How to Keep the Tyrants of Reason
and Realpolitik in Check
By Gary Z. McGee
“Socrates created a tyrant out of reason.” ~Nietzsche
Before Socratic reasoning there was the amoral and Machiavellian realpolitik, which did not follow any ethical or idealistic rules. There was only the strong defeating the weak for no other “reason” than that it could and should.
As Thucydides said, speaking of the Peloponnesian War, “The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.”
Tyranny was the rule. The strong held it over the weak. The rich held it over the poor. The healthy held it over the unhealthy. The smartest held it over the dumbest. Morality was not a reason outside the realm of “because I can,” but fully lodged within it.
But then came Socratic reasoning. Socrate’s turned the tables on realpolitik. He flipped the script of might makes right. He put the strong man’s foot to the fire. He burned a hole through the rich man’s coin. But in doing so, he inadvertently made a tyrant of reason.
When reasoning becomes tyrannical dogmas reign, dogmas clash, dogmas have us all chasing our own tails. We become rats caught in the cage of our own “higher” reasoning. Our reasoning becomes something “other than,” something outside of us, something “out there,” or something only found in another world, or in another life. We become divorced from truth. Reality becomes a burden we must toss off for the placation of our “higher reasoning.”
Though it is vital, reason is not the only path to truth. Reason necessarily should poke a hole in pride and power. But what pokes a hole is reason? In order for reason not to become a tyrant one must take it upon oneself to poke a hole in reason so that it does not fail and become dogmatic.
Realpolitik, politics based on practical objectives rather than on ideals, morals, or ethics, must be clipped by reason lest unbridled pride reign over a dog-eat-dog world. But then reason must be clipped by humor lest bridled egos reign in a dogma vis-à-vis dogma world.
The Overman is above the ordinary man because he is neither a slave to reason nor a slave to realpolitik. He is beyond “good” and “evil.” He is neither a beast caught up in the throes of mindless instinct, nor a God caught up in the throes of high-minded reasoning. He is a man—the pinnacle of man—caught up only in being and becoming the best version of himself.
Engrossed in post Socratic higher reasoning, Immanuel Kant said, “All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason.” But that is patently false. There are (at least) two things higher than reason: humor and imagination.
An Overman strategically uses humor and imagination to keep reason and realpolitik in check.
A strategic will to humor:
“The law of levity is allowed to supersede the law of gravity.” ~R.A. Lafferty
Regarding realpolitik, an Overman uses his will to humor to get power over power itself.
Nietzsche’s Will to Power was a groundbreaking moment in philosophy. It paved the way for the future of self-empowerment and earth-based thinking. It built a bridge upon which we can at least begin the journey toward the ideal of the Overman (Übermensch).
But there’s a fly in Nietzsche’s ointment. It takes itself too seriously. It’s too rigid and attached to raw power. It’s too prideful and oriented with the bloodiness of realpolitik. It’s heavy-handed and heavy-hearted. Otherwise, it’s brilliant. Otherwise, it’s perhaps the most important idea in philosophy since Socrate’s higher reasoning.
But what if there was a way to take the fly out of the ointment? What if there was a way to take all the glorious empowerment of Nietzsche’s will to power but then leave all the self-serious attachment to pride and power behind? What if there was a way to practice self-empowerment with a good sense of humor? And what if we could use this heightened sense of humor as a launchpad for even higher humor, and even greater power?
That’s where the Will to Humor comes in.
The will to humor gives us power over power (realpolitik) because it keeps humility ahead of hubris. It is a way to resolve the dilemma of power—both the power of the authority that outflanks us and our own power to do what we feel like “because we can.” It turns the tables on might makes right with the realization that might is a joke at best, in the grand scheme of things, and that there is neither right nor wrong for the same reason.
Through the will to humor we discover our vital contribution to Cosmos: Presence. The will to humor engenders presence by prompting us to search for inner meaning. Not in a codependent way, rigid and clinging to some higher reasoning. Nor in an independent way, fierce and overwhelming the world “because we can.” But in a detached way, open and flowing. Meaning becomes an act of lighthearted creation rather than an act of raw power.
The will to humor is radicalized virtue. It radicalizes courage, moderation, wisdom, justice, curiosity, and honor. Through radicalized virtue comes a heightened state of lightheartedness, a sense of play so powerful it gains power over Power itself.
With this power over power, those practicing the will to humor are compelled to turn their power outward. First as laughter, second as expiation, and third as prestige.
A strategic will to imagine:
“All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher.” ~Ambrose Bierce
Regarding reason, an Overman uses his will to imagine to get power over reason itself.
Reason is important. But it will never be more important than imagination. For reason without imagination has the tendency to fall in upon itself. It eats itself in the maw of its own perceived “truth.” Given enough rope, reason will hang itself in the shadow of its own unwavering ideal. Reason will drown in its own reasoning. That is, unless imagination can regain the upper hand and pull it out of deep water.
The will to imagine gives us power over reason because it is a way to transcend the dogmatic trap of our ideas and ideals. It’s a way to rise above the confusion of the religious blender. It is a way to detach ourselves from the cosmic joke. A way to rise above our mortal dread by assimilating it into our mortality. It’s a way to go meta over our self-seriousness, our higher reasoning, and our propensity to put all our eggs into one basket.
The will to imagine is a way of stretching reality beyond might or reason. It’s a way of transcending the human condition by fully immersing ourselves in it. Dipping our conceptual toes into the uncharted waters of ideas, some find a vast ocean of knowledge while others fall into the endless pit of fantasies (dogma).
An Overman uses a good Dionysian imagination as a lifeline out of the Apollonian pit of ideals. So as not to remain blinded by the light. So as not to get lost in the abyss of a thousand and one clashing dogmas. So as not to fall victim to the tyranny of reason.
Through a deep and curious imagination, he gets above it all—all the pettiness, the placation, the woe-is-me pity party, the codependent expectation—he becomes enigmatic, otherworldly, heroic. He’s able to untie Gordian Knot, flip scripts, turn tables, ditch dogma, reinvent God, and reimagine Imagination itself.
Through the will to imagination, he’s able to stay ahead of the curve. Bias is squashed. Circular reasoning is straightened. Cognitive dissonance is curtailed. Ideologies are flattened. The mind opens, and he is free to fly into the Mecca of going Meta.
If imagination is superior to reason, only a good sense of humor is superior to imagination. He who is flexible in imagination and humor molds the world to himself. He becomes an Overman. And he does so despite either the realpolitik or reasoning of other men.

The German parliament has given the green light to partially legalize marijuana for recreational personal use, ushering in some of Europe’s most lenient cannabis regulations. The substance was made legal for recreational use in Malta and Luxembourg in 2023 and 2021, respectively. The Netherlands, on the other hand, which is renowned for having lax marijuana laws, has started toughening up on sales to visitors and nonresidents.
The German approval came following a landmark vote in the Upper House, or Bundesrat, where legislators endorsed the measure. Once the new regulations take effect on April 1, 2024, individuals will be allowed to obtain up to 25 grams of marijuana per day through regulated cultivation associations. Additionally, they can cultivate up to three cannabis plants.
While this move represents a progressive stance, especially in comparison to neighboring countries, the law still prohibits cannabis possession and use for individuals under the age of 18, maintaining a degree of caution.
The journey toward approval wasn’t without its challenges. Internal conflicts arose over the marijuana issue within the alliance, which includes the Greens, the Free Democratic Party and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats. The initial plan to allow cannabis sales in shops was thwarted by the European Union, leading to the formulation of a secondary law aimed at piloting such sales in specific regions.
Ahead of the vote, Karl Lauterbach, the health minister, urged parliamentarians to support the contentious law, citing a surge in youth marijuana consumption sourced from the illicit market. However, opposition voices, such as Simone Borchardt from the Christian Democratic Union, raised concerns about the potential health risks, particularly for young people. Borchardt criticized the coalition government, accusing officials of prioritizing ideology over the nation’s interests.
Despite having already been passed by the Bundestag last month, the legislation still required Bundesrat approval, which it successfully obtained.
Advocates of the measure, such as the German Marijuana Association, highlighted the dangers associated with black-market marijuana, which can be contaminated with various substances, including heroin or synthetic cannabinoids.
Steffen Geyer, head of Berlin’s Hemp Museum, hailed the bill as a move toward a more reasonable and tolerant marijuana policy. Opponents of the law, however, pointed out that cannabis use among the youth might have negative consequences on the central nervous system and raise the risk of schizophrenia and psychosis.
The new regulation is still polarizing public opinion: a recent YouGov survey found 47% in favor and 42% against. This is a reflection of the ongoing discussion about legalizing cannabis and the necessity for rules that strike a balance between protecting individual liberties and public-health issues.
The legal changes to marijuana laws in Germany could eventually open opportunities for established companies such as Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: CGC) (TSX: WEED) that have set their sights on expanding beyond their primary markets.

It’s official – adult use cannabis became legal in Germany on April 1st, 2024. Adults 18 and older may now partake in the newly established freedoms created by the implementation of the first pillar of the CanG law.
Oaksterdam is proud to have played a small role in Germany’s legalization. In December, 2022, a German delegation made up of all six parties in the country’s parliament visited Oakland, Calif. to discuss cannabis policy, public health and safety. Oaksterdam University Chancellor Dale Sky Jones helped to host the delegation. At the time, she said she was confident that Germany would eventually legalize adult use cannabis, and that she has high hopes for international trade of the plant.
“I am more heartened than ever that we can not only trade cannabis and hemp like any other commodity across the globe, but that we can do so in a forward-thinking, ecologically, net positive way,” she said.
Now that cannabis is legal, read more about what you need to know from our friends at ICBC here.

Bongs, chillums, dabbers, and vaporizers. We have invented increasingly imaginative ways to enjoy cannabis in the most original and healthy way possible. In ancient times, obviously, we did not have the means to fully understand all the properties of cannabis and the reasons why this plant is so special, which is why it was consumed in its most basic form, that is, through the of the entire plant. So for the ceremonies, the leaves and shrubs, and luckily also the tops, were burned, but as they were only a small part of the entire plant, the experience was certainly altered and less powerful. With time and in-depth studies, it has been possible to better understand which characteristics of cannabis interest us, thus being able to fully exploit them and create suitable tools to enjoy the plant in the purest and safest form possible. This is a short list of the most popular and effective accessories for enjoying cannabis to the fullest.
Bong
The bong is one of the most famous tools among smokers. Anyone who has smoked at least once, indeed probably even those who have never smoked in their life, will surely have at least heard of this object, and for a valid reason. It is a cylinder that can be made of glass, plastic, or ceramic, open on the top, with a small hole on the side, a brazier on the side opposite to the hole, and a “tank” on the base where water or ice can be placed. Once the brazier has been loaded and lit, you must inhale by placing your mouth on top while keeping the little hole closed with your finger. The accumulated smoke passes through the water, which cools it and stores it inside the cylinder. Once the bong is filled, you unplug the hole and inhale deeply. In this way, the smoke inhaled in a simple puff is certainly not small, but it is definitely cleaner.
The bong with its simple and practical design guarantees powerful and well-filtered tokes, therefore less irritating to the mouth and throat. The advantages are different, there are all types and materials, each with its own characteristics, from pocket-sized to 2 meters high, and this object always guarantees devastating effects with excellent filtering. This happens because the water retains ash residues and other impurities that we instead inhale with normal card-board filters. But don’t we run the risk of also retaining the active ingredient by filtering it with water? Well, no, because tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) molecules are hydrophobic, that is, they are not soluble in water: their structure does not allow them to bind with water molecules. The bong is a reliable tool that can satisfy the needs of the most avid smokers in many ways. From size to price, this object can vary a lot, but its effectiveness is unique.
Chillum
The chillum is among the oldest tools for smoking cannabis, with origins as mysterious as cannabis itself. In fact, it is not known with certainty who first used the chillum. The first reliable sources regarding its use date back to the 18th century. Indian holy men, Hindu monks, used the chillum in their rites to invoke Shiva and share hashish with the deities. In the 1960s, the chillum enjoyed renewed popularity again, thanks to its ability to evoke mystical and spiritual atmospheres. In fact, just like in ancient shamanic rites, the chillum was often used by several people gathered in a circle, increasing the sense of unity and family between them.
Even today, it is among the favorite methods of consumption among people of that generation. But what exactly is the chillum? It is a cone, usually made of wood, ceramic or glass, with a brazier on top and a hole for the mouth on the other end. Its structure is very simple and ensures very powerful effects to consumers. Once the brazier has been loaded, a filter must be applied to the mouthpiece, which can be made of cloth or thin paper. Once ready, light the brazier and inhale. The effects are multiplied compared to the simple joint.
Vaporizer
The vaporizer, on the other hand, has a much more recent history, this new way of consuming began to spread no more than 30 years ago: there were only a few types of vaporizers, which were not very widespread and quite expensive. Today we have stick vaporizers suitable for hashish, concentrates, and marijuana, which are portable and discreet, whereas once only “the volcano” existed. But how does the vaporizer work? This tool has revolutionized the way of consuming cannabis, for the simple but essential fact of being able to heat marijuana without burning it, but enough to still be able to smoke the active ingredients. This feature is very important for our health because it completely eliminates the risk of inhaling smoke into the lungs. In recent years, has also taken hold in the tobacco market for this very reason.
Over the years, numerous types of vaporizers have been put on the market, from the aforementioned volcano to the most modern concentrate vaporizers, but they all work more or less in the same way. The herb is loaded into the heating chamber, that is, where the heating element raises the temperature to the point of vaporizing the terpenes, trichomes, and without burning the herb. In this way, the combustion residues, which are harmful to our health, such as tar and carbon monoxide.
Modern vaporizers are very discreet, and their shape recalls that of a cigarette, so they can be placed directly in the mouth and inhaled normally, while the first models required a long time to heat up and specific smoking techniques. The volcano, for example, is called this way precisely because of its shape and its functioning. The heating chamber is placed on the “crater” of this volcano. While the contents heat up, a plastic bag is applied over the top, which stores the released steam. Once this process is finished, this bag full of THC vapor is ready to be emptied.
Dabber
Dabbing is a method of consuming cannabis that mainly involves concentrates, such as budder, crumble, or wax. This item is a cross between the classic bong and modern vaporizers. The operation and shape are very similar to those of the bong, it is a glass cylinder with a tank at the base and a “brazier” called a nail, which is used to place the concentrates. Usually, to be able to smoke, concentrates are heated with a blowtorch, but recently, e-dabs have also been put on the market. E-dabs (which stands for electronic dabs) heat the concentrate like a vaporizer, allowing us to enjoy the powerful effects of the concentrate without having to inhale harmful substances.

Hallucinogenic persistent perception disorder (HPPD) is an intoxication disorder caused by psychedelic drugs that encompasses a range of visual disturbances that occur in different time frames. The disorder also causes extreme anxiety as well as out-of-body sensations and is marked by shame as well as stigma.
There are two types of HPPD; the first is characterized by brief flashbacks, while individuals with the second type of HPPD experience symptoms that can last anywhere between a couple of months to their whole lives. Dr. Anneliese McConnell, a researcher at Western Sydney University, reports that HPPD affects more than 5% of psychedelic drug users. The condition is triggered by hallucinogen use, with LSD being the most common drug linked to the disorder.
McConnell explained that drugs such as MDMA, psilocybin and marijuana could also trigger hallucinogen persistent perception disorder. The disorder solely affects an individual’s vision, with researchers noting that those with this disorder are often aware that their perception isn’t normal.
Jack, an individual who developed the disorder after ingested a drink spiked with LSD, revealed that while he had tried psychedelics recreationally before, the high he experienced was one hundred times stronger. Once the trip ended, he had expected the visual effects to wear off, but they persisted. He described the change as feeling like one was always wearing 3D glasses, noting that nothing felt real. Jack also revealed that in the initial stages, he used to experience panic attacks that would last hours. He added that while antipsychotic drugs had helped manage the symptoms, more information about the risks of ingesting psychedelics needed to be communicated to the public.
As psychedelics continue to be heralded as beneficial for managing a range of mental-health conditions, their illegal use also continues to increase. Currently, there is no cure for the disorder. It is managed with a range of psychotropic and anti-epileptic drugs. Additionally, no research has been done to prove whether the current treatments are effective. Most studies on the disorder focus on describing it instead of looking into how it occurs and identifying individuals who are at risk.
Harry McConnell, a psychiatrist, and Dr. McConnell are the first researchers to examine whether hallucinogen persistent perception disorder has been linked to other disorders such as migraines accompanied by tinnitus or visual auras. In their statement, the father-daughter duo highlight the importance of understanding the risks of the drugs users are ingesting, be it therapeutically or recreationally, and make informed choices.
Risks of developing conditions such as HPPD justify why startups such as Mind Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ: MNMD) (NEO: MMED) (DE: MMQ) are focusing on developing psychedelic formulations for medical use. It also explains why they are taking time to study those formulations so that avoidable risks can be sidestepped.
