  • Lexaria, a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, just announced additional positive interim results from its ongoing GLP-1 human pilot study
  • The study seeks to provide an early-stage indication of whether DehydraTECH(TM) processing could improve oral drug delivery characteristics of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide
  • Lexaria’s DehydraTECH GLP-1 showed a 2.9% to 14.6% blood glucose level reduction relative to baseline, compared to 1.3% to 6.7% for the control group
  • The DehydraTECH GLP-1 group also only saw a 5.3% spike in glucose levels after having a standardized meal at the 240-minute mark and a snack at the 360-minute mark, compared to 22.7% for the control group

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, just announced additional positive interim results from its ongoing human pilot study that seeks to provide an early-stage indication of whether DehydraTECH(TM) processing could improve oral drug delivery characteristics of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide. The study, which focused on Rybelsus(R), a commercially available semaglutide drug, involved seven healthy subjects, four of whom received the DehydraTECH GLP-1, with the other three receiving the control (https://cnw.fm/kr4Ic).

Of note was DehydraTECH GLP-1’s 2.9% to 14.6% blood glucose level reduction relative to baseline, compared to 1.3% to 6.7% for the control group. These results were achieved in the initial 100 minutes of taking the drugs, and at all but the 20-minute and 240-minute sample time points, the DehydraTECH GLP-1 blood glucose levels were reduced more than evidenced by the control group. More so, even 24 hours after dose administration, the blood glucose levels were reduced in the DehydraTECH GLP-1 group by 6.3% relative to baseline. In contrast, that of the control group was only reduced by 0.67%. This evidenced a nearly ten-fold improvement with DehydraTECH GLP-1.

When the subjects were permitted to eat a standardized meal at the 240-minute mark and a standardized snack at the 360-minute mark, glucose levels spiked by 22.7% for the control group, while those in the DehydraTECH GLP-1 group only saw a 5.3% rise. Although this cannot be attributed to DehydraTECH GLP-1’s overall efficacy in achieving sustained blood glucose reduction, it is a plausible explanation for the difference and a pointer to the overall potential of the technology.

While there are still some additional steps to be taken, these positive results are welcome and point to the technology’s potential, specifically in diabetes treatment. In the DIAB-A22-1 animal study, Lexaria demonstrated at least three positive outcomes, which included weight loss in obese diabetic-conditioned animals and improved triglyceride and cholesterol levels. The study also demonstrated an improvement in locomotor activity compared to untreated obese control rats, with no severe health concerns during dosing (https://cnw.fm/2BAmL).

With the results from Lexaria’s DehydraTECH GLP-1, the company is on track to replicate the positive results from its diabetes study. More importantly, it is on track to carve out a decent market share in an industry projected to bring between $150 billion and $200 billion a year (https://cnw.fm/eV0fW). By doing so, it will also ensure that GLP-1 drugs are more effective with reduced side effects while also being accessible to individuals living with diabetes. It also hopes it will improve the quality of life of people living with the condition by offering a less intrusive and less painful treatment alternative than what is currently in the market.

420 with CNW — German Lawmakers to Vote on Revised Cannabis Legalization Measure Next Week

image

Legislators in Germany have decided to revise a bill to legalize cannabis in the country, a week before they cast their final vote on it in parliament. The bill to legalize marijuana is being championed by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, who first discussed details concerning the revised legalization measure in April 2022. In May of the same year, he presented the legislative text to cabinet officials.

When responding to early criticism of the measure from law enforcement and medical groups, Lauterbach emphasized that marijuana reform would be implemented together with a campaign to educate the public on the risks of using marijuana. Last week, Kirsten Kappert-Gonther of the Green Party stated that the resolution would be revised in ways that would make it better.

The amendments would relax some provisions that were challenged by advocates and supporters in the Bundestag. After the resolution is amended, individuals found possessing between 25–30 grams of marijuana won’t automatically be treated as criminal offenders but as administrative violators. The possession limit for home-grown cannabis will also be increased to 30 grams from 25 grams.

With regard to public consumption of marijuana, individuals will not be allowed to use marijuana within 100 meters distance of a school. Prior to the amendment, this figure stood at 200 meters. Legislators also agreed that social clubs that could distribute cannabis to members may begin launching in July 2024 while home cultivation and possession of marijuana legal for adults would begin in April of next year.

Kristine Lütke, a member of the Free Democratic Party in the Bundestag, added that these revisions could bring relief to consumers and make the bill even better. In addition, legislators plan to introduce a complementary resolution that would create pilot programs for commercial sales in different cities across Germany.

Currently, it is expected that once the Bundestag approves the legalization bill, the measure may be advanced to the Bundesrat. In September of this year, members of the Bundesrat had tried and failed to block the proposed measure.

While the Federal Cabinet approved the measure’s initial framework last year, the government thought it best to receive approval from the European Union before enacting it, so they were sure they wouldn’t be violating any global obligations.

In other news, government officials from some countries, including America, met in Germany this previous week to discuss global cannabis policy issues. Last  year, Narcotics Drugs Commissioner Burkhard Blienert and a group of German legislators visited the United States and toured marijuana businesses in California to help inform their approach to legalization.

When the German cannabis market finally opens, there will be a chance for local companies grow to the levels seen by enterprises such as Verano Holdings Corp. (CSE: VRNO) (OTCQX: VRNOF) that are operating in mature marijuana markets.

‘Faith’ in the Human Race and its Governments: What a Confused State of Mind Is This?

‘Faith’ in the Human Race and its Governments: What a Confused State of Mind Is This?

‘Faith’ in the Human Race and its Governments:

What a Confused State of Mind Is This?

by Gary D. Barnett

“… faith is believing and hoping when there is little evidence for or against
something. Delusion is believing when there is an abundance of evidence against
something.”

~ Jeremy Runnells, Letter To A CES Director

Stanley Milgram began his famous obedience experiment 62 years ago, and based on that experiment, he stated that 80% of the population do not have the psychological or moral resources to defy an ‘authority’s’ order, no matter how illegitimate the order is. (All orders are illegitimate) Therefore, only 20% have critical thinking capacity, and this explains a lot. This experiment was done in the early 60s, so what might be the results today? It is now evident that only a tiny minority still retain any ability to think critically; a very precarious situation for humanity to be sure. Considering all that has taken place over these many decades, the broad-based dumbing down of society, the continuous wars of aggression, and the massive growth in dependence on rule by the collective herd, sadly, these numbers would be far worse. There can be no endorsement of the progress of man, quite the opposite is the case, as this is an indictment of the psychological and moral breakdown of society at large, and the total disregard for reason, virtue, logic, and truth.

Stanley Milgram once said: “The essence in obedience consists in the fact that a person comes to view himself as an instrument for carrying out another person’s wishes and he therefore no longer regards himself as responsible for his actions.” So, after additional consideration, I thought it prudent to speculate on the different aspects of society; to take this idea to a different level. The people used in the initial Milgram experiments, were basically normal individuals, some hand-picked and some volunteers. These were not civic ‘leaders,’ high-level politicians, rulers, or famous people, but were common Americans for the most part. What would happen if instead of regular people being the test subjects, politicians, rulers, government officials, mainstream media puppets, and military types were the ones pulling the lever in these experiments? It would be a logical assumption, that these types of people would be even more likely to inflict punishment on their fellow man on orders, as they are staunch believers of hierarchy, and are therefore more accepting of rank (class) authority.

This assumption does not bode well for a free, sane, and independent society. If well more than 80% (more like 95% in my view) of the general population today does not have the psychological and moral resources to defy ‘authority’ and embrace right and denounce wrong, and the political class and all others associated with them, are even less likely to be able to discern right from wrong, where does that leave us? Without a mass conversion by the proletariat, it leaves us completely vulnerable to eternal enslavement. One look around should be enough for anyone able to think at even a small child’s level, that mass slavery is not only being aggressively pursued, but is the common state of man throughout the world today. The current state of being is one of a master and his slaves.

No government has ever brought freedom, and of course could never do so. Government only exists through force, and force is the antithesis of freedom. Therefore, for freedom to thrive, government has to be abandoned and eliminated. There is no other way. Government and rule can only exist and survive if the masses accept and allow it, and that has always been the case, regardless that history has shown since the beginning of time, that this insane ‘ideology’ is the cause of theft, slavery, economic failure, torture, misery, poverty, war, and genocide. All government and rule is a curse on humanity.

We are living in a world that could easily be described as eternal hell, if such a place was to actually exist. That hell has befallen mankind due to his own hand. It is not the fault of one or another, of any particular ruler or king, or secret organization, or any single government, or any single ‘religion.’ It has been allowed to happen because of human weakness, cowardice, irresponsibility, indifference, dependence, envy, hatred, and the need to be part of the collective hordes of pathetic fools who make up this human race. It is one thing to crave social contact, which is natural, but it is quite another to abandon your individuality by voluntarily consenting to be ruled, controlled, abused, stolen from, slaughtered, and murdered.

Do not take my meaning out of context, as I state the obvious without constraint. I fully understand that there are some good people in this world, but they are difficult to find among the crowds of human drones. Most every government, if not all of them, are warring against their own populations, as well as in many cases, warring against others as well. The so-called “reset” agenda has let loose the globalist demons, who have joined together to depopulate this earth to make it ready for the coming ‘elite’ takeover. Alas, as this is happening, and in open view of all, few understand that every major country and government, even those who pretend to be enemies, are all working toward the same goal. While the lowly people take the bait, and hate all those they are told to hate, stay divided, stay dependent on their chosen evil masters, and accept every atrocity with little if any resistance or empathy for the innocent, the plot against them continues unabated.

Think about just the past few years, think about the terror committed in your name, consider all the death and destruction, consider all the increased poverty, lockdowns, famine, war, and murder, and try to imagine being in the shoes of others who are so much worse off than yourselves. The most evil Zionist government in Israel is right now before your eyes, committing mass genocide of an entire people, and all you do is take sides with one government or the other, while innocent men, women, and mostly children, are being tortured and slaughtered in your name, killed by weapons supplied by you through your evil proxy government. Continue fighting amongst yourselves, hating each other, and taking sides with your demon rulers, and that will certainly lead you into even more hell.

There is only one way to gain freedom, one way to break the chains that bind you, and one solution to this madness. Freedom will never happen until each individual is fully and totally responsible for himself. No government jobs, no government checks, no ‘free healthcare,’ no state police, no federal military, no subsidies, no government schools, no social security, no Medicare, no money printing, no ‘stimulus,’ no unemployment ‘insurance,’ no way to rob and force your neighbors to pay for your obligations by voting for theft; in essence, no government whatsoever. When your life is your responsibly entirely, so that your only incentive is to take care of yourself or die, then and only then can you be free.

How many of you would be willing to take that responsibility? How many would even consider it? Any honest answer to this question would bring total silence, just as is the silence today in the face of the horror, tyranny, brutality, economic destruction, and continuous slaughter and murder of the human race that most all continue to ignore. ‘Faith’ in the human race and governments: What a confused state of mind is this?

“Poor, wretched, and stupid peoples, nations determined on your own misfortune and blind to your own good! You let yourselves be deprived before your own eyes of the best part of your revenues; your fields are plundered, your homes robbed, your family heirlooms taken away. You live in such a way that you cannot claim a single thing as our own; and it would seem that you consider yourselves lucky to be loaned your property, your families, and your very lives.”

“Tyrants would distribute largess, a bushel of wheat, a gallon of wine, and a sesterce: and then everybody would shamelessly cry, “Long live the King!” The fools did not realize that they were merely recovering a portion of their own property, and that their ruler could not have given them what they were receiving without having first taken it from them.”

420 with CNW — Missouri Companies Sell Cannabis Products Worth $1B in 2023

image

Missouri’s cannabis industry has surpassed $1 billion in sales of medical and recreational marijuana products for the year 2023, as disclosed by the state’s Department of Health and Senior Services (DHHS). In October alone, retailers transacted approximately $95.5 million in recreational cannabis products and an additional $17.6 million in medical cannabis.

Although these figures reflect a slight decrease compared to the previous month, they contribute to the overall 2023 sales, pushing the state’s total marijuana revenue beyond $1.1 billion.

The trajectory of adult-use cannabis sales has exhibited a gradual increase since the commencement of sales in February. Conversely, the sales of medical cannabis have experienced a consistent decline. Notably, there has been a reduction in the number of registered medical cannabis patient cultivators, caregivers and patients throughout the year.

Cumulatively, all cannabis sales in Missouri since 2020 amount to $1.7 billion, according to the DHHS. These figures are, however, approximations, deviating from the conventional reporting format of most states, as Missouri’s DHHS rounds the numbers to the nearest $100,000.

As part of the state’s utilization of tax revenue, lawmakers recently announced the allocation of $17 million to support veterans’ drug treatment, health and legal aid initiatives.

Missouri’s cannabis industry has encountered significant challenges this year, including the recall of thousands of marijuana products due to the alleged illegal use of hemp-derived cannabinoids from outside Missouri. Regulators moved to revoke the business license of Delta Extraction, a company central to the incident. This development raised concerns, particularly regarding practices at product testing labs, which had faced criticism earlier in the year for alleged lab shopping to achieve higher THC potency numbers.

The state, however, rescinded the recall of nearly 15,000 products last month, allowing the products to be returned to dispensary shelves after a storage mandate since early August. The state’s marijuana regulator stated last month that a review of product-tracking records confirmed some recalled marijuana products contained THC sourced exclusively from Missouri’s regulated market.

Moreover, a cannabis retailer, Point Management, operating as Shangri-La, Columbia, recently settled a dispute with a union, resolving 15 charges of unfair labor practices. The settlement mandates the reinstatement of five employees and requires the retailer to compensate more than $145,000 in back pay, front pay, interest and damages for direct or foreseeable financial harm to 10 employees.

In a separate development, legislators criticized the state’s marijuana regulators for exceeding their authority in setting new rules on product branding and packaging aimed at reducing appeal to children.

The booming sales registered in Missouri may depict the broad success that established cannabis companies such as TerrAscend Corp. (TSX: TSND) (OTCQX: TSNDF) are enjoying in the markets in which they operate.

Psilocybin Clinics Swamped as Out-of-State Patients Flock to Oregon

Psilocybin Clinics Swamped as Out-of-State Patients Flock to Oregon

In 2020, the state of Oregon became the first in the country to legalize psilocybin mushrooms for mental-health treatment through a voter-approved initiative. In January 2023, the state became the first in the country to legalize adult=use psilocybin. In June, Oregon launched its first licensed psilocybin services center. Since then, 17 other licensed centers have launched, with the number of out-of-state visitors recorded thus far being significantly greater than patients from Oregon.

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic that is produced by more than 200 mushroom species. Numerous studies have shown that this psychedelic compound holds the potential to treat mental-health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, severe depression and end-of-life anxiety among the terminally ill.

Andreas Met, cofounder of Satya Therapeutics, believes most of his clients come to Oregon from states such as New York, Indiana and Texas to seek treatment for a range of mental-health conditions. In addition, the co-owner of another psilocybin center, Omnia Group Ashland, estimates that roughly 80% of its clients are out-of-state visitors.

Clint Martin, cofounder of The Journey Service Center, revealed that 95% of its customers were also out-of-state visitors. He noted that the center was located 10 minutes from the airport, which made it ideal for the psychedelic tourist.

These entrepreneurs believe that most patients travel to Oregon to take the drug in a safe setting. This is despite the fact that psilocybin treatment is expensive, costing more than $2,000 for an hours long trip.

Accounts from patients who  have received the treatment highlight its benefits. One patient, JC Harvey, had been depressed for half his life and also suffered from post-traumatic stress and anxiety. A resident of Oklahoma, Harvey visited Satya Therapeutics with the hope of alleviating his long-standing depression after years trying all manner of conventional treatments with little success.

Having had no prior experience with psychedelics, Harvey was a bit nervous. However, two months after the session, he revealed that he felt completely reborn, noting that all his symptoms of depression as well as PTSD and anxiety were gone.

Harvey is one of many patients who have benefitted from Oregon’s psilocybin program. However, if this alternative treatment is to become more accessible, the price will have to go down significantly.

It is important to note that only individuals aged 21 years and older are allowed to access psilocybin in these regulated settings, under the supervision of a trained facilitator. Additionally, persons with a family or personal history of mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are discouraged from undergoing psychedelic treatment.

As psychedelic treatments from startups such as Seelos Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: SEEL) gain FDA approval and are released onto the market, they could also attract interest from individuals looking for alternative mental-health treatments.

BC Supreme Court puts pause on province’s efforts to seize $12 million in properties connected to illegal cannabis, psilocybin dispensaries

BC Supreme Court puts pause on province’s efforts to seize $12 million in properties connected to illegal cannabis, psilocybin dispensaries

BC’s Director of Civil Forfeiture wants to seize a number of properties, a vehicle, and money they say are connected to a group illegally selling cannabis and psilocybin mushrooms.

However, the Supreme Court of British Columbia wants the government to wait for upcoming appeals before moving forward with civil forfeiture proceedings.

In a ruling posted in late November, the BC government alleged several individuals acquired ten properties for approximately $12 million, without mortgages, over a period of just over two years, arguing that these were purchased with the proceeds of illegal activity.

The defendants sought to prevent the government from proceeding with the case, claiming they were seeking separate proceedings and raising Charter concerns that needed to be addressed prior to any further action by the Director of Civil Forfeiture.

The court disagreed with or dismissed some of the defendants’ concerns, but nonetheless said that the BC government will need to pause its efforts to push for civil forfeiture until it can be decided if the cases will be heard individually and any Charter concerns are addressed.

In the meantime, the provincial government can request financial records from several financial service agencies and lending institutions relating to the defendants and their businesses, but those records will be stored until these other challenges are decided.

“The order should be crafted in a way that ensures the information and records are obtained, but also ensures that the Director cannot make use of the information and documents until the bifurcation hearing has taken place and, if there is a bifurcation, until the alleged Charter breaches have been resolved,” wrote the judge.

“At that point, if the Director decides to pursue the civil forfeiture action, the information and documents should be produced in the action. If the bifurcation application(s) are not successful, the information and documents should be disclosed to the Director at that time.”

The defendants include the owners of MOTA Green Meds Ltd, Ocean Grown Medicinal Society, Animalitos Pet Wellness Corp, and several numbered companies. Ocean Grown, MOTA, and Animalitos were unlicensed cannabis dispensaries that had previously operated in BC.

Dianna Bridge, one of the owners of Ocean Grown, faced previous penalties from the BC government for operating a cannabis store without a licence, eventually accepting a monetary penalty of $12,000 in February 2021. According to court records, Bridge is also listed as a director of MOTA.

Then, in July 2021, members of BC’s Community Safety Unit (CSU) attended a commercial building in Victoria, British Columbia, to conduct an inspection. It is alleged that CSU inspectors discovered psilocybin at the location, which caused them to pause their inspection and contact local police.

Saanich Police raided the Shelbourne Street business and allegedly found packaged cannabis and records relating to the sale of cannabis products and packaging materials under the name of MOTA and Animalitos. The CSU claims it also seized a large quantity of cannabis from the property.

The BC government filed the notice of civil claim on October 6, 2022, seeking forfeiture of the ten properties, as well as a vehicle seized in a raid and the business’ proceeds. The crown contends the financial records will help it establish a connection to the $12 million in properties.

Adapting to the haze of wildfires and a changing climate

Adapting to the haze of wildfires and a changing climate

As the cannabis industry continues to make headlines about its impact on the environment and climate change, a changing climate will in turn impact the cannabis industry.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley, led by Christopher Dillis, published a paper in September of this year showing for the first time the dollar figure financial impacts of wildfires, and wildfire smoke, on California – one of the world’s largest cannabis economies.

Through using data from California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, smoke plume mapping, and cultivator surveys they were able to estimate economic losses in 2020 and 2021 were as high as $1.44 billion and $970 million respectively, due to wildfires.

“There were impacts all over. Northern California was the worst…2020 was, as I usually say, like an apocalypse.” lead researcher Dillis says.

Wildfires have been a serious problem around the world in recent years. According to the National Wildland Fire Situation Report, 2023 marked the worst wildfire season on record in Canada, a year in which more than 17.8 million hectares burned. Mapping the financial impacts of wildfires will be critical for the future of the cannabis industry, says Dillis.

Dillis and his team at Berkeley examined proximity to wildfires, percentage of growing season under a smoke plume, and used reported impacts from farmers to determine what were the likely financial impacts, and what was the likelihood of crop failure. The result was significant financial losses.

“And we found that wildfire smoke has a bigger impact than just proximity to wildfire,” says Dillis. He further explains how the correlation between smoke and the actual source of a fire is not extremely strong. Smoke has the ability to travel great distances, sometimes dropping down miles away from where the fire originated.

The same is true in reverse says Dillis. There are also fire impacts near the source that aren’t smoke plume related. “When you’re close to a fire…you can still have impacts as a result of power outages, evacuations, loss of site access.” The two are considered separately, and “we found that smoke had a more substantial effect than just distance to welfare,” he says.

There are steps governments and producers can take to work together to mitigate cannabis agricultural losses, and that plans need to be made as wildfires will continue to be a problem.

Dillis suggests implementing a subsidy or official acknowledgment through a fund that could be set up to compensate LPs for their losses.

Changing practices in a changing climate

Canada’s worst wildfire season on record comes on the heels of increasing reports about the carbon emissions output of the cannabis industry, and the massive energy consumption related to cannabis production. Canopy Growth made headlines in January 2022, when their ESG report found Canopy’s emissions were equivalent to burning over 65 million pounds of coal. However, some companies are making changes in a positive direction.

Recently, Wyld, an Oregon-based company that produces cannabis infused edibles, became the first Climate Neutral Certified cannabis company in North America.

Official Climate Neutral Certification is granted by The Climate Change Project, a non-profit organization, partnered with a diverse range of stakeholders, to help companies of all backgrounds calculate their carbon output and then put in place a plan to reduce or offset their emissions. The process for obtaining Climate Neutral Certification isn’t easy, but it is important for those companies that want to get serious about the climate.

“Climate Neutral has stringent requirements to achieve Climate Neutral Certification,” explains Gray. “Being verified by a third party, like Climate Neutral, helps validate the work we’re doing.” With 60 billion tonnes of greenhouse gasses being emitted each year, it is important for the cannabis industry to take a lead on climate action, says Gray.

Along with their Climate Neutral Certification, Wyld has produced a truly unique, 100 per cent compostable packaging, with the first compostable child resistant zipper.

“At Wyld, we’re acting now because scientifically vetted solutions to climate change exist,” says Gray.

Some say the future is sun-kissed

As more cannabis producers begin to look at reducing their carbon emissions, many may turn to outdoor production, and abandon the costly and energy intensive indoor model, says sales director Chris Becker of The Honeybee Collective, an employee-owned cannabis brand.

“Indoor growing really is pretty detrimental to the environment. It uses a ton of energy, and why do it when the sun exists, right?” questions Becker enthusiastically.

The Honeybee Collective was a brand idea born from a passion of sustainability that promotes earth and people friendly practices, says Becker. Based out of Colorado, The Honeybee Collective focuses on environmental sustainability through the use of recyclable and compostable packaging, regenerative farming practices such as no-till soil, composting and water retention. And they prioritize outdoor grown, or at least “sun-kissed” cannabis, sourcing their product from growers with outdoor fields, greenhouses and hybrid facilities.

Becker believes exciting research about sun grown cannabis will shift the market of production. Most interestingly he says, recent studies have shown that outdoor grown cannabis produces terpenes and cannabinoids at a more diverse expression. This diversity in the minor cannabinoids arguably creates a better high for the consumer. This says Becker, could be a primary driver for increased outdoor production.

“A more diverse array of minor cannabinoids tends to lead to a more enjoyable and longer lasting high, relative to just a high THC strain,” says Becker. “I think that outdoor cannabis can be equivalent or superior to indoor on almost every metric except bag appeal…but I do think that [sun grown’s] a superior product.”

Becker believes that as the cannabis market continues to mature and become oversaturated, it will be inevitable for growers to move to outdoor production as LPs realize it’s not economical to grow indoors below a certain price per pound. Thus, the cannabis market may find itself in a bind moving forward as energy costs and carbon output concerns move market participants towards outdoor grown cannabis, and environmental related issues, such as wildfires, make outdoor grown more precarious, unless strategies are put in place.

While Canada’s climate of course differs from the United States, still some see the same value.

Canadian LPs are ready to change – are governments?

North of Toronto on the shores of Lake Simcoe, one Canadian LP, Carmel Cannabis, has also experienced the benefits of “sun-kissed” cannabis, utilizing a hybrid greenhouse in their operation. Ontario sales manager John Strauss says the 19,000 square feet of sun exposed flower allows significant reductions in energy costs, while also producing staggeringly high terpene levels.

“When you’re harnessing the natural sun, you’ve got the full equation…the biggest thing we notice with our [hybrid grown] flower, the terpenes are just way higher,” says Strauss. “We’ve gotten up to 6 per cent…which is like something we never even thought was possible.”

But there are challenges to the hybrid greenhouse says Strauss. The bud structure a hybrid greenhouse produces is different than what customers may be accustomed to from full LED, there isn’t climate control, so on hot days the plants can become stressed which means they need to be fed more, and bugs and pests become more prevalent. However, Strauss says the benefits of a hybrid model outweigh any added concerns, as the benefit for the environment, and energy cost reductions is a boon for Carmel’s bottom line. And while Strauss and his team at Carmel Cannabis are concerned about the environment and carbon footprint of the cannabis industry, current economic realities are making further changes complicated.

“I think a lot of companies are just doing whatever they can to survive and their carbon footprint is kind of on the backburner,” says Strauss. “Our founders are pretty passionate about doing everything we can to lower the environmental footprint…The unfortunate reality is the environmental side is often ignored in any industry that’s kind of in its infancy.”

Strauss says that while the team at Carmel care about their environmental sustainability, assistance from governments would go a long way in making visions of a more sustainable industry a reality. Encouraging companies to switch over to more efficient LED lighting, and offering environmental sustainability subsidies would go a long way to improve the industry.

“Hopefully down the line a lot of companies are more aware of the carbon footprint and maybe even [the government] offering services to calculate your carbon footprint would be great,” explains Strauss. “Because to get a company to come in and audit your carbon footprint, we’re talking a considerable amount of money to get something like that done.”
