When agents moved in, the vehicle took off, only to be located a short time later near a local junkyard. When the officers attempted to stop the still-moving vehicle, the driver jumped out and crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of about 160 kilograms of cannabis, valued at $225,000.

It was a fairly familiar story for Texas border agents this past spring.

In May, the driver of a van loaded down with nearly 220 kilograms of pot drove the vehicle into the Rio Grande before swimming across to Mexico after a short pursuit by border patrol.

The vehicle was initially stopped for an immigration inspection as it was believed the vehicle was carrying migrants or narcotics. When the driver failed to yield, the pursuit began, only to end in the river a short time later.

The vehicle was recovered, as were 22 bundles of cannabis valued at $516,000.

In March, another vehicle, this time a Chevrolet Trailblazer, was spotted “making an incursion into the U.S.” by agents with the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol (RGVBP).

When the agents moved in, the vehicle turned around and started heading back toward the river. Agents then observed the driver jump into the water and swim toward Mexico.

An inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of 28 bundles of cannabis weighing 294 kilograms, worth an estimated $648,750.

According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, its RGVBP Sector seized more than 9,525 kilograms of narcotics from Oct. 1, 2021 through Mar. 2022.

“Mexico remains the most significant foreign source for marijuana in the United States; however, in U.S. markets, Mexican marijuana has largely been supplanted by domestic-produced marijuana,” notes a recent report from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration
