An Alabama man apparently wanted to cover all the bases, with marijuana, methamphetamine and moonshine discovered in his home this week.

According to WAFF, officers with the Jackson County and DeKalb County narcotics units made the discovery during a search of the 40-year-old’s home in Dutton, Ala. There they found cannabis, meth, drug paraphernalia, a moonshine still and untaxed moonshine.

Specifically, per Huntsville Real-Time News, the officers discovered two-and-a-half gallons (9.5 litres) of moonshine, a pound (454 grams) of cannabis and two ounces (56 grams) of meth.

The man has been charged with drug trafficking, possession of a still, possession of cannabis, possession of tax-paid alcoholic beverages for private use and possession of drug paraphernalia, the paper reports.

The accused’s bond was set at US$30,800 ($39,424), WAFF reports.

In the state, possessing pot for personal use is a misdemeanour punishable by up to a year in jail and a US$6,000 ($7,680) fine, according to Find Law. That said, selling, delivering or distributing marijuana and other drugs or controlled substances is illegal and, for cannabis, can result in two to 10 years in prison and a US$30,000 ($38,400) fine.

With regard to the moonshine, Distillate reports that Alabama has both wet and dry counties. “It is legal to own a still for non-spirit making usages such as essential oils or distilling water in wet counties,” the website explains.

But in dry counties, “ownership of a still for any reason is illegal as is legal production and sale of spirits.” Even in wet counties, “it is illegal to manufacture moonshine or to possess a still for the production of spirits.”

It’s not the first time people have come out on the wrong side of marijuana and moonshine mixes.

Earlier this month in Oklahoma, a 42-year-old man was arrested following a dramatic standoff with police after two large moonshine stills and an illegal cannabis grow were found on his rural property.

The man had threatened to commit suicide, with police reporting shots were heard from inside the home, but the suspect eventually surrendered, according to KOCO News.

This past spring, also in Oklahoma, News 9 reported that three people were arrested after a police raid revealed methamphetamine, marijuana and a home moonshine still.

And more than three years ago in Pennsylvania, state police there announced they were investigating an illegal cannabis and moonshine operation.
