9 Ways To Tame a Mischievous Monkey Mind

9 Ways To Tame a Mischievous Monkey Mind

9 Ways To Tame a Mischievous Monkey Mind

monkey mind

“I am burdened with what the Buddhists call the monkey mind —the thoughts that swing from limb to limb, stopping only to scratch themselves, spit and howl.” Elizabeth Gilbert

Everyone, without exception, suffers from a restless monkey mind—an expression The Buddha coined millennia ago when he likened the thoughts in our head to a crowd of drunken monkeys.

If you are lucky, your mind’s incessant activity may be, at worst, irritating — like having a swarm of pesky flies buzzing around your head all day long that won’t go away.

Or, if you’re less fortunate, your troublesome monkey mind may be more like King Kong crashing through the jungle on amphetamines, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation in his wake.

Either way, having a howling chatterbox swinging around between your ears all day long is an inescapable part of the human condition.

What to do about it?

How to get out of your head to find lasting peace?

Abraham Lincoln once said “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.”

And it’s exactly the same with the mind.

As you go through the following 9 tips, you’ll see that the key to dealing with a troublesome monkey mind is to get to know it better. You’ll  then understand why it doesn’t have nearly as much power to disturb your peace as you may have thought.

Fortunately for us, the Buddha and other great teachers left behind a host of practical ways to deal with a mischievous monkey mind.

9 Things That Will Help You Quiet Your Monkey Mind

1. Know You’re Not A Special Case—Everyone Has A Restless Mind

There is no such thing as peace of mind. Mind means disturbance; restlessness itself is mind. — Nisargadatta Maharaj

Researchers tell us that the average person has around 70,000 thoughts per day. Even people who are relatively calm and laid back still have a crazy amount of traffic going on between their ears.

So don’t beat yourself up for having a lot of thoughts. Restlessness is the nature of the mind. Expecting it not to be busy is like expecting the grass not to be green.

The first step towards making peace with a restless monkey mind is to accept that it’s busy. Don’t create additional stress through fighting the fact.

2. See Your Mind, Don’t Be Your Mind

Most of the thinking patterns that drive you nuts run on autopilot. You unconsciously play them over and over in your head like broken records.

It is not so much your thoughts that cause you trouble, more your identification with them. You suffer when you wallow in them, chew them over, marinate in them— in short, when you are attached to them.

To find peace, it’s good to create some breathing space, some blue sky between yourself and the mind. Take a step back and objectively watch your thoughts—as you would sit on a riverbank watching the river flow by.

3. The Undercurrent And The Observer

In mindfulness meditation, we use a model called “the undercurrent and the observer” to illustrate our true relationship with the mind.

The undercurrent is the continuous flow of thoughts, feelings, emotions and impressions that pass through your awareness. It is self-arising.

In other words, it is not something you have any control over.

The observer is the one who is aware of the undercurrent. Unlike the thoughts, feelings and emotions, which change constantly, the observer (you could also call it your awareness) is constant and unchanging.

When you have a happy thought, you are aware of it. Likewise, when you have a sad thought, you are aware of that too. It is the same awareness that’s aware in both cases. Thoughts are many. Awareness is one.

Realise that the mind is only part of who you are—otherwise you wouldn’t be able to watch it.

4. Leave The Mind In Peace To Do Its Dance

Most of the suffering we experience at the hands of the mind comes, not from thoughts themselves, but from our resistance to them.

The path to peace is to sit quietly on the riverbank, letting the river take it’s course. Both pleasant and unpleasant thoughts (feelings and emotions too) will come along. Let them come and go without resistance.

My teacher used to say, “Roll out the red carpet to EVERY thought—positive or negative. The less you resist, the more peace you will experience.

Most people thrash about waist-deep in the river like crazed traffic policemen, frantically trying to control the flow. Resistance to the content of the mind is the main cause of suffering.

What happens to a sad thought if you don’t mind it being there?

Here’s a quote from my book “Kick The Thinking Habit.” (download it for free below).

“Don’t be concerned about the thoughts that come and go. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Leave the mind in peace to do its dance, and it will leave you in peace to do yours. Don’t touch it at all, and you will remain untouched by it.”

5. Don’t Take Your Thoughts Personally

Another reason we suffer so much from our busy monkey minds is that we take our thoughts so damn seriously—and personally.

Understanding that the content of my mind is self-arising and therefore not personal, was a game-changer for me.

Before that, I believed I was the author of my thoughts. I felt personally responsible for the thoughts that appeared uninvited in my head. (I’m happy to expand on this if you care to leave a comment.)

The mind is very much like a computer, spitting out thoughts in accordance with what has been programmed into it. (editor-perhaps also a receiver)

The thoughts that appear in your head are echoes of the past, reflections of your childhood and cultural conditioning. Given your past history, you could not be having thoughts other than the ones you are experiencing.

They are not who you are.

6. Don’t Believe Everything Your Monkey Mind Tells You

Another reason many people suffer at the hands of an overactive monkey mind is that they believe everything the mind tells them.

Most of us have a ton of self-critical thoughts—usually echoes of what we took on board as children, when we were too young to discern truth from fiction.

“You’re a bad boy. You’re not good enough. You’ll never amount to anything. The world is against you. People don’t like you.”

Take everything the mind says with a large pinch of salt. The mind will tell you a load of baloney—but you don’t have to believe it.

Be like inspector Columbo. Challenge every belief the mind throws at you.

If you believe, for example, that you’ll never amount to anything, think of all the things you’ve successfully achieved in your life. Build a compelling case to prove the opposite.

You’ll find that most of your long-held beliefs will crumble under a little scrutiny.

7. Thoughts And Thinking Are Two Different Things

As mentioned before, there is nothing you can do to stop the thoughts that appear in your head. They arise by themselves.

Thinking is another matter, however.

Let’s say the thought appears, “My boss doesn’t like me.”

Before you know it, you find yourself catastrophising about the future, “ He’s going to fire me for sure. What will I do then? I’ll probably end up homeless, destitute and living on the streets with nothing to eat.”

This type of thinking usually occurs as an unconscious knee-jerk reaction and, if you’re aware enough to catch yourself doing it, you can choose to stop it in any moment.

Just think, “Whoaahh! Hold on a minute. I don’t even know for sure that he doesn’t like me, let alone that he’s going to fire me.  And besides, who knows what will or won’t happen in future?

8. The Monkey Mind Can’t Exist In The Present Moment

Following on from the last point, another way to stop unconscious thinking in its tracks is to bring your attention to the present moment instead.

Your attention can only be in one place at a time. When you catch yourself running some old self-defeating story in your head, STOP.

Put your attention on your breath as it flows in and out, the sensation of your feet coming into contact with the ground. Tune in to the warmth in the palms of your hands or the sound of the wind or the birds singing .

There is nothing that can make you continue running a broken old mind-movie in your head if you choose not to. You are the one in charge.

Becoming mindful of your surroundings is a great way to hit the stop button.

“Everyone should meditate for at least 20 minutes a day. If you are too busy, you should meditate for an hour.” — Zen proverb

For me personally, having a regular meditation practice is my No. 1 weapon for combatting a mischievous monkey mind.

There are two main reasons we suffer.

The first is lack of awareness. We become lost in unproductive mind-movies without even realising we’re doing it. The second is believing the mind is who we are—identification with thoughts

Meditation helps dissolve both these issues.

Thoughts are like little clouds passing across the sky of your awareness. Different types of cloud come and go— some dark, some light— but the sky remains unchanged and unaffected.

There is a part of your being that, like the sky, remains untouched by the monkey mind. It remains ever at peace.

Regular practice will help you identify less and less with the passing thoughts and more and more with the awareness that is your true Self.

Meditation will help you create an intimate relationship with the ground of unshakeable peace within.

The Mind Only Has As Much Power As You Give It

When you are experiencing swarms of intense thoughts, it is normal to feel overwhelmed and powerless.

But the truth is, the mind only has as much power as you give it— through identifying with it, judging it, believing it and taking thoughts personally.

Use the 9 tips above to change how you relate to the mind and you’ll find it doesn’t have nearly as much power to disturb your peace as you thought.

Leave the monkey mind in peace to do its dance and it will leave you in peace to do yours.

Why Psychedelics Could Encounter Regulatory Roadblocks at State, Federal Levels

Why Psychedelics Could Encounter Regulatory Roadblocks at State, Federal Levels

A recent influx in psychedelic-related research has revealed that some classic psychedelic drugs have the potential to offer long-term relief against several mental disorders. The expanding scientific literature states that psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and ayahuasca may be able to treat debilitating mental disorders, including treatment-resistant depression, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

As a result, there have been growing calls to legalize therapeutic psychedelic use to provide mental-health patients with access to safer and more effective alternative treatments. However, regulatory roadblocks at the state and federal levels could frustrate efforts to legalize psychedelics for therapeutic use.

Oregon launched the first program for the sale of psychedelics in the country last year, but other states have been taking it extremely slow. Some are currently funding psychedelic clinical trials while their legislators discuss the regulations and rules required to reverse several decades of prohibition. Even if state lawmakers choose to legalize therapeutic psychedelic use, federal guidelines that classify hallucinogenic drugs as Schedule I substances having no accepted medical use may add additional barriers.

Mason Marks, Harvard Law School visiting professor and leader of the school’s Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, & BioethicsProject on Psychedelics Law & Regulation, explained that the excitement for psychedelics is due to a critical need for novel treatment options. He noted that while some people report dramatic results after only a single session of psychedelic-assisted therapy, such results may not be typical and some individuals report adverse experiences or no medical benefit at all.

Marks also said that while psychedelics have shown promise in PTSD, addiction and depression treatments, scientists still don’t understand the underlying mechanisms that grant psychedelics their therapeutic properties. According to Marks, states such as Connecticut, Washington and Texas may not be affected by federal regulations because they partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to fund psychedelic research.

However, other state psychedelic programs that haven’t been sanctioned by federal agencies such as the FDA and DEA, such as Oregon’s psychedelic program, currently conflict with federal law, Marks says. He observes that while some states may assume federal agencies won’t interfere with state-regulated psychedelic programs, the assumption is far from safe, especially for states such as Colorado and Oregon, which are regulating psychedelics differently from marijuana.

Federal agencies can go after states that choose to regulate Schedule I controlled substances such as cannabis and psychedelics. Although those agencies haven’t intervened in recent years as the country’s state-level cannabis sector has expanded, they may intervene soon if states begin to legalize psychedelics en masse.

For drug-development companies such as atai Life Sciences N.V. (NASDAQ: ATAI) that have opted to follow the FDA process for drug development, no threat of regulatory intervention exists because they are following federally approved rules for companies seeking to bring new medicines onto the market.

Nextleaf Solutions announces they are debt-free, cash flow positive

Nextleaf Solutions announces they are debt-free, cash flow positive

In its 2023 financial report, BC-based cannabis processor Nextleaf Solutions Ltd. says it achieved four quarters of consistently positive cash flow in the past fiscal year.

The company is now debt-free, which is attributed to reduced operating expenses, increased revenue, and improved gross margin. Nextleaf reports total gross revenue for the fiscal year-end (FY) 2023, totalling nearly $10 million, with a gross profit of $2.3 million.

The cannabis producer’s year-over-year gross revenue increased by $4.6 million, representing a growth of 186.1% compared to the previous year. In just the fourth quarter of 2023, Nextleaf generated around $3.3 million in revenue, a 24% increase from the previous quarter and a 77.7% year-over-year growth from Q4 of FY2022.

Located in Port Coquitlam, BC, Nextleaf offers an array of cannabis 2.0 products, such as cannabis oils, capsules and vape pens.

Nextleaf has experienced significant commercial growth in Fiscal Year 2023, marked by a series of impactful initiatives and successes. In 2023 it launched 15 new products into the Canadian non-medical market, including three softgel SKUs, four ingestible oil SKUs, and eight vape SKUs. It also recently launched an in-house brand called High Plains that includes infused pre-rolls.

The company’s products are now distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. The company’s Glacial Gold brand is the top-selling cannabis softgel brand in BC, a category that had seen an uptick in sales in BC in 2023. It was the number four selling softgel in Ontario in Q4 2023.

“This was a monumental year for our business. 2023 delivered the framework for financial stability. This provided the confidence that we have the tenacity, talent, technology, and tactics to ride the waves inherent in this industry. Despite the complexity, we’ve remained very focused on delivering one simple premise…value,” shares Emma Andrews, Interim CEO.

“We’ve worked through growing pains and roadblocks, overcoming setbacks and stigma. It has fortified our team, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come,” continues Andrews, “we’ve put in a lot of hard work to get here, and we’re just getting started. There’s a collective understanding of the unique inflection point we are at.”

Canada’s cannabis production rallied in second half of 2023

Canada’s cannabis production rallied in second half of 2023

Cannabis production in Canada rallied in the second half of 2023 after a seven-month decline following a high water mark in November 2022.

Chained at 2017 dollar rates, the value of cannabis production in the legal industry in Canada reached $6.47 million, the highest it has been in 2023 since February.

While the regulated industry has shown steady year-over-year growth since 2018, the level of growth has been slowing as the industry begins to hit a potential ceiling in demand within the confines of the regulations.

The low in June 2023 of $5.78 million was the lowest since November 2021, as the industry appears to be potentially levelling out.

Legal cannabis stores, which, although not as pronounced as cannabis production, have also been increasing year-over-year since 2018 despite some slight monthly declines. Through 2023, however, those increases began to slow down, with November’s $1,079,000 being slightly lower than October’s $1,082,000, although still well above $872,000 in November 2022.

At the same time, the unregulated cannabis industry has been slowly but steadily declining over the same time. In October 2018, the GDP for the unregulated cannabis industry was $2.73 million, with month-over-month declines since, arriving at $1.64 million in November 2023.

Money from unlicensed cannabis stores showed a similar decline, with revenue in October 2018 at $1.26 million, followed by month-over-month declines to just $692,000 in November 2023. Legal, fully-regulated retail stores passed unregulated stores in December 2021.

Rockwool And The Hydroponic Garden: The King Of All Substrates?

Rockwool And The Hydroponic Garden: The King Of All Substrates?

Rockwool is special. While you’ve probably noted the inclusion of Rockwool (aka stone wool or mineral wool) on lists of soilless growing media options, a mere bullet point belies its special status. Casually including Rockwool as ‘just another option’ in the world of hydroponics fails to do justice to its special characteristics—unique traits that truly set it apart from other soilless substrates.

A good place to start is to pay humble attention to common practices in commercial agriculture. Professionals know what they’re doing, and—will you look at that—Rockwool is everywhere! From propagation plugs for starting seedlings and stem cuttings to various-sized blocks and slabs, Rockwool is the go-to soilless growing medium for professional growers—for good reasons.

Sterility

Admittedly, “sterility” probably falls short of conjuring up much excitement or intrigue—especially if you’re a member of the “living soil” crowd. However, I’d argue that sterility is a crucial starting point for successful indoor growing. Without natural checks and balances, introduce pests at your peril. With Rockwool, thanks to the super high temperatures involved in its manufacturing process, no fungus gnat eggs or pathogens can survive to make their way into your grow room. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for many compost-based or coco-coir potting mixes.

Water and Air

Plants needs water and oxygen.

Plants needs water and oxygen.

Plant roots want to have their cake and eat it, too! For optimal health and metabolism, root hairs demand access to water and oxygen at the same time, and that can be tricky to deliver in practice—especially for container gardeners using soil-based potting mixes prone to being over-watered. Fortunately, Rockwool couldn’t be better suited to meeting this challenge of simultaneous water and oxygen supply. Even when “saturated,” the porous structure of Rockwool allows for excellent air exchange, ensuring that plant roots receive ample oxygen for healthy growth.

Inert

This is another word that typically fails to pique interest—but you should be paying attention to this one, especially if you’re carefully mixing up hydroponic feed solutions. Rockwool’s status as an inert material means that it won’t start chemically reacting with your nutrient solution or influence the pH of the rhizosphere. Poorly buffered coco coir, on the other hand, can claw back calcium and replace it with excess potassium, unbalancing your nutrient solution after the first pass. If you re-circulate, this will inevitably lead to all sorts of aggravation. On the other hand, Rockwool always gives you precise control over nutrient levels and pH.

Easy, Homogenous, and Convenient

Rockwool doesn’t just come in pre-formed cubes, blocks, and slabs. Other formats include loose fibers (known as Rockwool flock or granulate) and “croutons”—both of which make excellent loose-fill media options for containers if you swing that way. I enjoy the convenience and homogeneity of grow blocks—my favorite being called “Hugo”—a 6″ x 6” Rockwool grow block manufactured by industry leader Grodan. You can be sure that each of your plants is enjoying the same media volume, and there are no pots to fill—or clean. You’ll also be amazed at the size and harvest a relatively small block of Rockwool can support. Like I said, it’s a super media!

Insulation

No—I’m not talking about your attic space, although the hydrophobic variety of Rockwool is well-known for this application. Rockwool’s insulative properties also benefit plant roots, especially since many LED-powered indoor gardens run at significantly higher air temperatures. Rockwool-grown plants enjoy more stable root zone temperatures, promoting healthy root development.

Rockwool providing insulation for plant.

Rockwool providing insulation for plant.

For those of you who remain sceptical of Rockwool’s myriad benefits, I tentatively suggest that you have fallen victim to what I will call “Rockwool misinformation”. Let’s take a glance over the usual suspects:

  • “It’s non-renewable and eco-unfriendly.” Rockwool is derived from basalt rock—one of the most ubiquitous and abundant rock types on our planet—and chalk, which is also extremely plentiful. Yes, lots of energy is needed to turn this rock into lava and spin it—but the result is miraculous and well worth it.
  • “It’s bad for you.” Some folks confuse Rockwool with fiberglass or asbestos—completely different fish kettles. While it is true that Rockwool fibres can be irritating to the skin, eyes, and even respiratory system if proper precautions are not taken, it’s easy and even pleasant to handle in practice. Some grower friends don marigolds whenever they handle dry Rockwool. It’s never bothered me.
  • “It’s just for the pros.” There are some fundamental errors to avoid with Rockwool, such as not over-saturating propagation plugs and allowing larger grow blocks and slabs time to drain properly before transplanting—but these are easily avoided with care and attention.
  • “It’s a pain to pre-soak.” Some brands of Rockwool still require a pre-soak in pH-adjusted water or nutrient solution for several hours (or overnight) to reduce the alkaline pH to a range that’s more suitable for hydroponics. However, modern Rockwool products—and yes, I’m thinking specifically of Grodan—no longer require pre-soaking due to advancements in buffering technologies.

Rockwool Tips for Beginners

  • Rockwool starter cubes are ideal for starting seeds or rooting stem cuttings. Soak them in pH-adjusted (5.5 – 6.0) water and shake them to drain excess moisture.
  • Start feeding (very lightly!) when your seedlings show their first true set of leaves or when roots appear out of the cube.
  • Only transplant into a larger block when roots are prolific—bursting out everywhere!
  • Don’t “stack” blocks (i.e. place a 3″ block on top of a 6″ block on top of a slab.) — the root crown will get too dry, and the plant may become physically unstable.
  • Pre-soak blocks and slabs in the same strength nutrient solution that your plants are already used to. Let them sit and drain for 24 hours before transplanting.
  • Fresh transplants won’t need irrigating for a few days, at least!
  • Top feeding with drippers is the best approach to irrigation. Once established, a good approach is to follow the “precision irrigation” technique outlined by Grodan. This means keeping EC high (especially for LED grow rooms), with the first irrigation timed for about an hour after lights on. Irrigations should be short, typically around 10 – 15 seconds per event, and regular—every hour, up until an hour or two before lights out. Regular “micro-irrigations” best exploit Rockwool’s zero CEC (cation exchange capacity). While the day’s first irrigation event might not generate any run-off, you should dial in your irrigation regime so that subsequent irrigations do. Keep an eye on the EC of your run-off, and don’t let it climb more than 25% higher than your input EC.
  • Use block covers to reduce salt build-up due to evaporation and algae growth on the top surface of the blocks.
  • Don’t overestimate how much Rockwool you need! A Hugo 6″x6″ grow block is just 3.2L but can arguably support the same size plant as a 7L container filled with coco coir, as long as it’s irrigated regularly.
  • Dry-back is essential, especially during the transition, flowering, and fruiting stages—but don’t allow your grow blocks or slabs to dry out more than 50% of their saturated weight.

Rockwool producing super plants.

Rockwool producing super plants.

While misconceptions about Rockwool may have deterred some from using it, the truth is that this versatile “super-substrate” can generate next-level results—very high yields with excellent flavors. So try it in your propagation tent first, and thank me later!

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces 2024 GLP-1 Human and Animal Studies Roadmap

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces 2024 GLP-1 Human and Animal Studies Roadmap

image
  • Lexaria, a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, has laid down its GLP-1 human and animal studies roadmap for the 2024 calendar year
  • This builds on the success of its human pilot study, which marked a successful undertaking for exploring its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology for the improved delivery of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide, available commercially in the branded product Rybelsus(R)
  • The company’s chronic dosing animal study and its second human pilot study will commence in Spring and run for 12 weeks. The third human pilot study will start in May or June
  • These studies will evaluate DehydraTECH for the improved delivery of GLP-1 drugs, designed to support prospective commercial partnering with global pharmaceutical companies

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, has announced five additional studies that aim to support commercial partnering for glucagon-like peptide-1 (“GLP-1”) agonists with its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology. This follows the update on the final results from its human pilot study in what marked a successful undertaking for exploring DehydraTECH for the improved delivery of the GLP-1 drug Rybelsus(R), reduced side effects, enhanced weight loss, and improved health outcomes, per recent Zacks report (https://cnw.fm/auy9e).

Of note from the human pilot study was the sustained higher levels of semaglutide in blood using DehydraTECH technology, even 24 hours after a single dose.  DehydraTECH processing technology enhancements also achieved better blood glucose control, faster peak drug delivery and reduced side effects.

The 2024 GLP-1 study program will aim to characterize the pharmacokinetics of DehydraTECH processing technology enhancements while also exploring the commercial applicability of DehydraTECH-formulated versions of semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide. Lexaria plans to embark on one animal, three human studies, and long-term stability testing on DehydraTECH compositions of GLP-1 agonists. All of these proposed studies will depend upon sufficient funding, and all human studies will be investigator initiated non-registrational studies, and will require certain approvals before they commence.

Lexaria’s chronic dosing animal study will advance 12 arms with 8-10 obese rats per arm. It is scheduled to commence in Spring 2024. It will run for 12 weeks, with the primary objective of evaluating weight loss, pharmacokinetics, and blood sugar control over the duration of the study. Once completed, a full analysis will be performed, and results will be shared with stakeholders. This study will use DehydraTECH formulations of semaglutide and liraglutide alone and with DehydraTECH-CBD.

A second human pilot study will begin in Spring 2024, with the third starting in May or June 2024. The latter will enroll up to eight healthy human volunteers and evaluate DehydraTECH’s effectiveness in combination with a dual-action GLP-1 agonist and a glucose-dependent insulintropic peptide (“GIP”) drug absent in the SNAC formulation. It will build on the second human clinical study, whose primary objective would be to evaluate tolerability, side effects, pharmacokinetics, and blood sugar control.

For the 2024 calendar year, Lexaria also plans to evaluate the chemical and microbiological purity and stability of select DehydraTECH compositions over 6-12 months. This long term stability testing is crucial if oral variants of GLP-1 drugs are to be seriously considered as replacements for currently injectable versions of these drugs. All the studies lined up for the year will support this objective, and the company’s management is optimistic that it will be realized.
