On May 6, 2023, a man driving a box truck in Burlington, Ontario was pulled over by officials with the Ministry of Transportation. Upon inspection of the vehicle, they discovered 416 cannabis plants.
The Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Highway Safety Division tweeted that Burlington OPP attended the scene to assist. A Markham man was charged with drug trafficking.
Canadians are allowed to grow up to four cannabis plants at home (except in Manitoba and Quebec), and can transport up to four non-flowering plants at a time. Those authorized to grow medical cannabis may also have approval to transport plants from one location to another.
In 2022, Wellington County OPP found hundreds of cannabis plants during a vehicle inspection.
In that instance, police say they have charged a 58-year-old man from Stouffville, Ontario with possession of more than four cannabis plants, distribution of more than four cannabis plants contrary to the Cannabis Act as well as driving a commercial motor vehicle without a valid CVOR certificate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
