Dutch police were surprised to find a hidden cannabis grow inside an Arnhem home after receiving a tip that they believe was courtesy of the very suspect who sought to burgle the house, but reportedly left without any of the homeowner’s possessions.

An Instagram post notes that when officers arrived to investigate the reported “surprise” on Jan. 1, they had no trouble gaining access to the home since the door was still open. Checking things out, the police did a walk-around of the home’s top floor and found what the post refers to as “a working cannabis farm.”

“The entire house had been turned upside down and we strongly suspect that the burglar himself made the report,” states the post.

Although it does not include specific amounts, the post notes that “a considerable amount of drugs” was found and that the grow-op has since been destroyed.

As it stands, police have not yet spoken to the property owner, but, “of course would like to get in touch with him or her to hear his side of this special story.”

Noting that the would-be burglar may have had good intentions, the post emphasizes, nonetheless, that cannabis farms can be fire hazards that put at risk both growers and others.

The Government of the Netherlands reports that it is a criminal offence to possess, produce or deal drugs, whether they be hard or soft drugs. While it is not a criminal offence for those 18 and older to use drugs, “municipal authorities may include a provision in their general municipal by-laws prohibiting drug use in designated areas,” the government information states.

While growing weed is not allowed, if a grow has five or fewer weed plants, “it will be assumed that there is no question of any professional trade or business being conducted,” the government adds.

It’s hardly the first time police investigating one crime discovered another, something that seems to happen fairly frequently in the U.K.

Last summer, police responding to a burglary at a house ended up finding a cannabis grow with about 50 plants in the attic.

In November of 2020, police probing a reported theft at a disused warehouse found more than 1,100 plants estimated to be worth over £500,000 ($865,000).

And two months before that, in September of 2020, two men were arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis after a police investigation of a burglary at a commercial building revealed an illegal grow-op.

Recreational cannabis continues to be illegal throughout the U.K.
