Rocky Mountain Cannabis: Setting New Standards in Craft Cannabis

Rocky Mountain Cannabis: Setting New Standards in Craft Cannabis

By Heather Egger

Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, Rocky Mountain Cannabis (RMC) is a beacon of innovation and integrity in the craft cannabis industry. Owned and operated by Tyler Tetreault, this cutting-edge Golden, BC facility is gaining attention for their commitment to quality and award-winning cannabis. Rocky Mountain Cannabis Behind The Label Spotlight 001

A Glimpse into Rocky Mountain Cannabis

Rocky Mountain Cannabis has carved out a unique space in the craft cannabis market, thanks to their high-quality cannabis that stands out for its rich, nuanced flavours and heavy effects. Located in Golden, BC, the facility benefits from abundant fresh mountain water from the Columbia, Kicking Horse, and Blaeberry rivers, which nurtures their indoor-grown plants.

Tyler and his family have deep roots in the town, extending their green thumb beyond cannabis. Their involvement in the community includes running a local garden center, a non-profit karate school, and a daycare centre.

What Sets RMC Apart

At the core of RMC’s philosophy are three fundamental values: quality, trust, and integrity. “Trust and integrity are the real standards—every decision we make considers these values first,” says Tyler. Being 100% grower-owned, RMC’s commitment to quality is unwavering.

RMC’s standout strains include Banjo, a 2024 Rosebud Cup second-place winner known for its unique blend of cheese, blueberry, and citrus flavours, and Mercy, a winner at the 2024 BC Craft Farmers Cannabis Summit. The strain’s name highlights its high myrcene content and is an educational tool for consumers learning about terpenes.

Overcoming Challenges

Operating in a market that often prioritizes potency and price over quality, Tyler faces the challenge of educating consumers about the broader benefits of cannabis. “Consumers are missing out on some great weed when they focus on just THC,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of overall plant health and growth. “We want to maximize all 315 compounds that occur in cannabis, not just one or two,” he says.

Balancing quality with the need to scale operations is another challenge, but these two goals are inseparable for Tyler. Expansion at RMC is carefully managed to ensure that their high standards of craft quality remain intact.

The Story Behind the Brand

Tyler’s journey into the cannabis industry began at Olds College, where he studied horticulture. He started a greenhouse and garden center alongside his wife Pamela, eventually expanding into Rocky Mountain Cannabis. Their brand is guided by principles of quality, trust, and integrity, with a strong emphasis on ensuring consistency and building consumer trust.

Sustainability is also a pragmatic part of RMC’s operation. The team is dedicated to reusing, recycling, and reducing waste, maximizing resources while minimizing their environmental footprint.

Looking ahead, RMC is poised for growth. Five new cultivars are waiting to hit the BC market, and the company plans to expand into Alberta by the end of the year. Additionally, the company is gearing up to bring processing in-house, further enhancing its control over product quality.

Growing with Care

RMC’s cultivation process is a carefully calibrated blend of science and artistry. They use coco as a growing medium enriched with microbes to promote root health. Balanced, clean nutrients are a staple in their cultivation process, ensuring each plant reaches its full potential.

Community-Driven Innovation

Rocky Mountain Cannabis is more than just a producer; they are a community-driven, quality-first brand setting new standards in the craft cannabis industry. Keep an eye on their upcoming releases as they continue to grow and innovate in the cannabis space.

Q: What role do you see Rocky Mountain Cannabis playing in shaping the future of the cannabis industry?

A: Moving forward, our place in this industry is to target those who are hungry for trust and integrity. We are set to make this the industry standard by leading by example, delivering on our commitments, consistently bringing the fire, and redefining what quality means in this maturing industry.

Eastcann’s Innovations: How Collaboration and Hand-Processing Set Them Apart

Eastcann’s Innovations: How Collaboration and Hand-Processing Set Them Apart

By Heather Egger

Eastcann, a prominent player in the craft cannabis market, is making waves with its exceptional indoor cannabis strains. Located in Dartmouth, NS, Eastcann grows and incorporates collaboration with exclusive micro-grow partners to produce high-end, high-quality flower and other cannabis products. We talked to Sean “Chopper” MacDougall, head cultivator at Eastcann and sister brand FOUR54, to learn about this innovative company. We explored its elaborate style, meticulous hand-processing, and advanced growing techniques.

Renowned Cannabis Strains
By building a stream-lined system with some help from micro-growers transitioning from the legacy market, Eastcann grew from a small operation into a prolific craft cannabis phenom. Its current system collaborates with more than 15 exclusive micro-growers across the country that produce many favourite strains, including Cap Jnky, Mango Sour, Platinum Mints, Velvet Z, Animal Face, Chemdozer, Pink Kush, Gastro Pop, Route 66 and Tickle Burger. The company’s strategic in-house grow system ensures a constant supply of high-quality cannabis strains that cater to domestic and international markets. Sister company FOUR54 not only provides cannabis for our international and domestic markets, but provides clones to our exclusive mico-cultivation partners working with-in the EastCann system.

At EastCann’s pheno-hunting facility, “we are always cracking seeds, whether it’s in-house or at one of our exclusive micro-cultivating partners,” MacDougall says. This is no overstatement—Eastcann runs approximately 1,500 phenotypes annually and ultimately identifies four to five standout strains. Their 2025 lineup is locked in, and 2026 is already in the planning stages. This forward-thinking approach ensures a continuous flow of new strains to market. Plus, after such rigorous selection, MacDougall says: “If they make the cut, they are winners.”

Carefully-Selected Flower
Eastcann also distinguishes itself through its innovative multi-site cultivation processes. By carefully selecting genetics, they can choose flower with the highest THC levels, ensuring potency and consistency. Their packaging process is equally precise: large, premium nugs—which MacDougall describes as chonkers—are selected for 1-gram, 3.5-gram, and 7-gram packages, while smaller buds are reserved for all-flower prerolls.

Innovative Growing Techniques
Eastcann’s meticulous growing process starts six weeks before cloning, with mother plants carefully prepped to ensure maximum consistency. This preparation involves careful pruning to create the ideal conditions for healthy and even clones. By cutting all clones at a single facility, Eastcann guarantees uniformity across its network of exclusive micro-growers, ensuring that every plant has the same healthy start.

Eastcann employs advanced techniques such as early micro-topping and strategic pruning before flipping to flower. “Our pruning system is simple.” says MacDougall. “We prune multiple times to make each application more enjoyable for the people working on the plants, and the plants seem to love it as well. We are also constantly trying to create the best product for the hand-trimmers to enjoy working on.”

Easing the Labour Burden
This is one major challenge Eastcann addresses for its exclusive micro-growing partners: the labour-intensive trimming process. To alleviate the burden of labour costs, Eastcann buys flower on the stock from its partners and trims everything in-house. Additionally, Eastcann’s standard growing process involves removing most fan leaves during the final flower stage, reducing the trim team’s workload.

Premium Product Line
Eastcann offers a wide range of premium cannabis products. Of course, they are known for their meticulous flower processing methods, which include hang drying, hand trimming, slow curing, hand weighing, and hand packaging. Eastcann’s live resin cartridges deliver a flavorful experience for those who prefer concentrates, capturing the essence of their top strains, and their soft gels provide a convenient and consistent dosing option. Consumers can look forward to Eastcann’s upcoming infused prerolls, featuring a bead of high-quality live resin inserted into the very center of each joint. This innovative product promises a long-lasting and tasty smoke.

A Standout in Craft Cannabis
Eastcann’s strategic collaborations and meticulous growing and processing techniques ensure it remains at the forefront of the industry, providing reliable, top-quality craft cannabis.

Dabble Cannabis Co.: Leading the Way in Craft Concentrates

Dabble Cannabis Co.: Leading the Way in Craft Concentrates

By Heather Egger

Welcome to “Behind the Label,” where we tell the stories of Canada’s most innovative craft cannabis producers. Today, we feature Dabble Cannabis Co., a standout in the craft cannabis market known for its exceptional extracts. Located in the Cowichan Valley, a unique Mediterranean climatic zone, Dabble grows the sun-grown cannabis used in its single-source products. Their fruity signature strain, Strawberry Jam, won Grow Up’s 2023 Canadian Cannabis Championship in the concentrates category. Plus, CEO Alannah Davis leads Hi Point Guest Ranch, offering cannabis-friendly accommodations, tours, and educational events around their private lake. Join us as we explore the products and practices that make Dabble Cannabis Co. an award-winning craft cannabis company.

Growing Together: Dedication to Education
The Dabble team is driven by their passion for family, cannabis, and a strong commitment to education. The Davis family works closely together to produce their award-winning cannabis into concentrates and operate Hi Point as a cannabis tourism destination. And Alannah’s goal is to continuously educate herself about cannabis and concentrates and share that knowledge with retailers and consumers. This dedication is evident in the events she organizes at Hi Point to support and educate the community. This summer, she and her sister, Chelsea Strang, “The Holistic Cannabis Nurse,” an LPN and accredited holistic cannabis practitioner, hosted a cannabis education retreat.

Uniquely Dabble: Cultivation and Innovation
Dabble stands out in the industry by producing its sun-grown, single-source cannabis, owning the entire supply chain from cultivation to extraction. Their tight focus on producing terpene-rich solventless live rosin also sets them apart. And Hi Point Guest Ranch is growing into a busy cannabis-friendly destination with a lovely bed and breakfast, private lake access, lakeside camping, and event spaces for cannabis-focused gatherings.

Signature Strains: From Strawberry Jam to New Releases
Dabble’s signature strain, Strawberry Jam, is a testament to the meticulous work of their master grower, Ross Butcher, who has spent years hunting for the finest cultivars. This strain is known for its unique fruity aroma, reminiscent of overripe strawberries and Nana’s homemade jam. Alongside Strawberry Jam, Dabble offers live rosins of Hashplant and Dabbleberry (Blueberry Cream). With 12 new strains in the fields, get set to receive small batch releases throughout this year.

Growing Techniques: Quality and Sustainability
Dabble’s cultivation practices are distinctive in that they approach each plant in the field like an indoor plant, ensuring that each one is cared for and pruned removing unnecessary plant material to boost growth. They also employ pesticide-free growing methods, using beneficial and predator insects and companion plants like marigolds and catnip for preventative pest control. They are continuously improving their process to produce their hash, using solventless ice-water extraction to produce live rosin and ensure the highest quality of their product before allowing it out of the facility to market.

Challenges and Successes: Overcoming Obstacles in the Market
Despite the challenges of high administrative burdens and initial difficulty breaking into the BCLDB, Dabble has taken fire. Once it entered the BC market, it doubled the category sales in the province. Alannah advocates for cannabis to be considered an agricultural crop so that cannabis farms can access insurance and tax exemptions available to other farms. She would also like to see the industry come together to work towards a common goal, like reducing onerous red tape and the punishing excise tax structure.

Commitment to Quality, Family, and Innovation
With a foundation rooted in family values, a passion for cannabis, and an unwavering commitment to education, Dabble Cannabis Co. has firmly established itself as a leader in the craft cannabis industry. Their dedication to producing sun-grown, single-source cannabis and solventless concentrates has earned them accolades and a loyal following.

Q. How do you engage with your local community and support local initiatives?
A. We leverage community events as our primary means to connect with our community of consumers and retailers. Each month, we host an event called 420 Church alongside another local farm welcoming enthusiasts and newbies alike to enjoy cannabis, community, food and prizes and to give back to different charitable organizations. We are also often hosting dab-bars at events and attending events to meet others or having events at the farm!

Q. What trends do you see in the craft cannabis market, and how do you plan to adapt?
A. In other more established markets like California, Colorado and BC’s own legacy market – solventless products for inputs for infused products like gummies, vapes, drinks, prerolls etc. I definitely see that as an evolution from distillate inputs that have barely begun to reach the market in Canada, so I see a big opportunity there. We are well positioned to adapt to this, with ample ‘food-grade’ supply of rosin that is produced when we make our premium jar grade. We have already sold some rosin to beverages for another brand and hope to see our own products in market one day.

Q. How do you see the future of the craft cannabis industry evolving in Canada?
A. I see the future of the craft cannabis industry evolving similarly to small wineries and craft breweries. BC is already well positioned to capitalize on this, and once the government releases their tight grip on regulations and taxes and fees, we will be able to afford things like developing a farm store and tasting room, allowing cannabis to participate in agri-tourism, contributing to our local economies. What needs to happen first however, is for all of the different associations and groups must release their egos and work together to provide priorities to the provincial government.
