application,” the board notes, adding that a US$2,500 escrow check must also be provided to kick-start the process.

No word on whether or not things have changed, but back in 2015, the rapper tweeted: “Ice Fact: I have zero tattoos. Have never smoked weed or cigarettes. And don’t drink alcohol … Now THATS Gangsta …”

He does, however, seem to support people having access to cannabis if they so choose.

The dispensary is a joint venture with longtime friend and cannabis expert Charis B (Charis Burrett), founder of the cannabis brand and dispensary, The Medicine Woman. The company was founded in California in 2015 as a non-profit delivery service.

That pairing, Ice T points out, will help “to ensure a premium experience for our customers and community.”

The Medicine Woman Jersey City will have 5,000 square feet of retail space housing New Jersey cannabis brands, limited edition merchandise, education and inspiration.

As for keeping it local when it comes to staff, the dispensary is currently accepting applications for employment for a variety of positions. It is also committed to “sourcing a local workforce with a focus on providing opportunities for former cannabis offenders,” the press release states.

“Medicine Woman Jersey City is committed to sourcing staff from the local community and has partnered with several local charitable organizations,” with partnerships to date including The Last Prisoner Project, Jersey City Mural and Arts Program, Jersey City Employment and Training Program and Hudson County Community College.

“We are passionately devoted to providing access to safe, affordable and quality plant medicinal remedies,” Charis B. says in the statement, adding that the new shop represents “a meaningful extension of our mission.”

The sale of adult-use cannabis kicked off in New Jersey on Apr. 21.

On that day, there were 12 participating dispensaries open for business. And the stores definitely did good business, with the Cannabis Regulatory Commission reporting their gross sales amounted to $2.4 million for the cannabis and cannabis products sold to 12,438 customers.
