The Greatest Threat to the Establishment—Reason
Independent Reasoning is the Extraordinary Feature of an Individual
You are a real superhero. You are equipped with a superpower—one that allows you to pierce through illusions, unravel mysteries, and shape your destiny. That superpower is your mental Swiss army knife. We’re talking about reason. It’s not merely the ability to solve sudoku puzzles or math problems, but the compass that points toward truth. It’s the difference between saying “I feel like unicorns exist” and saying “Let’s examine the fossil record and genetics to determine the likelihood of unicorn existence.” Reason isn’t just a tool; it’s the very essence of our intellectual existence. Buckle up, because we’re about to explore how reason fuels libertarian ideals and transforms everyday lives.
The Ability to Understand the World
In the Cambridge Dictionary, reason is defined as “the ability of a healthy mind to think and make judgments, especially based on practical facts.” Reason is the ability to untangle complex problems and investigate them from their very fundamentals. When faced with a decision, reason helps us weigh evidence, consider consequences, and choose wisely. While emotions are based on gut feelings, reason follows logic. Reason allows us to categorize, abstract, generalize, and create mental frameworks. Libertarian principles such as freedom, property, and rights are concepts built with reason.
Reason links cause and effect. It’s recognizing that eating junk food and being sedentary leads to poor health as well as a bad state of well-being. But it goes beyond nutrition—it’s understanding that economic policies have ripple effects, that personal choices impact society, and that ideas shape civilizations. Reason connects the dots across time and space.
An Ancient and Contemporary Foundation
Although the Stoics did not often speak explicitly about it, a basic Stoic principle is relying on reason instead of emotions. Stoic epistemology teaches that we can attain knowledge only by using reason. Facts exist independently of our wishes. Using logic and understanding we can comprehend the world. Marcus Aurelius characterizes reason as helping him face an uncertain future: “Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”
Ayn Rand identifies reason as the only fundamental force propelling humankind forward. She promotes embracing it as the principle to base your morals upon and facing logical facts everywhere in life, in public as well as in private, independent of the conclusions being delightful or meager. Not using your brain to think clearly is escaping responsibility. It is the cause of evil. Through her consistent reasoning, she arrives at the conclusion that there is only one social system consistent with these principles: one that fully respects individual rights in the form of laissez-faire capitalism. Further, in this system selfish interests of all individuals align automatically.
A Reasoning Society
“You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” There are undeniable facts that cannot be changed by wishful thinking. Our actions will have consequences. Reason forces us to face facts, even when they’re as bitter as burnt coffee. If we do not use reason to reflect on our behavior, the consequences of our actions will hit us painfully later—they can only be deferred, not bypassed. A society that doesn’t use reason and disregards fundamental principles will have to live with the consequences.
Consistent reasoning inevitably leads to becoming advocates of a laissez-faire free-market system, as this is the most efficient way to achieve any goal and provides maximal freedom to everybody. One cannot argue for an authoritarian, communist system when one reasons consistently—from an economic perspective, there is no way to produce what humans demand efficiently, as can be seen clearly in countless historic trials under every circumstance imaginable. Reasoning further tells you that “evil capitalists” can only earn if they can convince you to spend your hard-earned money on their offerings voluntarily. The only alternative for them is to cooperate with the state in forcing you to spend your money on their products. Hence, a society reasoning consistently ends up in a system of economic and social collaboration built on free-market principles.
More drastically, Murray Rothbard delineates that “The greatest danger to the State is independent intellectual criticism.” Lysander Spooner expands: “[I]f they do [support the government], this majority is composed, in large part, of the most ignorant, superstitious, timid, dependent, servile, and corrupt portions of the people: of those who have been over-awed by the power, intelligence, wealth, and arrogance…” In fact, Rothbard describes it as essential for the state to stop citizens from reasoning independently by having intellectuals promote an ideology of the necessity of the state. Further, it is crucial for governments to ridicule critical thoughts as conspiracy theories because really investigating an issue will lead to questioning the official the motives of involved parties.
Utilizing Reason
Reason helps you prioritize and make decisions. You avoid emotional bias and weigh pros and cons. Hence, you skip the $200 sneakers; invest in knowledge or experiences and prioritize delayed gratification. Use reason to navigate your relationships—analyze patterns. If “friends” are draining your energy, hit the eject button.
Instead of just laughing about explanations that seem ludicrous, engage your inner detective, and consider different arguments as well as grotesque-seeming explanations. By making an effort and searching for the evidence, you will end up being convinced of arguments you thought are ridiculous, such as a laissez-faire free-market system being hugely beneficial to everybody and government not being necessary—you might end up as a sovereign individual. Reasoning means questioning assumptions, evaluating evidence, and avoiding logical fallacies. Critical thinking will lead you to sound conclusions.
Reason’s Triumph
Reason isn’t just a tool; it’s our lifeline. Reasoning means engaging your brain cells and thinking critically to find objective truth. It dismantles dogmas, fuels progress, and lights the path to a freer, richer existence. If societies reasoned more clearly, the world would be a freer place, and regularly-failing experiments, such as communism, would be laughed at. Utilize reason for your personal life by really thinking problems through. So, dear reader, embrace reason. As Ayn Rand said, “wishing won’t make it so.” Reason will. In your opinion, where should people reason more?
Think for yourself and question everything, my fellow liberty people!

The anticipated reclassification of cannabis by the federal government to a less-dangerous category may not have an immediate effect on states where cannabis use for either recreational or medical purposes is still illegal. Nonetheless, cannabis legalization proponents see the federal shift as potentially influencing state policymakers who have been hesitant about endorsing cannabis.
Matthew Schweich, head of the Marijuana Policy Project, a prolegalization advocacy group, often encounters state legislators who express potential support but are reluctant due to federal illegality. While reclassification wouldn’t legalize cannabis outright, Schweich believes it could alleviate some concerns among state legislators, potentially making them more inclined to support legalization efforts.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s proposal aims to move marijuana from Schedule I to III of the Controlled Substances Act. This shift would entail less-stringent regulation, though the process may not conclude until after the upcoming presidential election. In the interim, the proposed change could provide new arguments for proponents of ballot initiatives seeking cannabis legalization. Florida is set to vote on a constitutional change for recreational marijuana in November 2024. Similar votes are anticipated in South Dakota and Nebraska, where efforts are underway to legalize recreational cannabis and permit private companies to cultivate and distribute it.
Moreover, former police officer Mark Friese, now a criminal defense lawyer in North Dakota, is in favor of a program to legalize cannabis in the state. In his opinion, those efforts may greatly benefit from the federal reclassification.
However, not everyone is convinced of the impact of reclassification. Jackee Winters, leading a group in Idaho advocating for medical cannabis legalization, finds it challenging to gather support due to fear of legal repercussions.
The potential federal change may have a limited effect in states where marijuana is already legal for recreational or medical use. Still, advocates hope it could sway opinions in states with more restrictive laws or outright bans on cannabis.
In Georgia, although low-THC marijuana products have been allowed since 2015 for specific medical conditions, purchasing them legally only became possible last year. A federal reclassification could ease restrictions, allowing pharmacists to handle cannabis products much as they do any other prescription medication.
Meanwhile, in states such as Tennessee where elected officials are hesitant to support marijuana legislation, a federal reclassification could spark conversations. However, some, such as Senate Speaker Randy McNally, remain cautious, noting that many issues would persist even if marijuana were downgraded to Schedule III.
Kansas faced a similar scenario where attempts to legalize medical cannabis met strong opposition, particularly from law enforcement officials concerned about potential ramifications.
In Texas, limited access to low-THC marijuana products is allowed by law, but efforts to expand access have faced criticism. Similarly, in Wyoming, past efforts to decriminalize cannabis or legalize medical use have not gained traction.
Despite these challenges, there’s optimism among advocates that federal reclassification could ease resistance and encourage more legislators to seriously consider legalization. Apollo Pazell, who has been involved in previous legalization efforts, believes that resistance will diminish over time.
Existing cannabis companies such as SNDL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNDL) will probably wait for the reclassification process to be completed so that they can assess how they can realign their strategic direction in light of the evolving landscape at the federal level.

Second generation cannabis grower Kyra Horvath learned to cultivate after her mother-in-law. She quickly took to the craft and in 2020, Horvath and her husband/business partner Laine Keyes began the build of their 10,000 sq ft facility in Oliver, B.C.
While their focus is on the domestic market, specifically British Columbia and Ontario, Pineapple Buds finds differentiation in their taste and preferences for the sensory appeal of their product – recognizing a distinctly millennial twist to their practices and consumer demographic.
GO: What practices did take away from your mother-in-law?
KH: Every single time I bring people into the facility and train them, the first thing that comes to mind is everything that Laine’s mom taught me. When we first started out, we were in soil, and one of the funniest things is his mom is really into feng shui. When I went in to water, she told me I couldn’t water in a zig zag, it had to be a figure eight to have the right feng shui for the plants. That’s one of my best memories and it’s always in the back of my mind: how would she do this, and how do I incorporate the methods of others? Now being able to use science and all these different resources at our fingertips that weren’t available before – I keep that in mind.
GO: What growing methods have you adapted using modern research?
KH: One of the first facilities that Laine co-founded was on his farm growing cannabis with fish. That’s naturally how we went from soil to what would be considered deep water culture, just without the fish component. One of the reasons we decided to stay with hydro is because the growth rates have always been really strong for us; the plant vigor. Transplanting out of soil is time consuming. So instead, the plants go in, they stay, they grow for their entire lifetime, then they get cut down with only the necessary maintenance required.
GO: What provinces are you in and how many SKUs do you have?
KH: We are in B.C. and we sell through direct delivery and central, and then Ontario too. In B.C., we have eight SKUs and in Ontario we have two general listings, and we were just approved for two more. In B.C. we have four cultivars: Candy Kush (our most recent), Pineapple Haze, Purple Gushers (2023 Karma Cup winner), and Volcanic Haze – a blend of Haze and Gushers.

GO: Are you exporting product?
KH: We want to support our Canadian retailers who have been put through the wringer just as much as LPs have. Retailers have also had a really tough time navigating making a business that has consistent revenue coming in with everybody getting a piece of the pie. So, if we can do our part in not only helping LPs but also being there for retailers and making sure there’s good quality product on the shelves that they can stand behind and sell, that’s really where our focus is. We want to maintain that good relationship with B.C. and make sure that they’re well fed, while also continuing to add on provinces as we grow.
GO: How has yours and Laine’s identity informed your cannabis careers?
KH: When we immersed ourselves in the legal market, we thought why would people want to have our product over somebody else’s? Obviously craft is a huge part of that, but one of the reflections that both Laine and I had is our age. We put almost a millennial twist on production – how we grow is for the qualities that we would like to consume. We like the flavours; we love the beautiful colours: the purple, the reds, the pinks. Sometimes when we bring in contractors, there is the assumption that because I’m young I don’t know what I’m doing. Back in the day you would leave a lot more leaf and under leaf foliage, and now we use lollipopping, which is a change in pruning technique, and that’s something I would associate with the generational change.
Kyra Horvath is the COO and master grower at Pineapple Buds, located on the Osoyoos Indian Band in Oliver, B.C.

As the international landscape for cannabis broadens both in geography and product diversity, acronyms such as GACP, EU-GMP, and IMC-GAP, find their way into regular conversation. Companies that would have once been hyper-focused on the domestic market are now considering export opportunities, and with that comes international regulation.
Finding the right credentials to ensure products are qualified to go where they are intended can be a daunting and confusing task, as is even deciding to get certified.
When to get certified
StratCann spoke with Deepak Anand, who has been active in the global cannabis marketplace for years. Anand is currently the Principal of ASDA Consultancy Services and took the time to examine the hows and whys of certifying a cannabis company.
He began by pointing out a simple fact that may not be obvious to companies hungry for expansion. “International sales and distribution is not for everyone. That’s often where a lot of confusion lies,” he said.
Anand went on to add that it really depends on the business model. If the model is a hyper-focused product for the Canadian recreational market, then international sales credentials are not necessary. “Often some of these certifications require quite a bit of compliance, so in some cases it might not make sense to have [them].”
Having said that, a valid reason to obtain EU-GMP or other credentials could be for flower manufacturers who want to charge high-end pricing for their harvests. “If you’re a flower cultivator and that’s all you’re focusing on, there are price premiums in international markets for some of these [certified] products.”
What’s in a name?
Various types of certifications exist in the global cannabis sector, and they are dependent on the regions in which a manufacturer would want to distribute.
“One is the IMC-GAP or CUMCS certification, required to be able to supply into the Israeli medical cannabis market,” said Anand. “If you want to supply into Australia, the UK, or Germany, you would then look at getting EU-GMP or TGA-GMP certification.”
Another important differentiation to note is that the GMP designation is only applied post-harvest, meaning anytime the product is taken off the plant, that’s where GMP would begin. Before that, all certified activities related to cultivation would be GACP (Good Agricultural and Collection Practices).
Anand pointed out that there’s a misnomer that EU-GMP is somehow state-of-the-art or the gold standard of credentials.
“[EU-GMP] is a good certification standard, but because there’s a mutual recognition agreement between countries, there’s no real difference between the different GMP aspects,” he said. “If you’re going to be selling predominantly into Germany, if that’s your focus market, then of course it makes sense for you to be able to get a German regulator, [but] now what we’re seeing is companies also going to places like Australia and getting the Australian certification.”
What can GACP do for a cultivator?
McIntyre Creek Cannabis (MCCI) is a Canadian premium outdoor cultivator based in British Columbia, and getting the GACP certification was an essential part of their ongoing plan.
“MCCI prepared our cultivation program from our inaugural year with the mindset of GACP and organic certification by continually advancing our program year after year,” said Quinn Shiskin, President of MCCI. “Our first successful GACP audit and qualification was achieved in 2022 from examining our 2021 growing program.”
He added that GACP certification shows a commitment to a higher standard in the marketplace and instills trust from other companies as well as consumers.
“This accreditation not only ensures consistent product quality that exceeds consumer expectations, but also demonstrates our proactive approach to regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability.”
When asked about costs, Shiskin said that the physical cost was not a limiting factor, but a significant investment of time and resources went into it. Ultimately, it was all worth it for them.
“Despite the initial ‘costs’, the long-term benefits far outweighed them by seeing improvements in product quality, regulatory compliance, quality cannabis reputation, all of which have strengthened our position in the industry,” he said.
From the mouths of brokers
For a complete look into what these international credentials can do for sales, StratCann turned to Shannon Kloet, Co-Founder of the Tamerlane Trading Company, a brokerage located in Canada and the US.
“In the international market, the most prominent requirement is that cannabis is grown under GACP standards,” said Kloet. “[For processing] we often get asked about GMP or EU-GMP certification. GMP/EU-GMP products can generally garner higher prices. However, before deciding to go this route it would be important to perform a cost-benefit analysis, as the ROI could take some time to materialize.”
Kloet added that as the cannabis trade normalizes in various countries, qualitative grading standards will ultimately increase trust and transparency, making transactions more efficient for buyers and sellers.
“As the cannabis industry matures, we are going to see cannabis products traded like any other commodity. This means that standardization will become more prominent, not less,” Kloet said. “It is recommended that those not currently adhering to GACP standards consider adopting them as a good business practice for the future, regardless of plans to trade internationally.”
Like everything else in the cannabis industry, or any CPG sector for that matter, certifying to obtain increased trade and quality comes down to how much value it brings to the venture itself. If it turns out to be the right move, showing proof that a product is grown or manufactured at a higher standard has never hurt anyone.

According to statistics from Health Canada, the regulator of the marijuana industry in Canada, exports of medical marijuana from the country have reached a record-setting $189 million as local producers grapple with numerous domestic challenges ranging from prohibitive taxes to cutthroat competition on the domestic market.
The current value of exports for the year ended March 2024 marked a 36% increase from exports registered last year ($116.5 million). This notable increase in exports follows a growing trend that saw the country export medical marijuana products worth $5.8 million in the 2019–2020 fiscal year, $28.4 million in 2020–2021 fiscal year and $77.9 million in fiscal year 2021–2022.
Health Canada commented that the latest data could change as more figures become available and the agency adjusts current records.
Many Canadian marijuana businesses have been looking to leverage overseas opportunities amid stifling hurdles on the domestic front. The near-prohibitive, excise-sales levies imposed by local governments and the federal government are some of the main reasons why the domestic market isn’t as lucrative as it previously was. Deepak Anand, the head of Surrey-based ASDA Consultancy Services, says Canada is reaping the benefits of being a first mover in the marijuana industry after it legalized cannabis toward the end of 2018.
Several other factors have combined to position Canada well on the international market, he says. First, the country has built a reputation as a supplier of top-quality medical marijuana products internationally. Secondly, other countries that have also legalized marijuana, such as Colombia, have faced regulatory issues that have hamstrung their ability to compete internationally.
Those challenges holding back potential competitors have given Canada an edge on the international market, Anand believes.
The rising exports of medical marijuana are in sharp contrast to sales on the domestic market. Sales have been declining consistently over the past few years due to several factors, such as lack of access to medical marijuana products in pharmacies and low levels of reimbursement for marijuana products by insurers in the country.
Quanta Consulting’s Mitchell Osak asserts that conditions for local medical-marijuana producers are worsened by the fact that individuals can often buy the same products at a cheaper price by simply visiting a recreational-marijuana retail outlet. This has robbed medical marijuana suppliers of a significant proportion of that market, especially price-sensitive buyers.
Savvy licensed producers of medical marijuana have discovered that they can see higher profits by penetrating the international market for their products, and that has encouraged many to explore sales abroad.
As the regulatory climate in the Unites States shows no sign of improving to the extent that entities there can thrive, companies such as Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (CSE: TRUL) (OTCQX: TCNNF) could also benefit from exploring the opportunities that exist in markets outside the country.

It was love at first sight when I saw the peach-leaved bellflower. A cottage garden favorite, peach-leaved bellflowers tick all the boxes. They are hardy, reasonably disease-resistant, and can be grown in soft pastel shades of mauve, white, or pink. They are almost half a meter in height and are perfect for the back of a perennial bed. Producing large outward-faced bell-shaped flowers that cascade up the stalk, they bloom late spring right through to July.
Part of the campanula family, which includes trailing varieties and those that trundle along the ground, my adoration of campanula persicifolia warrants the honour of plant of the month.
Bellflowers Are Easy to Care For!
Hardy to zone 3 or -35°C, peach-leaved bellflowers are one of the easiest plants to care for. They prefer full to partial sunlight in moist, well-draining soil. You only need to water them when the soil surface appears dry. As the flowers fade, remove them from the stem; within days, another bud will form, and new flowers will appear. They will keep blooming until the real heat of summer.
They will require some support through wind and rain. I use stakes to hold each stem, but encompassing the clump with a tomato cage works, too.
Pests and Diseases
Peach-leaved bellflowers can be prone to powdery mildew and slugs, but I haven’t encountered these issues.
How do You Propagate Peach-Leaved Bellflowers?
Unlike other plants with long fibrous tap roots, peach-leaved bellflowers enjoy feeling cramped into a container.
Divide the plants every three to five years and create new colonies to spread the wealth throughout the garden. Peach-leaved bellflowers are also self-seeding. If the flower head is left to dry out naturally, capsules will develop that produce and release seeds.
Cuttings can also propagate peach-leaved bellflowers. Removing the bottom leaves about two inches up the stem. Bury the cut end in two inches of well-draining potting mix, keep it moist and warm until roots form, and then transplant it back into the garden.

With a Little Love, Flowers Will Thrive for a Longtime
Once established, a peach-leaved bellflower will live for decades, self-seeding and spreading throughout the garden. What’s not to like about that? My two clumps have survived cold winters, hot summers and drought; after almost ten years, they still look beautiful. They are a haven for butterflies and bees, and the resident hummingbirds get very possessive if another hummingbird dares to interrupt their meal.
Foxgloves, delphinium, cranesbill, salvia, and Lamb’s Ear are great companion plants for this whimsical cottage garden favorite. With synonyms that include Fairy Bells and Fairy Bellflower, they might even entice a garden gnome or nature fairy to come by for a visit!
