What is the Shadow Jungian Archetype?

Uncontrolled bursts of anger, sexual addiction, strange phobias, unexpected deep depressions, unshakeable self-loathing, and self-destructive tendencies are all signs of the shadow archetype – and we all have one.

The shadow archetype, also known as the shadow self or dark side of humanity, can be seen throughout myth and legend since the dawn of humanity.

If you’d like to discover your shadow archetype, some examples, and how it influences your life, you’ll find that and more right here!

What is the Shadow Jungian Archetype?

Image of a person wearing a scary mask at night symbolic of the shadow self archetype

How can anyone see straight when he does not even see himself and the darkness he unconsciously carries with him into all his dealings?

– C. G. Jung, The Essential Jung

We can thank Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung for his idea of psychological archetypes, which are patterns that appear repeatedly within human consciousness.

Among the many archetypes within our species is one that Jung named the Shadow, which is the dark, suppressed, and hidden side of our nature.

How Does Your Shadow Form (and Signs It’s Active)?

Image of a shadow figure alone in a barren landscape

For one reason or another, we all have abandoned parts within ourselves that we reject either consciously or unconsciously.

These rejected parts are often deemed “ugly,” “bad,” “unworthy,” “outrageous,” “unlovable,” or even “dangerous,” and so they’re cast out from our conscious-facing personalities (also called our “persona”).

But these outlawed fragments of ourselves don’t just disappear into thin air. Instead, they get buried, locked away, and, in some cases, actively blocked off within our deep unconscious minds.

The longer these shadow parts are cut off from the light of consciousness, the more they fester and build up like a seething volcano waiting to explode.

Incidents of intense rage, emotional meltdowns, mental health crises, addictions, dark nights of the soul, and many other issues are signs that the shadow is trying to get our attention.

Why Should You Face Your Shadows?

Image of a woman looking into a mirror holding a candle at night symbolic of practicing shadow work

To be liberated from the self-destructive force of our shadows, we must turn toward them.

We must integrate the shadow archetype into our lives by befriending it and finding the hidden gifts that it carries. In the words of Jung,

Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

(Psychology and Religion

Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle writes about the shadow archetype, referring to it as the “pain-body.” He writes:

The pain-body, which is the dark shadow cast by the ego, is actually afraid of the light of your consciousness. It is afraid of being found out. Its survival depends on your unconscious identification with it, as well as on your unconscious fear of facing the pain that lives in you. But if you don’t face it, if you don’t bring the light of your consciousness into the pain, you will be forced to relive it again and again.

(The Power of Now)

Mouse Study Shows Microdoses of Psilocybin Can Combat Anhedonia

Mouse Study Shows Microdoses of Psilocybin Can Combat Anhedonia

Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark have discovered that microdoses of psilocybin, the main psychoactive agent in mushrooms, may be able to alleviate anhedonia. The study used a mouse study to discover that regular small doses of the psychedelic may offer therapeutic benefits against stress-induced anhedonia, a condition that strips individuals of their ability to feel pleasure, and compulsive behavior.

Furthermore, psilocybin exhibited therapeutic effectiveness in mice with anhedonia and compulsive behaviors without inducing side effects such as schizophrenia-like symptoms and anxiety.

The University of Southern Denmark University team published its findings in the “Molecular Psychiatry journal.

Most of the past studies involving psilocybin typically measure the effect of high psilocybin doses and traditional talk therapy against conditions such as addiction and depression. This type of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has exhibited significant effectiveness in prior studies, but scientists still haven’t researched the potential effects of psychedelic microdosing in great detail.

Microdosing refers to the use of smaller doses. It has gained popularity in culturally significant places, including Silicon Valley, where an increased number of high-power professionals have reported microdosing various psychedelics to improve their mental clarity. Since microdosing involves taking doses that aren’t large enough to trigger a psychedelic experience, it allows individuals to potentially enjoy some of the benefits of psychedelics without being intoxicated.

University of Southern Denmark Department of Clinical Research associate professor and study author Mikael Palner says he was especially interested in how psychedelic drugs interact with the serotonergic system. His master’s thesis focused on developing radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET) scans of 5-HT2A receptors, and Palner’s attention turned to microdosing during his time as a Stanford University postdoc from 2012 to 2015.

Palmer and his colleague Martin Korsbak Madsen first carried out a human study analyzing psilocybin bound to the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor and how this binding impacted the psychedelic experience. Their findings paved the way for the recent animal study with new and more scientific means of defining microdoses, Palner says.

The research team used 78 Long Evans rats and housed them under several different controlled conditions. After establishing what constituted a “microdose” the researchers provided the mice with psilocybin microdoses every other day for 24 days. Throughout the study, they measured several metrics including compulsive actions, reaction to stress and anxiety levels.

The scientists found that regular psilocybin microdosing was associated with increased resistance to stress-induced anhedonia, a condition that regularly affects people with depression. The research team also found that regular psilocybin microdoses did not result in behavioral desensitization, meaning potential treatments could be consistently effective when used long-term.

This safety for long-term use is a major plus for psychedelic treatments. Companies such as Seelos Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: SEEL) are looking to commercialize hallucinogenic formulations as an answer to the various concerns people have about the side effects of many of existing mental-health treatments.

  • A recent study shows that medical cannabis treatment may be associated with improvements in health-related quality of life
  • Study data indicated that chronic noncancer pain was the most common indication for treatment, followed by cancer pain, insomnia and anxiety
  • MedCana is building the technology, laboratories, growing facilities and scientific teams needed to provide premium pharmaceutical-grade cannabis extracts to the world

Cannabis, long shrouded in controversy, is stepping into the limelight of scientific inquiry, revealing a complex tapestry of potential benefits. Software Effective Solutions (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ), a global infrastructure and holding company in the cannabis industry, is paying close attention to growing data showing the power of the natural substance.

One recent study, conducted by postdoctoral research fellow Thomas Arkell, a PhD at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, suggests that medical cannabis treatment may be associated with improvements in health-related quality of life among patients with a range of health conditions (https://cnw.fm/3kvjz). The results of the study were published earlier this year by JAMA Network Open.

“The use of cannabis as a medicine is becoming increasingly prevalent,” the report stated. “Given the diverse range of conditions being treated with medical cannabis, as well as the vast array of products and dose forms available, clinical evidence incorporating patient-reported outcomes may help determine safety and efficacy.” According to the report, this case series study was conducted at a network of specialist medical clinics and included patients who received treatment for any indication between December 2018 and May 2022.

Results of the study, which included 3,148 patients, were noteworthy. Study data indicated that chronic noncancer pain was the most common indication for treatment, followed by cancer pain, insomnia and anxiety. “After commencing treatment with medical cannabis, patients reported significant improvements relative to baseline on all eight domains of the SF-36 (the 36-item short form health survey questionnaire), and these improvements were mostly sustained over time,” JAMA reported. After controlling for potential confounders in a regression model, treatment with medical cannabis indicated marked improvement.

This is just one of innumerable studies focused on cannabis. Recently, NORML, a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of the tens of millions of Americans who use marijuana responsibly, reported that there are more than 36,000 peer-reviewed papers in the scientific literature referencing the cannabis plant and its cannabinoids, according to a keyword search on the search engine PubMed Central, the U.S. government repository for peer-reviewed scientific research (https://cnw.fm/R8w0G).

“In recent years, this volume of research has grown exponentially, with more than 20,000 papers published just in the past decade,” the report noted. “Much of this more recent research has been dedicated to exploring and verifying cannabis’ therapeutic activities in various patient populations – including in FDA-approved gold-standard clinical trials. A summary of this clinical trial data concluded: ‘Evidence is accumulating that cannabinoids may be useful medicine for certain indications. . . . The classification of marijuana as a Schedule I drug as well as the continuing controversy as to whether or not cannabis is of medical value are obstacles to medical progress in this area. Based on evidence currently available, the Schedule I classification is not tenable; it is not accurate that cannabis has no medical value, or that information on safety is lacking.’”

This is positive news for MedCana, which has five companies focused on pharmaceutical cannabis production, as well a software company focused on managing processes for plant-to-patient operations. In addition, the company recently rounded out its portfolio of holdings with the acquisition of an irrigation and greenhouse technology company.

MedCana’s focus is on developing clients and companies in Latin America, initially in Colombia, and partnerships with laboratories, research facilities and hospitals throughout the world. MedCana is building the technology, laboratories, growing facilities and scientific teams needed to provide premium pharmaceutical-grade cannabis extracts to the world.

Confessions of a UK Hydro Store: Kitbagshop

Confessions of a UK Hydro Store: Kitbagshop

Kitbagshop Hydroponics opened its doors in 1999 and has been going full speed ahead ever since. The shop has helped pave the way for hydroponic growers in the UK, offering customers complete home-designed grow kits, lights, tents, and plant nutrients. If they don’t stock it, you don’t need it! We convinced the founder of Kitbagshop, Chris Jaques, to reveal his secrets in this edition of Confessions of a UK Hydro Shop!

Kitbagshop's store front in Nuneaton, UK

Kitbagshop's store front in Nuneaton, UK

You’ve had your shop for 25 years; that’s a long time! What are some things that have and haven’t changed over the years?

When I opened my shop, I was stepping into the unknown, investing my hard-earned money into something that the UK high street had never seen before; it was risky business. Everyone I spoke to dismissed my idea. I was 19 years old, but I had that feeling in my bones that it would work. I made great contacts and friends in the UK and Europe, and I still have them today! When my customers started rolling in, it felt like we were starting a new adventure, changing the entire scene. Some of my clients are like old friends now, and that’s how I treat everyone who comes to our shop. Regarding what’s in stock, the transition from HPS to LED is the biggest change I’ve ever seen in this industry.

You were one of the first shops selling online. How has that influenced/changed your business?

When eBay came along, it was mainly for selling second-hand stuff online for silly money. In 2005, my dad asked why we weren’t selling our grow equipment online. I didn’t think anyone would buy our products online and have it posted to their house. He encouraged me to create a listing because if you don’t try, you’ll never know. The item was a 4″ TT fan and filter kit for £79.99. The next morning, I saw the listing had sold out! We decided to list everything in the shop, which changed our business overnight. Over the next few years, we had containers, warehouses full of stock, and a large staff working with us. We didn’t have time to look back; the industry was changing as quickly as we were.

What are some of your favourite products?

I love selling Scrog nets to my hobby growers when they are looking to improve their grow rooms. In lockdown, the demand for Hornet Coco A+B was unreal, and the final quality is 10/10; that’s my go-to feed for beginners and experts. And finally, Rope Ratchets, a simple product that came to the market about 15 years ago.

Mistakes are a great learning tool when gardening.

Mistakes are a great learning tool when gardening.

What makes your store unique?

We are a proper family business that is trusted and respected. We never dress things up or try to hit you with a big sale. We want you to learn and be successful, and we are a good old-fashioned, friendly grow shop that is always here to help.

What is the most common problem your customers come to you with?

This time of year, it’s heat; either too hot or too cold. With the lighting side of the business making such a big change to LED in the last few years, it’s affecting the temps coming up to winter, mainly for people growing in the garden shed or loft. We offer many heaters, timers, and controllers to solve this seasonal problem.

Kitbagshop Hydro Store has great offerings.

Kitbagshop Hydro Store has great offerings.

What type of music do you play in the store?

You always need a bit of bass going off in the shop. It’s more relaxing and makes the customer feel at ease. We play a bit of old-school hip hop, 90s dance, Chase & Status; I’m easy. My sister covers my days off, and she likes peace and quiet. It drives me crazy! We now agree on Radio 2. LOL!

Tea, coffee, or both?

We don’t do tea or coffee; if you’re drinking tea or coffee at work, you’re not working. I hate seeing people walking around with tea or coffee like it’s the holy grail, warming their bodies, or just standing around chatting. I’m sorry, it reminds me of school teacher breath or something. A bottle of water or pop is cool with me.

What advice would you give someone thinking about starting their first grow?

Go at your own time and pace. Listen to friends, forums, and grow shop owners, but take it at face value. Growing is a skill that takes time. It can be as complicated or as easy as you want to make it; you need to make mistakes to learn. The key is good light, airflow, genetics, and nutrients.

What advice would you give to someone opening a shop today?

Think about it; read up on retail and how it works. Just because your local grow shop is busy doesn’t mean yours will be. Often, new shops are like lambs sent to slaughter, with some wholesalers forgetting where their bread is buttered. Know that there are better ways than undercutting other shops; you need to make a profit to pay your bills, rent, VAT tax, and wages. If there’s already a grow shop in your town, don’t bother; you’ll both lose money. But if you’ve got the investment, talk to the local store. They might want to sell, and then you have it all in one ready-made business.

See what Chris is talking about for yourself! Pop into the shop in Nuneaton or check them out online at kitbagshop.co.uk

420 with CNW — DeSantis Hints Cannabis Ballot Measure Will Appear on State Ballot

image

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis anticipates the inclusion of the marijuana legalization proposal on the November ballot. DeSantis expressed optimism that proponents of marijuana legalization would prevail in the Supreme Court, despite resistance from Ashley Moody, the state’s attorney general, who is attempting to stop the vote.

The Florida Supreme Court has not yet rendered a decision, which is expected by April 1, 2024, in the lawsuit against the Smart and Safe Florida campaign, despite hearing oral arguments in November.

It’s unclear if DeSantis is merely forecasting based on the difficulties at hand or if he has heard back from the court regarding the case’s current standing, which is still considering the Attorney General’s legal challenge. Moody has urged the court to strike down the proposal, even though legalization advocates were able to gather about a million signatures to get it on the ballot. Despite his opposition to the reform and his campaign vow to oppose federal decriminalization, the governor stated that Florida residents should have the final say on the matter this time around.

Before withdrawing from the GOP presidential nomination race, DeSantis stated that if elected president, he would accept state decisions regarding cannabis legalization, even if he believes the reform is detrimental. Despite falling short of the state’s 60% requirement for passing, the reform initiative is supported by most potential voters, according to a recent poll conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Still, past surveys, such as a University of North Florida survey—showed that 67% of respondents supported the initiative, indicating high support.

Should the measure be passed, it will change the Florida constitution to allow already-established medical marijuana businesses to sell cannabis to anyone over the age of 21 years of age. Cannabis concentrate product purchases are capped at five grams, and home cultivation is not allowed.

Additionally, activists’ preferred equality provisions, such as expungements or other forms of relief for those with prior cannabis convictions, are absent from the measure.

According to DeSantis’ economic analysts, should voters approve the measure, new sales tax income may range from $195.6 million to $431.3 million a year. And those numbers might increase significantly if legislators were to apply an extra excise tax on marijuana sales, similar to other states where cannabis is legal.

However, DeSantis has stated unequivocally that he still doesn’t support the bill, regardless of its possible economic benefits. Recently, he made the claim that some people are utilizing the medical cannabis program as a cover for recreational use, which may be contributing to the state’s rise in the number of patients.

The entire cannabis industry, including leading companies such as Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: CGC) (TSX: WEED), will be watching the outcome of the matter before the state supreme court and the polls later this year.
