Food Forest in the Laurentian Mountains: Wild Orchard Gardens

Food Forest in the Laurentian Mountains: Wild Orchard Gardens

The main work of a food forest is meant to be harvesting. That’s a pretty good sell for anyone who has tried to grow food successfully. There are so many models, most anciently the Garden of Eden, though you might avoid that apple variety.

I grew up in a small suburban garden in Southern California surrounded by fruit trees, a small pond and vegetable garden, a hen house, and rabbits. I planted the second forest garden in Georgia in an old pecan grove. By then, I could integrate permaculture practices into a garden. The third was an urban version in Montreal between buildings, and the fourth was in a UK allotment. Each of these varied settings supported a garden that embodied at least some of the design principles of a food forest.

Finally, in my sixth decade, I have landed on the south-facing hillside of an actual forest. And because we are on the Canadian shield, we have rocks. Often seen as a thorn in the side of garden cultivation, many of these are so large that they stack nicely into walls that support terracing. They collect and radiate heat into whatever grows before them, creating micro-climates throughout the garden. This terraced forest garden also integrates the principles of a food forest.

An Edible Forest Garden Mimics Nature

It was interesting to plant a forest garden surrounded by an actual forest. Even in our poor, rocky soil, the mycelium network insinuates itself into plantings, enriching what the plants have to work with. The nut trees are interplanted with existing maple and beech. They benefit immediately from this, as long as one has dealt with the light issues.

I planted nut trees as a substitute for grains. Like all trees, they bring up nutrients from deep within the soil. However, the nutrition carried in nuts is different from that of commercially grown grains, and they store well for a few years. Fruit trees and berry bushes also gather nutrients widely and hand them over in fruit that can be processed for the winter. And the great blessing is that none of this ever has to be replanted. Once they are established, it’s down to the mulching, pruning, and harvesting.

What’s For Dinner?

My garden features a collection of 50 walnut, hazelnut, and chestnut trees, 35 apple, pear, plum, peach and cherry trees, five kinds of berries and two grape varieties. I have also snaked in a collection of perennials to balance winter diets. Add asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, perennial chard, perennial herbs, and an array of wild native plants; throw a root crop harvest into the mix from the growing season, and one has a passable, pretty balanced winter diet. It’s not food entertainment, but it’s undoubtedly eating well.

Design Considerations for Your Food Forest

Forest gardens are mainly about design, planting, and then waiting for the trees and shrubs to mature and begin to yield groceries. Here is a checklist of considerations to make as you embark.

  • What do you want from your forest garden? Food, health, beauty, increasing biodiversity, comfort, community?
  • What scale are you working with? What are the mature sizes of the trees and plants you want to use?
  • What is the sun’s position in your space(s) throughout the day? This is critical. We had to take down some of the large dense evergreens to the south and west of the property to give the garden enough light for food production. Food doth not grow in the shade.
  • What are your constraints? Buildings are usually non-negotiable, but driveways, for instance, could be removed.
  • Plant forward from your edges. Moving from the north toward the south, plant highest to lowest so that as the trees mature, they are not blocking the sun for the lower canopy. This is where pruning and transplanting are essential as the garden changes and grows.
  • Develop plant guilds and annual crops between early plantings. A typical mistake is overplanting a site. While waiting for your trees to grow, you can always plant annual crops and add plants like comfrey and cover crops to build soil.
  • Integrate food for wildlife. Plant things to feed your woodland neighbors and keep them out of your more precious crops. For instance, when we took down the evergreens, we planted burr oaks on the garden’s outskirts and white clover in the open areas. This created food for nut eaters and grazers.
  • Build your soil! While you wait for your trees to mature, spend time improving the health of your soil. Find ways to amend it by developing composting practices, adding animal bedding, chipping prunings, etc., so you always have something to mulch with.

Strategies for Having Food Everywhere

As I mentioned, one of the design principles is to plant down from an “edge” toward the south (or even west). For instance, planting forward from the outside edge of a forest in descending plant sizes. What are your borders, and how can you best move forward from them? South-facing walls and fences present excellent edges. However, a west-facing wall could be a wonderful home for a grapevine, and growing vertically integrates a large vining plant in an otherwise unused space.

Benefits of Using the Edible Forest Garden Model

  • Localising food systems
  • Maximizing food yield by employing intensive growing practices
  • Building resilience through increasing biodiversity
  • Building self-supporting systems
  • Enjoying the intrinsic value of reciprocal relationships with nature.

Whether your food forest is a collection of plants surrounding a single tree or a more full-blown version, take time to plan it, but don’t hesitate to make it happen.

Older Psychedelics Users Reveal Fascinating Brain Function, Study Says

Older Psychedelics Users Reveal Fascinating Brain Function, Study Says

Scientific interest in psychedelics has increased greatly over the past few years as more and more trials determine that these substances possess the therapeutic potential to treat disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or anxiety.

Substances with the most promising results include LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and ketamine. Now, results from a recently conducted survey show that psychedelic drugs such as LSD, MDMA and psilocybin may help protect the brain from some features of aging.

The survey was carried out in the United States and involved 3,294 adults, all aged between 42 and 92 years of age. The results showed that individuals who admitted to using any psychedelic in the last year demonstrated more agreeable changes in their higher-order brain functions and fewer symptoms of depression.

In comparison to individuals who didn’t use psychedelics, those who used the substances scored higher on tests carried out over the phone that evaluated verbal fluency, inductive reasoning, processing speed, working memory, inhibitory control and attention switching. However, those who used psychedelics didn’t score higher on episodic memory, which retrieves and stores daily events. Episodic memory is often affected by dementia.

Despite this, the researchers — Kaeleigh Fearn from the University of South Florida and Utah State University’s Kallol Kumar Bhattacharyya — believe there’s a need to delve deeper. They note that while the number of clinical trials investigating the health benefits of these substances has grown, very few include older individuals.

In fact, psychedelics’ potential in restoring processes in the aging brain has hardly been explored. Fearn and Bhattacharyya argue that this is a huge oversight, particularly since old age has been linked to a decline in executive function.

The few studies that have included older patients have determined that psychedelic substances can enhance executive brain function and improve creativity, even when administered in small doses.

In their conclusion, the researchers recommend that state and federal governments decriminalize these substances to allow research to progress in a manner that ensured validity and reliability.

Other researchers agree that psychedelic-assisted treatments should be considered for use by older individuals but highlight the importance of conducting trials that test the effectiveness and safety of this approach. This is mainly because some psychedelics pose risks for individuals with personality disorders and can negatively affect the cardiovascular system.

It should be noted that these findings are observational and cannot be used to determine cause and effect. This is primarily because they rely on personal accounts of individuals who may have indulged on uncontrolled drug doses.

Additionally, this survey did not differentiate between the type of hallucinogens that were ingested. The researchers’ findings were reported in “Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine.”

As more entities such as Seelos Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: SEEL) also conduct their own clinical studies geared at commercializing psychedelic drugs, more data could become available about the different ways in which these substances impact the human body and mind.

Ice Water Extraction — Comprehensive Guide

Ice Water Extraction — Comprehensive Guide

According to statistics, it’s estimated that the global cannabis market size is valued at about 22.5 million, with it set to continue growing in the coming years. Unsurprisingly, with the way cannabis has exploded, it feels like every time you wrap your head around one CBD concept, a new one arises.

The same is true for cannabis extraction methods. Every year, there is a new and improved method surrounding CBD extraction from butane and CO2 to ice water extraction; there is a method for every budget and need. With so many methods available, it can feel like you can use CBD and THC with anything these days. Although this isn’t accurate, the theory holds up with ice water.

This method has become increasingly popular in recent years because it’s able to produce high-quality cannabis that is beautiful and pure. Yet, even though it is becoming widely adopted by weed connectors who want to try their hand at commercial CBD, not many people know what this method is.

In fact, most people don’t even know the benefits and equipment needed for ice water extractions. If you fall into this group, you might find our comprehensive guide interesting, as we discuss everything you need to know about ice water extractions.

Ice Water Extraction – A Brief History

Before delving into ice extraction and what it is, it is worth noting a brief history of this method and how it became a popular extraction process for cannabis growers.

Cold water or has been a popular go-to technique for herbalists for centuries. This is because it’s one of the best methods to draw out delicate flavors and medicinal properties from plants. Although it’s been around for centuries, cold water THC extraction is only recently becoming a modern application in industries like cannabis processing and pharmaceuticals.

In recent years, significant advancements in technology have allowed ice water extraction to be more widely used with precise control over variables like pressure and temperature. In fact, many labs use specialized equipment to enact the ice water extraction process, but this doesn’t mean you cannot complete it at home. With the right tools and knowledge, it’s possible to start extracting THC through ice water extraction.

What Is Ice Water Extraction? – The Method

First and foremost, this extraction method involves ice, water, and fermentation. Unlike other extraction methods, it’s unique because it doesn’t utilize chemicals to extract THC and CBD from a weed plant, resulting in a purer and more powerful batch.

Ice water extraction also offers less chance of contamination compared to and carbon dioxide extractions. This is because ice water removes the leaves and trichomes from a cannabis plant and is highly effective at preserving cannabinoids and terpenes.

How Does This Extraction Work?

Now that you know what ice water extraction is, we want to discuss how it works. Before understanding how this extraction method works, you must know more about trichomes. The science surrounding trichomes is long and complex, so we won’t bore you with too many details.

Trichomes are found on a cannabis plant and contain most , including CBD and THC. If you hold a weed bud and examine it closely, you can see trichomes. They are the sticky and sparkly bits that dust a bud. These trichomes are responsible for CBD’s calming effect and THC’s psychoactive effects.

So, how exactly does it work? First, ice water extraction is effective because the trichomes on a cannabis plant are significantly denser than water. When this extraction method is used, the cold water prevents trichomes from dissolving and instead allows them to float. Using ice water makes it easier to separate pure cannabinoids from plant material and water.

Essentially, ice water extraction is a method whereby cannabis is immersed in freezing water and stirred (or agitated) gently to dislodge the hairs from the plant. When the trichomes fall off the cannabis plant, they pass through various screens, filters, mesh bags, or bubble bags. Typically, this process allows growers to garner a product with 50% to 70% THC levels. [1]

Yet, why is ice water used instead of hot water? Simple. Hot water can cause various cannabinoids to activate or, in worst-case scenarios, dissolve. As you can see, this method is simple but effective, which is why it’s becoming increasingly popular.

What Tools Are Needed For Ice Water Extraction?

Although this extraction method is simple, you need specialized equipment to use this production method on a commercialized scale. CBD production dreams can be realized with ice water extraction, as solventless cannabis concentrates are in high demand.

So, if you want to set up an ice water extraction lab, you’ll need the following equipment items:

The Basic Equipment Needed

  • Grinders: Those who want to increase the surface area exposure to the ice water should use grinders to grind the cannabis plant materials into smaller portions. By grinding cannabis into smaller portions, the extraction process is optimized and far more effective since the cannabis is exposed to more cold water.
  • Scales: Accurate measuring instruments like scales are crucial for ensuring consistent extraction results. Although kitchenware scales will get the job done, using a professional lab-grade scale will be more reliable for producing higher yields and better product outcomes.
  • Large paddles or mixing spoons: With the cold method, you need to agitate the mixture gently. The best way to do this is to use large wooden paddles or mixing spoons. If wooden spoons cannot be obtained, the next best thing is silicone spoons.
  • Filter bags: These might not sound like an important equipment item, but filter bags are crucial to the ice-water extraction process. You will need multiple large filter bags to catch the plant material and fine filters to catch the trichomes you need for your products. Additionally, using numerous filter bags with differing mesh sizes will help you separate higher-grade material to ensure you produce more potent effects.
  • Stainless steel buckets: Cultivators need stainless steel buckets to hold water, cannabis, and ice. Although other types of buckets and containers can be used, stainless steel is far easier to clean, more durable, and less likely to carry contaminants.

The Water and Ice Preparation Tools Needed

  • Ice packs or an ice maker: Those who use the ice water extraction method often need to ensure they have a reliable source of ice weather through ice packs or an ice maker. If ice is not in ready supply, there is a risk that the temperature will drop, and this could interfere with the extraction process.
  • Water and ice (purification system): To utilize the ice-water extraction method, you will need large quantities of ice and water. Yet, you need to be careful of the water you use so as not to carry over any contaminants to the trichomes you’re collecting. Most commercial laboratories invest in water purification equipment to ensure a reliable clean, potable water source.

Drying Equipment Needed

  • Drying racks or screens: After using the ice water extraction method, you’ll need to use drying racks or screens to allow the extracted materials to dry properly before processing them.
  • Freeze-drying equipment: To produce an end product, you will need freeze-drying equipment. Even though you can air dry your extractions, it’s better to freeze dry if you’re extracting commercially. This is because using freeze-drying equipment will ensure you preserve more terpenes (volatile compounds that give cannabis flavor and aroma).

Additional Equipment You Might Need

  • pH Meter: Monitoring the pH level of the water during extraction can help optimize the extraction process. A pH meter is essential for this purpose.
  • Thermometer: A thermometer is needed to maintain the optimal temperature during extraction. You do not want your water to get too warm, as this can compromise the batch you are extracting.
  • Timer: Tracking the extraction time is crucial for achieving consistent results. A timer can help you accurately monitor the ice-water extraction process’s duration.
  • Microscope: A microscope can be handy for checking the quality of the trichomes and determining the best time to stop the extraction process.
  • Sinks and benches: You will need to invest in heavy-duty sinks and benches as they will take the biggest beating throughout their working lives. This equipment is crucial for this extraction method because it helps extract trichomes properly while protecting against corrosion.

Ultimately, it’s not possible to disregard the importance of good-quality equipment for ice water extractions. Suppose you want to commercially produce products containing pure CBD and THC extracts that transfer to your final product. In that case, you need premium-quality equipment—especially if you’re in the business for the long haul.

How To Perform Ice Water Extraction Yourself

Ice water extraction can be as simple or as complex as one needs it to be. If the end result is personal consumption, this process can often be performed at home with a few basic tools.

However, if the aim of THC water extraction is to use the products to sell on a commercial basis, the process is best done in a laboratory setting with controlled conditions. With that said, here is how to perform ice water extraction yourself at home:

  1. Grind your cannabis: The first step involves grinding your cannabis into a refined form so that it can be extracted more effectively with the ice water solution.
  2. Mix your cannabis with warm water: After you have a roughly ground form of the cannabis you want to use for THC cold extraction, you need to mix it with warm water – not hot water. This will help loosen up the trichomes and speed the process up when you add them to the ice water bath for extraction.
  3. Rapidly cool the mixture: You’ll want to rapidly cool the mixture by putting it into an ice bath. You should leave it to sit and cool for about a half hour as this will allow the hairs to separate from the rest of the cannabis materials.
  4. Pour the mixture through a filter: Once the hairs have separated, you can pour the mixture through a filter, mesh, or bubble bag. This will collect the filtered liquid while catching all the residue you don’t need.
  5. Storage: Once you have filtered the trichomes, you’ll need to store the solution until you are ready to use it. Alternatively, you can use drying racks to dry the material and then store it.

This is a very rudimentary way of using the ice-water hash extraction process, but it should work for small batches.

What Are The Benefits Of This Extraction Method?

As with every extraction method, ice water extraction has many benefits. Below are the most important benefits you need to note if you want to dip your toes into this extraction pool.

  • Aroma and Flavor: The way trichomes are extracted can significantly affect the aroma and flavor of THC and CBD because they are delicate. The ice water extraction method is not damaging and is an easy process. Due to this, this method captures incredibly aromatic and flavorful hash that shows an increase in terpene retention;
  • Purity and Potency: compared to every other extraction method, ice water extraction gives producers the best potency and purity. However, to ensure these benefits, you need the appropriate equipment to prevent contamination. In addition, the more potent and pure an extraction, the better the products;
  • Yields: It’s been proven that dry sifting isn’t as effective as ice water extraction, which is why the latter offers better yields. Ultimately, unlike other methods, ice water extraction is less wasteful because it better collects trichomes.

Are There Any Environmental Considerations Surrounding Ice Water Extraction?

Ice water extraction is not only beneficial for producing high-quality cannabis extracts but also for its environmental friendliness. Have a look below as we delve into how this method stands out in terms of sustainability and eco-friendliness compared to other extraction methods popularly employed.

  • Low carbon footprint: Unlike , which requires large amounts of energy, ice water extraction uses ice and water, which are readily available and don’t contribute to a high carbon footprint.
  • Reduced waste: Ice water extraction is known for producing less waste compared to other methods. The plant material left after extraction can be composted, reducing the overall waste generated in the extraction process.

These are only two of the environmental aspects making the ice water extraction method preferable to other more harmful extraction methods used by cannabis growers and pharmaceutical companies.

What Are A Few Tips To Ensure Successful Ice Water Extraction?

Although ice water extraction is a fairly simple process that can be completed with basic or advanced tools (as discussed above), there are a few tips you can keep in mind to ensure the process runs smoothly:

  • Quality of cannabis: For the best results when using the ice-water extraction method, growers need to start the process with high-quality cannabis flowers or buds. The starting material’s quality significantly impacts the final extract’s quality.
  • Optimal water and ice ratio: Finding the right balance between water and ice is crucial for effective extraction. Too much ice may slow down the extraction process, while too little may not be effective. This might take some time and trial and error, but determining the optimal water and ice ratio will save time and money in the long run and lead to better, more high-quality yields.
  • Agitation techniques: Agitating your mixture too much or too little can negatively affect your yield. That’s why the proper agitation of the mixture is essential to ensure that trichomes are effectively separated from the plant material. It’s best to err on the side of caution and use gentle stirring or shaking motions to help improve the extraction efficiency.
  • Filtration: Although it may be tempting to cut costs, it’s important to use quality mesh bags or bubble bags with varying mesh sizes to filter out the cannabis plant material and collect trichomes efficiently. Growers also might want to consider multiple rounds of filtration. It’s been proven that multiple rounds of filtration can help achieve higher purity.

Wrap-Up On Ice Water Extraction

This extraction method is one of the best in the industry, especially for those who want to commercially produce CBD or THC products. This method is simple but effective and usually offers the best quality, pure, trichome results

There Is No such Thing as Legitimate or Moral Government, Rule, or Authority, and There Has Never Been

There Is No such Thing as Legitimate or Moral Government, Rule, or Authority, and There Has Never Been

There Is No such Thing as Legitimate or Moral

Government, Rule, or Authority,

and There Has Never Been

“The way people speak of those in power, calling their commands “laws,” referring to disobedience to them as a “crime,” and so on, implies the right of “government” to rule, and a corresponding obligation on the part of its subjects to obey. Without the right to “rule,” (“authority”) there is no need to call the entity “government,” and all the politicians and their mercenaries become utterly indistinguishable from a giant organized crime syndicate, their “laws” no more valid than the threats of muggers and carjackers.”

~ Larken Rose, “The Most Dangerous Superstition”

All rule and any assumed ‘authority’ of one man or any group of men over another is completely evil, immoral and illegitimate. It matters not whether there is some pretense of “representation” by any group claiming to be the arbiters of the people, for each and every individual is sovereign for and unto himself alone. No one has any right to act or demand compliance on behalf of another, and no one has any right to delegate any power to afford one the right to rule another, period. Unless a voluntarily signed, personal, and individual contract is accepted by distinct and willing participants, where that contract can be found null and void immediately upon any failure to act in the manner prescribed, there is no right of one to act on the behalf of another concerning rule. This does not mean that any worthless piece of political garbage, such as any “constitution,” or any arbitrary “laws” or mandates, can ever be held as “legal;” a term immorally used by the State for the sole purpose of tyranny, in order that rule and control over other individuals can falsely be seen as justifiable. The essence of natural law, real justice, and freedom are never compatible with rule and authority.

Therefore, all government is not only criminal, it is pure evil. The entire basis of government is to lord over others by the use of violent force. Any assumption of a right to do so is ludicrous on its face, but sold to the seemingly ignorant and pathetic masses as supported by the State’s version of the insane and bastardized ‘definition’ of “law.” This bogus modern definition, one hammered into the populace from birth, as supplied by Websters, is this ridiculous rendition:

“Law is a rule of civil conduct prescribed by the supreme power of the State, commanding what its subjects are to do, and prohibiting what they are to forebear.”

This so-called definition is the exact opposite of natural law, and is totally devoid of any aspect or mention of justice. In addition, no state is ‘supreme,’ nor does it possess any justifiable ‘supreme’ power to “command its subjects” (slaves) as to what they may do or not do outside of natural law. The very idea that some group of common criminal humans called government, are ‘supreme’ rulers with power over all others, is the antithesis of freedom of the individual, and therefore it should never be allowed to exist in any form.

“Law” in this country is absolutely nothing more than arbitrary restrictions, regulations, and enforcement of abhorrent State decrees through the act of extreme violence and force. It is the single most heinous crime against mankind possible. There should never be any talk or action in support of any State, there should be no “going back to the constitution,”  there should be no saving of the ‘republic,’ as there should be no such thing as ‘nationalism.’ There should never be any notion of “getting the country back,” or “getting back to the constitution,” there should only be calls to abolish this nonsense called rule and ‘authority’ by negating even the idea of any evil government.

As I continue to declare as I did some time ago, and will do so again: “No one, no statisticians, and not even this government itself, has any clue as to how many federal laws exist. No one knows how many rules, restrictions, and regulations there are, and it is impossible to find an answer to this question. The Federal Register alone, the daily repository of all proposed and final federal rules and regulations, has well over 85,000 pages. The Code of Federal Regulations through 2019, has 186,000 pages, and the Federal Register Pages for the past decade eclipsed 800,000 pages. This alone is unimaginable. But of course, there are more. There is a law for every aspect of our lives in this country, and there are a completely separate set of international laws, State laws, county laws, city laws, and licensing laws for every activity or thought. This is total insanity, and why every single ‘citizen’ can be deemed a criminal at any given moment. Even as far back as in the times of Roman historian Tacitus, he stated that, “The more corrupt the State, the more numerous the laws.” The U.S. has more laws by far than any other nation on earth in history, and therefore is the most corrupt and criminal of all time.”

Government in this country is nothing but a religion based on politics. ‘God’ cannot be seen, touched, questioned, or be physically experienced, but the ‘god’ of government can be seen and exists in reality, and so is accepted more readily. The Government is the church of the people, the horrendous constitution is the bible, and the president is the pastor of his obedient flock of fools. Many moronic herd members are convinced that this government was set up by ‘God,’ and that the detestable constitution came about due to ‘divine intervention.’ This kind of idiotic attitude is the epitome of insanity, as a vehement ruling class that takes total control over its subjects by force is simply a criminal enterprise surviving by aggression, lies, theft, terror, and violence. Since most all accept the notion that rule and authority are moral, they are in fact the enemy of freedom and justice, and complicit in all the injustice, theft, control, and slaughter of innocents that is the mainstay of government and all authority.

Humanity will not be saved by any manner of rule, authority, or government, but it will be destroyed if government, any government, prevails. This does not mean that any violent takeover, or total abolishment is necessary, because the State is nothing but a fraud, and can be eliminated simply by ignoring its fake claim to authority, and total negation of any of its arbitrary ‘laws,’  mandates, and decrees.

The next time you think of government as special and divine, and worthy of wielding all power over you, just look around at all the people you see every day, and then look in the mirror. Those you worship are the very same as all you see; they have just fooled you into believing that they are special, and deserve the right to be your lord and master. Always remember that in this circumstance, you will always be the slave. You are your own worst enemy, and by condoning any and all aggression and oppression, and supporting the entity called ‘country’ and State, you are guilty of all the crimes of the government that you accept without question.

“These so-called governments are in reality only great bands of robbers and murderers, organized, disciplined, and constantly on the alert.”

~ Lysander Spooner

CanadaBis continues trend of profitability with focus on pre-rolls and extracts

CanadaBis continues trend of profitability with focus on pre-rolls and extracts

CanadaBis Capital Inc, the parent company of cannabis brands like Stigma Grow, reported its third quarter fiscal 2024 results, with $2.2 million in gross profits and 109,824 in net and comprehensive income.

The majority of the Calgary-based cannabis company’s profits was from the sale of extracts, with $170,946 in gross profits from dried flower sales and just under $2 million in extracts sales, for the three months ended April 30, 2024. This is an increase in gross profits from cannabis flower sales from the same quarter in 2023 ($59,579) and a decrease in gross profits from extracts sales ($2.6 million).

The Company reported a 44% decrease in its sales of extract products in the Provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. However, it has seen continued growth in the sale of its flavoured, infused pre-rolls and its Electric Dartz pre-rolls. CanadaBis also lists its butane hydrocarbon (BHO) extraction process as a competitive advantage in the industry.

The company lists $763,447 in excise duty from its sales of flower (~48% of $1.6 million gross sales) and almost $2.4 million in excise duty for extracts sales (from $5.5 million gross sales), both representing around 40-50% excise rates, for Q3 2024.

The Company currently owns a 66,000-square-foot facility in Alberta, with around 44,000 square feet of the building developed and equipped to grow 225 kg of cannabis per year. In the most recent quarter, they released 17 new SKUs into the Canadian market and have been attempting to position themselves as the leader in infused pre-rolls and “super slim” pre-rolls, as well as expand the Dab Bods brand across Canada.

The company’s overall gross revenues were up in Q3 2024 compared to Q2 2024, but higher excise taxes meant lower net revenue. This was somewhat offset by a lower cost of sales, which led to net income remaining relatively stable from Q2 to Q3.

“CanadaBis Capital’s performance in Q3 2024 was robust, driven by our strategic investments and continuous efforts to optimize our operational efficiencies,” said Travis Mcintyre, Chief Executive Officer of CanadaBis Capital. “We are focused on enhancing shareholder value through prudent financial management and forward-thinking strategies in the evolving cannabis market.”

Representatives of the prohibitionist organization Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) have expressed their disapproval of the government’s plan to categorize cannabis as a Schedule 3 substance. They criticized the move as politically driven and not based on scientific evidence. The group is now exploring all legal avenues to challenge this change and is rallying its supporters to oppose it.

Kevin Sabet, SAM president and CEO, spoke during an online meeting, expressing strong disapproval of the federal officials behind the rescheduling proposal. He argued that the recommendation seemed outdated and inappropriate for 2024. Sabet emphasized that the process is far from over and that a lot of actions can be taken against the proposed change.

The organization’s executive vice president, Luke Niforatos, encouraged opponents of the reform to contact policymakers and voice their concerns. He suggested that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) had already indicated ways for advocates to push back against the recommendation.

SAM has been disseminating allegations that DEA officials might be against the proposed adjustment ever since the government unveiled its rescheduling proposal in April. Sabet mentioned hearing that DEA director Anne Milgram had not signed off on the proposal, suggesting internal disagreement. Instead, U.S. attorney general Merrick Garland signed the proposed rule, raising further questions during a congressional hearing, where Milgram declined to comment on the matter.

During the SAM event, Sabet acknowledged that substances with proven medical use shouldn’t be in Schedule 1, the most restrictive category of the CSA. However, he criticized the review process by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which concluded cannabis has proven medical uses. He argued that the process seemed to approve substances based on popularity rather than scientific merit.

Many of the ramifications of officially classifying marijuana as Schedule 3 are still unknown, according to Sabet. One potential change is that state-licensed cannabis businesses could claim tax deductions, which might lead to the industry’s expansion. He and other panelists warned that this could result in increased marijuana use, more access for teenagers and greater risks on the roads. Sabet also downplayed the idea that rescheduling would significantly ease restrictions on marijuana research.

Looking ahead, SAM hopes the DEA might reject the recommendation or consider moving cannabis to Schedule 2. Sabet referenced international law interpretations that seem to require keeping marijuana in Schedule 1 or 2. In 2016, the DEA denied an earlier petition to reschedule cannabis, citing international treaty obligations.

Sabet expressed doubt that rescheduling would prompt the FDA to interfere with state-licensed marijuana markets. However, Niforatos urged followers to press the federal government to utilize postponement as justification for taking action against legally operating states.

The recommendation to reschedule cannabis was officially proposed last month, initiating a public comment period expected to generate diverse responses. Cannabis reform advocates plan to leverage this opportunity, with some supporting reclassification and others pushing for complete descheduling. SAM and other prohibitionists, meanwhile, are expected to continue opposing the policy change via lobbying and potential litigation.

Marijuana companies such as Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (CSE: CURA) (OTCQX: CURLF) may have expected this pushback against the rescheduling of cannabis at the federal level, and they will be following the process as it unfolds now that the authorities have opened a comment period regarding the proposed policy change.

Australia’s cannabis regulator has issued more than $600,000 in fines

Australia’s cannabis regulator has issued more than $600,000 in fines

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued 35 infringement notices totalling six cannabis businesses and two individuals for the alleged unlawful advertising of medicinal cannabis on their websites and social media platforms.

The businesses include licensed medicinal cannabis manufacturers and importers, a health clinic, and a retailer. The TGA alleges that each business unlawfully promoted the use and supply of prescription-only medicinal cannabis.

The total of the fines is AUD$627,252 or (CAD$571,355). The six infringement notices were issued to Botanic Wellness Limited (13 notices for a total of $244,140), Grandiosa Imports Pty Ltd (7 and $131,460), Releaf Group Limited (7 and $131,460), NectarTek Australia Pty Ltd (4 and $75,120), Turkken Pty Ltd and a WA-based individual (2 and $22,536), Cymra Life Sciences Ltd (1 $18,780), and a NSW-based individual (sole-trader) (1 and $3,756).

These businesses also allegedly endorsed the use of medicinal cannabis for treating serious diseases, conditions and disorders, such as cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain. These references are considered restricted or prohibited representations under Australis regulations and are not allowed in advertising for therapeutic goods unless they receive prior approval or permission from the TGA.

In some instances, the advertisements also allegedly included violations such as indirect references to medicinal cannabis, such as ‘plant medicine’, implied that medicinal cannabis had been approved or recommended by the TGA, and promoted their own prescription-only medicinal cannabis products. Cannabis products for medical purposes are unapproved medicines in Australia and are not entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Advertising prescription-only medicines, like cannabis, for medical purposes directly to consumers is prohibited in Australia. The unlawful advertising of prescription-only medicines, which includes medicinal cannabis, is a breach of the country’s Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, and penalties can include fines or even civil or criminal court action.

The TGA has initiated two civil penalties and issued 165 infringement notices in the past two years, for a total of $2.3 million in penalties to organizations and individuals for the alleged unlawful advertising of medicinal cannabis.

In May, the TGA announced it had issued 11 infringement notices, totalling $171,972, to Better Leaf Pty Ltd. and an individual for the alleged unlawful advertising of medicinal cannabis on its website and social media platforms. In the same month, a National Rugby League club agreed to remove branding from medical cannabis company Alternaleaf from its jerseys and on signages displayed at stadiums during its games.

In April, the TGA began proceedings against Montu Group Pty Ltd., its subsidiary Alternaleaf Pty Ltd., and their common director, Mr. Christopher Strauch, for alleged unlawful advertising of medicinal cannabis on websites and social media.

The regulators allege that Montu and Alternaleaf unlawfully advertised medicinal cannabis using terms including ‘medical cannabis’ and ‘plant medicine’ to promote the Alternaleaf online clinic. Montu is further alleged to have operated a website during Medicinal Cannabis Awareness Week 2023 which advertised medicinal cannabis to the public, also against the TGA’s marketing rules.

The agency also recently shared testing info conducted on 21 medicinal cannabis products sold in Australia for the presence of Delta-8-THC. Although no Delta-8 was detected, one product (Cannatrek) was found to be outside of the allowable 90.0-110.0% of label claim for THC.

Manitoba announces new cannabis product freshness criteria

Manitoba announces new cannabis product freshness criteria

Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) is putting new rules in place to ensure cannabis sold in the province is fresher.

The provincial agency sent a notice to producers on June 26 informing them of new “product freshness criteria” coming into effect July 15 for cannabis flower, edibles, some extracts, and topicals.

As of that date, all cannabis flower, including infused flower products sold into the Manitoba market must arrive at the retailer no later than nine months from the packaging date.

All edible cannabis products with no “best before” date must also arrive at the retailer no later than nine months from the packaging date. Those edibles with a “best before” date must arrive at the Retailer 60 calendar days or more prior to the Best Before date.

Cannabis topicals must also arrive at the Retailer no later than nine months from the packaging date, but cannabis extracts other than infused flower products will have no packaging date limitations.

Cannabis retailers in Manitoba will also be allowed to refuse delivery or return products that do not follow these new freshness rules. A credit will be issued to the retailer in such cases, at the supplier’s expense. Suppliers can choose to issue a credit in the case of a customer return.

The move from Manitoba comes as other provinces seek to manage a growing inventory of older products. Alberta’s AGLC announced it would be delisting more than 500 slow-moving SKUs in May. BC recently announced similar changes to its policies for accepting new products and storing existing products as the industry closes in on six years of operation.

Unlike most other provinces, Manitoba does not operate its own distribution centre for cannabis sold in its territory, but instead allows producers to ship directly to retailers. They have also recently begun licensing Cannabis Distributor Licenses to third parties offering distribution services. As of June 20, they have licensed four of these businesses.

Manitoba currently has 206 private retail cannabis stores, 124 of which are in Winnipeg.

Contempo Specialty Packaging Pioneers New Compostable Flower Pod System for Cannabis

Published: June 27, 2024

Contempo Specialty Packaging, an innovative custom packaging company, is excited to introduce a new sustainable packaging solution for the cannabis industry: the compostable flower pod cannabis packaging system. This inventive product boasts the same level of quality and customization that Contempo’s customers have come to expect over the past 45 years.

This pioneering compostable flower pod system comprises two parts:

  1. An all-metal and highly recyclable, resealable, child-resistant tin
  2. A one-time child-resistant sealed pod made from a DIN CERTCO- and BPI-certified home and industrially compostable biobased resin that fits securely within the tin

Dispensary customers receive both the reusable metal tin and home-compostable bioresin pod on their first purchase. On subsequent purchases, they receive only the pod. The groundbreaking system is home-compostable, sustainable by every metric, and beautifully designed.

“We wanted to create the most sustainable cannabis packaging option possible,” said Contempo Specialty Packaging CEO Michael Markarian. “The idea of reusable packaging is great, but the cost of shipping products to sterilization facilities has environmental impacts, not to mention the water consumption in sterilization. This pod system reduces the amount of waste and other environmental impacts as well.”

Contempo is a second-generation family-owned company that has been serving customers in the cannabis industry and beyond since 1979. Over its 45-year history, the Company has consistently pushed the boundaries with aesthetically pleasing, innovative, and sustainable packaging solutions for every industry. The compostable flower pod system is the latest entry in the Company’s cutting-edge product line.
