We know it’s National Poinsettia Day, but may we be bold enough to suggest not splurging on this traditional holiday houseplant this year? Dissing the poinsettia on its special day seems absurd. But let’s explore why you should skip this popular potted plant and opt for something else to deck your halls this year.
Why We Say Skip ‘em
The poinsettia’s bright red showy display makes it appealing at Christmastime. But have you ever kept a poinsettia longer than two months? Me neither. And that seems wasteful. We’re all about the biggest bang for your buck at Garden Culture.
The truth is that even experienced gardeners have trouble keeping this plant alive after the holidays because it comes from a greenhouse environment and doesn’t like fluctuating temperatures or moisture levels. That’s not to say you can’t keep one from season to season, but it won’t be easy. Or pretty.
Speaking of unpretty, although not poisonous, poinsettias are toxic to pets and humans and will cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. A skin rash is also possible for some after handling the plant.
Another dark truth about poinsettias? Pests love them, whiteflies especially. You might also have problems with aphids, thrips, spider mites, and fungi gnats, to name a few. And no serious plant lover wants to introduce those into the indoor growing environment.
Are you ready to break away from a longstanding tradition? Let’s take a look at some incredible alternatives that put poinsettias to shame.
Norfolk Island Pine
The Norfolk Island Pine tops our list of holiday plant alternatives to poinsettias, and it’s easy to see why. This beautiful evergreen is a landscape plant in zones 10-11 but can be grown indoors in all other areas. If you treat it like a houseplant, it’ll grow from three to eight feet tall – outside, it can grow up to 200 feet! Caring for this beauty is pretty straightforward – it likes a lot of light and warm conditions. Mist it daily and give it a deep watering every two weeks. Decorate it at Christmastime, and afterward, enjoy its greenery throughout all other seasons.
Wintergreen
Wintergreen plants make lovely groundcover outside and typically peak in the winter when everything else in the garden sleeps. The leaves are rubbery and glossy green; many varieties produce bell-shaped flowers and bright red berries. Outside, this plant spreads via rhizomes. However, you can enjoy this cold-season stunner indoors in your favorite container! It enjoys bright light and only grows 6” high with a spread of around 12-18”. Wintergreen is a beautiful houseplant with a festive twist!
Kalanchoe
This pretty houseplant is an excellent alternative to poinsettias, typically blooming around Christmas and beyond. It’s super hardy and requires very little maintenance. Clusters of tiny flowers form above dark green, waxy foliage. You can choose plants with various colored flowers, so if red isn’t your favorite, you don’t have to stick to it! Pest problems are rare; if you take good care of the plant, you can keep Kalanchoe and watch it bloom again next year!
Christmas Cactus
Do you have an anxious pet who likes to chew things when you leave the house? Then the Christmas cactus is for you! Not that we want your plant to be devoured by Fido, but if it happens, he’ll be just fine (which can’t be said for the poinsettia). The Christmas cactus is long-lasting and flowers in pink or lilac throughout the winter, depending on the variety. After the blooms fade, you can enjoy its greenery throughout the year. This houseplant needs to be watered well every two to three weeks and likes dappled sunlight.
Houseplants in General
If you have a tall-growing, prickly cactus, consider decorating it with a string of lights or a garland. You can do the same with just about any houseplant. There’s no hard rule that you have to fill your house with traditional Christmas plants. Choose a variety that speaks to you and that you can enjoy year-round, with or without decorations!

(Globe Newswire) Runaway Bay, Jamaica — Rose Hill, a premium psilocybin cultivator, supplier processor, and exporter in Jamaica, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with ACS Laboratory, an award-winning testing facility. ACS Laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited, DEA licensed and CLIA licensed.
Combining Rose Hill’s mastery of psilocybin finished products with ACS Laboratory’s expertise, this collaboration aims to set a new industry standard for accurate, consistent, and proficient potency and purity testing, covering pesticides, mycotoxins, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbiology panels.
Rose Hill’s products will now include QR codes linked to ACS Laboratory’s Certificates of Analysis (COA), verifying the test results that all formulas are clean and safe to consume. This first of its kind initiative pioneers the application of rigorous testing of psilocybin as a traditional consumer packaged good (CPG), establishing standards that set a critical precedent in a largely unregulated field. Transparent test results also allow licensed retailers and practitioners to make informed choices and confidently select high-quality psilocybin for their clients and patients.
Domenic Suppa, co-founder and chief operations officer of Rose Hill, emphasizes, “The collaboration with ACS Laboratory signifies our dedication to advancing the psychedelic industry through rigorous research and a commitment to the highest quality standards. Our partnership seeks to establish unparalleled testing methodologies, ensuring safe and therapeutically beneficial psilocybin products.”

Rose Hill has been a trailblazer in producing top-tier, multi-strain psilocybin genetics and innovative cultivation solutions since its establishment in 2015. The company has consistently led research efforts while supplying premier biomass to esteemed research institutions. Notably, Rose Hill achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Health Canada’s approval for the first legal export of psilocybin from Jamaica to Canada. This certification allowed Rose Hill to provide exclusive, proprietary psilocybin biomass to a distinguished Canadian researcher and a leading provider of psychedelic-assisted therapies. Today, it allows Rose Hill to harness ACS Laboratory’s testing methodologies to launch forthcoming studies in 2024.
ACS Laboratory’s ability to quantify psilocybin, psilocin, and eight other active compounds in the mushrooms creates an opportunity to understand more about the therapeutic benefits of these complex fungi.
Roger Brown, president of ACS Laboratory, said, “The partnership between ACS Laboratory and Rose Hill reflects a shared dedication to responsible growth in the psilocybin market. Our joint mission is to conduct meticulous and reliable testing, upholding the industry’s highest quality and safety standards. Our commitment to advancing psychedelic research is evident through our pivotal role in facilitating legal and innovative developments in therapeutic psilocybin use.”
America’s longevity movement, a growing community of people committed to reversing aging, is the latest group to take notice of psychedelics. A recent surge of psychedelic-related studies has revealed that hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, ayahuasca and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) have the potential to treat several mental disorders.
These initial studies have found that psychedelics can be especially effective when paired with traditional talk therapy, offering long-term relief against hard-to-treat conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders and treatment-resistant depression, with few side effects and at minimal doses. The findings have been so promising that researchers and mental-health experts are now working to complete clinical research efforts, secure FDA approval and develop psychedelic-based mental health treatments for the public.
While psychedelics can be instrumental in treating mental anguish and end-of-life anxiety in patients with terminal cancer, the longevity movement is looking to leverage hallucinogens in a completely novel manner. Entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, a tech mogul who says he has limited his speed of aging by around 31 years, is a member of this movement.
This year’s Wonderland conference incorporated psychedelics and longevity into its agenda for 2023 and edited its tagline to read “Psychedelics. Longevity. Mental Health.” The conference included sessions covering different medical approaches to longevity as well as related research and the longevity market.
Biomedical gerontologist and reverse aging proponent Aubrey de Grey, who has also served as Sense Research Foundation’s chief science officer, noted that there was “clear enthusiasm” in the groups’ intersection. De Grey held a talk on rejuvenation interventions for middle-aged mice by the Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation.
The conference also featured advertisements for synthetic immune system technology and longevity clinics for healthspan extension. De Grey says that he saw a proposed plan titled “How to make everyone live to 120 by 2050.”
Inventor and author Dave Asprey talked about living to at least age 180 and promoted a neurofeedback program that produces audio or visual cues of electrical activity in the brain.
Many longevity proponents say that psychedelics could extend lifespans by alleviating mental-health symptoms, increasing brain chemicals and connections, and even reducing inflammation in the brain. However, researching the connection between psychedelics and longevity has and will continue to prove challenging. Psychedelics are still illegal across most of the country, and the FDA would not approve clinical trials for something it doesn’t consider to be a disease (aging). Drug research and development in this segment will face significant hurdles and will likely take time.

Despite concerns voiced by critics regarding the potential surge in problematic cannabis use following legalization, recently released federal data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reveals a different narrative. The SAMHSA analysis, which covered 2021 and was released last week, showed that the states with the greatest rates of treatment admissions for cannabis were those where sales of the drug were still illegal. The data showed that admissions to substance-use treatment services at state-licensed facilities for people aged 12 year of age and older totaled approximately 1.5 million countrywide.
According to the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), 10.2% of all recorded admissions involved cannabis or hashish as the major drug. This placed cannabis as the fourth most-used drug, following alcohol (34.8%), heroin (20.2%) and methamphetamine (13.5%). Notably, states with the highest per capita admissions for cannabis as a major substance did not have legal recreational sales at the beginning of 2021, despite some allowing medical cannabis use.
South Dakota led the list with 151 admissions per 100,000 people, followed by Iowa, Connecticut, South Carolina, Minnesota, New York, Wyoming, Georgia, North Dakota and New Jersey. States with the lowest marijuana admission rates were New Hampshire, New Mexico, West Virginia, Montana, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Arizona, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Oregon and Washington, both of which legalized recreational cannabis sales in 2021, did not report data for the SAMHSA report.
Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), a prohibitionist group, pointed out that admissions for marijuana treatment in 2021 declined by more than 10,000 compared to the previous year, despite more states embracing legalization. Heroin treatment admissions also experienced a more substantial decrease during the same timeframe.
However, interpreting admission numbers as indicative of drug-use disorders comes with challenges. Factors such as available space, resources and referral mechanisms impact the types of services individuals receive and for what drugs. For example, self-referral was the most popular referral route in 2021, but the criminal justice system, which differs greatly between states, was the second most popular approach.
A study based on the SAMHSA report from September revealed a decline in referrals for cannabis-related treatment after legalization, attributed to reduced marijuana-related arrests among individuals aged between 18 and 24. Although criminal justice referrals were decreasing nationally, states with legalized marijuana saw a steeper decline post-legalization.
Despite the positive aspect of fewer admissions related to the war on drugs, concerns were raised as admissions fell amid increasing risk factors for problematic cannabis use. Instead of advocating for more criminal justice referrals, the report suggested a greater role for primary care healthcare professionals in recognizing and referring individuals with marijuana use disorder to treatment.
In a different study conducted in August, researchers found that there was a drop in the number of referrals to foster care after cannabis legalization. States that legalized recreational marijuana did not see an increase in foster care admissions associated with drug usage by parents or teenagers.
Conversely, a University of Mississippi study conducted last year linked recreational cannabis legalization to an average minimum 10% drop in foster care admissions, which includes neglect, physical abuse, parental incarceration, and alcohol and other drug abuse.
The body of scientific literature dispelling many of the claims made by prohibitionists is growing, and it shows that ending prohibition and allowing cannabis companies such as SNDL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNDL) to open shop brings benefits without the harms that legalization opponents often mention.

Located in BC’s North Okanagan, Living Cannabis takes a high-tech, low-impact approach to its small-batch cannabis grown in living soil.
The BC-based micro cultivator’s Master Grower, Gerrit Richards, not only has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Horticulture and has studied the soil food web, but he’s also a long-time cannabis user and advocate of medical cannabis. Gerrit is committed to holistic, organic, and regenerative soil management practices.
Richards and Beth Talbot, who started her career in medical cannabis, handle the cultivation duties, while one of the co-owners, Brad Marta, keeps the financials and paperwork in order at Living Cannabis, licensed since 2020.
“We wanted to create a legal cannabis company that focused on organic cannabis produced with low-waste methods and a hands-on approach to each and every plant and bud,” Marta tells StratCann. “No mass-produced factory farming here. As a micro cultivator operated by a small team of family and friends, we cherish the opportunity to care for every plant. We hang dry and hand trim all our products.”
That means no synthetic inputs and potential pests are managed with beneficial insects in their three small grow rooms within their allotted 200 square meters of cultivation space.
While pathways to market for a micro cultivator can be difficult, Marta says they have focused on quality products to build their brand, rather than marketing budgets.
“Like many other micro cultivators, getting to market and staying has been a long, hard battle,” adds Marta. “Our main focus right now is consistency in producing a good quality product that the consumer can be confident has been grown with care and attention.
“We’re just a little guy trying to battle with the giants. Given all that has happened in the market over the past couple of years, we’re proud that we’re still around to compete. What distinguishes us most from the big guys is as a micro cultivator, our smaller footprint allows us to take a hands-on approach to every aspect of our operation.”
Richards, the Master Grower, says one of the things helping Living Cannabis stand out is their attention to this kind of detail and their living soil growing methods, which he maintains gives their cannabis its unique terroir.
“We grow for more than just potency. Although that’s important in today’s market, there is a lot more depth to these plants,” says Richards. “We are adamant about the link between soil microbiology and the production of secondary metabolites such as cannabinoids, terpenes, esters, flavonoids, etc., within plants.”
Marta says Living Cannabis has been selling its products through JVCC’s BC Black brand in BC and Ontario, including its recently sold-out Triple OG and some select offerings in Ontario like Blackberry Pancake. Living Cannabis is also part of a pre-roll sample pack called BC Craft Road Trip, available through BC’s direct delivery. Their genetics come from their internal seed bank and through partners like Life Cycle Botanics.
Having good partners like processors and nurseries is key, he adds, especially for a micro cultivator with a small staff who doesn’t necessarily have the time to reach out to retailers.
“We’re so busy as a cultivator, and our processor has been really helpful in getting a pulse of the market. They’ve often been our eyes and ears on what’s happening with retailers. Since we started, we have been so focused on growing, but we plan to connect more with retailers in the near future by providing them with better information on who we are and what we strive to do, starting with the revamp of our website in the new year.
“One lesson I’ve learned through this whole process is that you can’t go too big too fast; you’ll run out of cashflow because you’re going to have a hard time raising any extra capital. So I try to always keep that in mind for us. We try to get one thing right before moving on to the next idea.”
Right now, times are not easy for many small craft cannabis growers, with prices dropping and costs increasing, but this also leads to a leaner and more competitive industry, explains Marta.
“Now we’re seeing in the industry who can run lean and maintain cashflow and still produce a great product, while others are posting losses in the millions or shutting down entirely. I’m really proud of how we’ve progressed as a company, financially, and with our operations as a whole. I do hope one day that, as a co-owner, I can recoup my investment and pay myself more than minimum wage. But I also know many small growers who still aren’t even paying themselves a dime yet, all the while everyone else in the supply chain is getting a cheque. It’s going to be a long road to get better, but I’m still optimistic we’ll get there one day, eventually.”
“I think we’ll see a slight levelling out of product supply as larger cultivators start scaling back operations, but market prices these next 12 months are still going to be a big challenge for everyone in the industry.”
“Once we get through this stage, I hope the market will start to rebound, and cultivators can make a decent return. I hope the federal government realizes how much their excise tax is affecting the little guys who have invested so much of their own money into micro-cultivation, yet aren’t able to make a decent income, if any at all. I think micro cultivators are the future for this market, and the powers that be need to recognize this and support us. However, I’m not holding my breath that anything will happen soon, so for the time being, I know we’re on our own.”

No thoughtful self respecting human being can deny that within the political institutions responsible for administrating human affairs today, there are only a tiny fraction of individuals who put responsibility for caring for fellow humans and our planet, at the top of their agenda – if at all.
‘Democracy’ is what many still believe to be the best solution for citizen governance, these same people also hold that the politicians elected via national voting systems are ‘servants of the people’, since constitutionally that is what is indicated. Members of parliament entrusted with responsibility for accounting to those who elect them.
However, is spite of the fact that the general mass of the populace cling to the dream of a world in which democracy means a form of governance being ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’, upon inspection the reality is precisely the opposite.
Those beguiling men and women who portray themselves as saviours and saints of their communities prior to their election, shape shift into self serving parasites to the program of the globalist shadow government as soon as they become elected into office.
And what does the electorate do about this?
Some allow themselves to think that such a state of affairs is somehow inevitable ‘in this corrupted world’. Others express dismay and loudly proclaim that they will vote for the opposition party at the next election (..and get precisely the same result). Yet others try to ignore the reality altogether, muttering cynically about ‘not voting at all in the future’.
A very small minority hold their elected representatives to account, demanding that they stand by the policies they promised to support before the election. Not that such determination necessarily produces the desired result; but it is at least honourable.
The net result of all this is that parliamentarians, senators and congressman, each of whom is primarily concerned with making a successful political career, fall instantly in line with the ‘party program’. A top-down fixed agenda, based upon the wishes of the corporate billionaire donors whose fulsome funding comes with an assurance that their support will be properly reciprocated.
Democracy in action, you understand.
The man or woman you thought was going to fight for the electorate’s interests at the local and regional level, turns out to simply be a puppet to those higher up the political pyramid. The new parliamentarians, if they didn’t know already, soon find out that the only way to keep their political prospects alive, is to follow the party agenda and never step out of line.
In the UK, any intention to deviate from the party line is greeted with the threat of being ‘whipped’, meaning being forced to comply with the will of the leaders – or face being expelled from the party.
Now that we grasp the essentially tunnel vision fixation of our party political systems, we can turn our attention to the agenda of the global shadow power nucleus around which everything is actually turning.
For those not fully aware of the motivation of this small but all powerful cabal – which prefers to remain in the shadows – it is a profound shock to be faced with the realisation that everything being visibly played-out under the predominant influence of globalisation, is an ulterior motive and charade for something considerably more sinister hatched out of sight and therefore ‘out of mind’ – of the great majority of world citizens, including most of the politicians they elect.
We don’t need to go into the details of what mainstream media calls ‘fake news’ and ‘conspiracy theories’. Those reading this article will already be more than familiar with the increasingly desperate attempt of the shadow government cabal – and therefore also the national governments they control, to discredit – or in severe cases to dispose of – those armed with truth and the determination to make it known.
Anyone not shaken to the core by events in Gaza since October 7, will also be unlikely to recognise the significance of the abject failure of nation states and their government representatives to step outside their political straightjackets and come to the rescue of a country whose essentially defenceless citizens are being systematically and brutally murdered in their thousands, in full view of everyone with a screen on their living room wall or office desk.
For the cabal, ‘non intervention’ is what it’s all about, because this shadowy sect is the motivating force behind the horror and takes a darkly parasitic interest in benefiting from the consequences.
The inability, or refusal of nations and key spokes-people to take a coordinated, international humanitarian stand in the face of this holocaust, reveals an unbroken chain reaction whose inception can be traced back to the parliamentarian I mentioned earlier, who failed to stand his ground thus capitulating to the will of senior figureheads in order not to jeopardise an overriding ambition to further his all important career.
Here is where the slide into slavery begins and the true expression of human liberty ends; the innate responsibility of the sentient, moral human, to act in the cause of truth and justice – superseded instead by the narcissistic desire to feed the demands of an insatiable ego.
Now juxtapose this with the top of the pyramid cult ambition to live-out the fantasy ‘God-King’
bloodline dream of attaining ‘absolute power’ through ‘absolute possession’ – and the links in the chain slot into place.
Klaus Schwab’s proclamation “You will own nothing and you will be happy” simply exposes the program whereby our homes and related assets are to be confiscated in the interests of a totalitarian regime declaring itself to be the only authority able to align the whole planet with the ‘sustainable development’ goals of the Great Reset and Green New Deal.
Ironic indeed is the choice of the term ‘sustainable development’ to describe the take-over of the world by a small clique of psychopathic megalomaniacs, using the great global warming deception ‘Net Zero by 2050’ to authenticate the enforcement of its global power grab.
But it was known well in advance that this ploy would be sure to work, because less grandiose versions have already been practised successfully for decades – if not centuries – under the ‘problem, reaction, solution’ formula. Invent a crisis, provoke a reaction and come up with a solution to the problem you created.
How many cabal initiated false flags have been used to catalyse a preplanned outcome over the past twenty five years alone?
The likes of Schwab, Gates, Soros, Rockefeller and Rothschild are the visible end of this control agenda. So are the global institutions like the United Nations, World Economic Forum, World Health Organisation and European Union. Then there are the bankers like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Layman Brothers that team-up with semi secret societies like the Bilderberg Club, Trilateral Commission, Club of Rome and Chatham House.
Also visible and boasting crushing financial powers are asset management firms like Black Rock, Vanguard and UBS. Not to mention behemoths like the Military Industrial Project and Silicon Valley.
All these, and many more of course, are the outward material expression of an inner compulsion to dominate, and in the process crush the natural order expressed in ecology, family, community, creativity, diversity and spirituality.
Answering to this vast conglomerate of aggressive globalisation parasites, are the parliaments of Nation states, playing out their subterfuge of democratic governance and ‘proper management’ of national resources.
Do they have an agenda in any way separate from the globalist cabal?
Are they standing-up for their professed ‘democratic’ belief in justice, honour and fundamental human rights?
Are they fighting to protect the sanctity of ownership, privacy and human dignity?
Are they defending the rights of their constituents to have direct access to affordable non-denatured foods free from toxins and laboratory engineered genetic distortions?
Are those who sit in these parliaments setting a worthy example by the way they conduct their own lives?
Apart from those few individuals who determinedly stand their ground and fulfil their duties of office, there is really nothing to distinguish the behaviour and attitude of those in government to those at the forefront of the globalist rape of humanity’s planetary resource base and all life forms that depend on it.
In the end, they too are agents of destruction, apologetically and passively complicit in their failure to take a stand against the crushing of all who resist a life of slavery.
So what really are governments these days?
They are institutions that offer the cowardly pretence of deliberating on the merits or demerits of adopting what is, in reality, a top down fixed and secretive agenda serving the cause of a ‘Great Reset’ and a ‘New World Order’ to be administered by a centralised AI form of robotic technocracy.
Working hand in hand with communication industry masters of mass hypnosis, they spin slavery to the cabal as ‘the proper workings of society’.
Across the world, governments handling of Covid, with very few exceptions, was a collective agreement to engage in genocide.
Is it any wonder then, that these same governments cower behind a veil of collusion in refusing to take action to prevent the mass genocide being perpetrated in Gaza?
‘We the people’ have an extraordinary challenge ahead of us in order to take back control of our destinies and ultimately our planet.
No longer should we hold any illusions about the role of our political institutions. They are a dangerous sham; a dark hypocritical playhouse whose vanity laden games with democracy are rapidly leading to self inflicted collapse.
It is most certainly not our duty to try and save them, but to adopt instead a bold, fresh and inspiring approach that brings out the best qualities of the human race, so as to break through the dystopian matrix and set in motion a true sense of direction and purpose. One able to rise above and eventually vanquish the demonic forces unashamedly intent on our complete impoverishment.

Overcoming the Robotic Mind – Why Humanity Must Come Through
Lewis Fausak is passionate about soil; he studies it as an applied biology education and research technician in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia. He also writes and illustrates children’s books about soil.
For the past few years, there’s been a push to draw attention to World Soil Day and how imperative healthy soil is to the planet. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), and the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) have invited educators and soil enthusiasts from around the world to enter a children’s book contest and write about soil. In 2021, “The Beetles: A Salty Soil Adventure,” co-authored by Fausak and fellow soil enthusiasts, won first prize. This book draws attention to the dangers of soil salinity around the world.
GCM: What sparked your interest in soil science as a career?
LF: In high school, I was always interested in science: biology, chemistry, and physics. I took the “Introduction to Soil Science” course and was hooked. Soils are fascinating to me because they marry all the sciences into one – you can study the chemistry of nutrients, minerals, and water, the biology of plants, fungi, insects, and microbes, or the physics of water movement, soil structure, or erosion. Soil is also crucial in improving the world around us – growing food, sequestering carbon, cleaning water, and lifting people out of poverty.
GCM: How did you get involved with the FAO’s book contest?
LF: In 2020, the FAO launched a children’s booklet competition about soil science with the theme of soil biodiversity. I thought it would be a chance to flex my creative muscles and integrate soil science in a fun way that would excite people about soil’s importance. The Carbon Crystal Heist in 2020 was all about the soil’s ability to sequester carbon. In 2021, the theme was soil salinity and its dangers. “The Beetles: A Salty Soil Adventure” won first prize. Last year, the theme was regenerative agriculture, and we entered “Soils: Where Food Begins.”
GCM:What can you tell us about your new book on soil?
LF: I’ve started creating a story surrounding some of the artwork I have done for my Instagram. It will be a children’s book about a young scientist who discovers and learns about soil science and soils worldwide through the soil characters I create.
GCM: What is the most important thing everyone needs to know about soil?
LF: Soil is a non-renewable resource. It takes anywhere between 100-1000 years to create just one centimeter of soil! It’s estimated that 30-40% of the earth’s soils are degraded (carbon loss, erosion, salinisation, etc.). This means they’ve experienced a loss in their ability to support plant growth and perform essential ecosystem functions like filtering water, sequestering carbon, nutrient cycling, and supporting biodiversity.
GCM:On World Soil Day, what is the most important message you can pass on about saving and preserving the world’s soil?
LF: Without soil, we would not have clean drinking water. We wouldn’t have all the natural ecosystems and biodiversity to explore and inspire us, like big trees, interesting mushrooms, bugs, bears, and other animals. And we wouldn’t have the variety of foods we like to enjoy. I think we need to shift our values and attitudes around soil, which will guide us in treating this invaluable resource essential to sustaining life.
(CNW) Toronto — FunGuyz spokesperson, Samer Akila, served a Notice of Constitutional Question on the federal and provincial governments putting them on notice that he intends to legalize psilocybin in his London, Ontario court case. Akila says the psilocybin laws are contrary to freedom of thought under section 2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Lawyers Paul Lewin and Jim Dean are proud to be arguing these important issues.
Psilocybin enhances thought in many ways. It promotes focus, mindfulness, openness, connectivity, creativity, cognitive flexibility, interpersonal closeness, gratitude, well-being, peace, calm, compassion, empathy, awe, spirituality, life meaning, and ego dissolution. Psilocybin is a freedom of thought tool. Psilocybin is to freedom of thought what the printing press was to freedom of expression, what a passport is to freedom of mobility or what a church is to freedom of religion. It is a tool that allows one to experience that freedom in a more fulsome manner.
Freedom of thought is the most important of all rights.
Thought is profoundly important for democratic, religious, philosophical, spiritual, romantic, creative, medical, social, and professional decisions. Freedom of thought is necessary for the proper exercise of almost all other rights including freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of belief, freedom of opinion, and the right to vote.

This will be the first freedom of thought case in Canada. If Mr. Akila is successful, then the federal government will have to amend the law to permit adults reasonable access to psilocybin for freedom of thought purposes. Lawyer Paul Lewin states: “This case will legalize psilocybin.”
A new clinical study from the American Medical Association (AMA) has indicated that psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may be safe and effective in the treatment of bipolar II disorder depressive episodes. The nonrandomized controlled study was conducted at Baltimore’s Sheppard Pratt Hospital and involved 15 patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant BDII depression with lengthy depressive episodes.
After receiving a single psilocybin dose followed by seven psychotherapy sessions, researchers say study participants “displayed strong and persistent antidepressant effects” with no increase in mood instability of suicidality. Patients with bipolar II disorder (BDII) received a 25-milligram dose of psilocybin and had seven sessions with therapists that included three pretreatment sessions, an eight-hour dosing day and three integration sessions post treatment.
The study notes that the majority of the participants “remitted rapidly,” only a week after dosing, and the remission persisted during the entire study period. In addition, 12 of the participants met response and remission criteria after the 12-week study period, researchers say, indicating that their measures of treatment-resistant BDII depression fell below the minimum threshold during the study period. The researchers were especially impressed with the fact that just a single dose of psilocybin resulted in persistent remission more than three months for patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant cyclical mood disorder.
The study also notes that while the self-reported quality of life scores by the patients showed similar improvements, there were no significant changes in terms of suicide ideation metrics, mania and safety. Still, the researchers noted that additional follow-up was warranted, particularly regarding the intensity of the psychedelic experience and how it affects the drug’s efficacy.
Researchers say their findings pointed to an association between psychedelic experience intensity and clinical benefit, especially in individuals who did not derive significant clinical benefit from psilocybin administration. According to the study, the need for a “distinct psychedelic experience” for a therapeutic response to psychedelic use is still a point of contention in the nascent psychedelic research field.
Its findings reportedly contribute to the argument that the intensity of a psychedelic experience can determine the degree of long-term antidepressive effects. However, the researchers cautioned against using the findings as an endorsement for nonmedical psilocybin use. They urged the public not to overinterpret the findings and said that psilocybin taken under “carefully controlled and supportive conditions” may produce wildly different effects compared to psilocybin taken casually or recreationally.
The trial also excluded patients with a history of conditions such as psychosis, bipolar I, borderline personality disorder and delusions.
Companies such as atai Life Sciences N.V. (NASDAQ: ATAI) are also running drug-development activities involving psilocybin and other hallucinogens. Their findings are likely to document other conditions for which these substances can provide alternative treatments that are efficacious.
