New Poll Finds 7 in 10 Nebraskans Want Medical Marijuana Legalized

A new poll has found that 70% of individuals in Nebraska are in favor of medical cannabis being legalized. The survey, carried out by Neilan Strategy Group, also found that the majority of the respondents would like a new alternative to income, sales and property taxes to be approved.

These findings are much like those of another poll, which determined that 80% of registered voters in the state favored marijuana legalization. Neilan Strategy Group founder Perre Neilan stated that from the results it was clear that Nebraskans were ready to legalize cannabis.

This sentiment was echoed by Crista Eggers of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, who added that she wasn’t surprised by the results because they reflected what she’d observed over the last couple of years. Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana has, in the past, tried to bring the issue before voters.

In 2020, the group gathered signatures that would have allowed its resolution to qualify for the ballot. However, the state’s Supreme Court ruled that the language in the resolution violated the constitutional requirement that such matters contain one subject and ultimately disqualified it.

Two years after this, the group did not succeed in collecting the required number of signatures after a significant funder of their cause died.

This year, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is working on two petitions. In order for their initiatives to qualify for the ballot, roughly 86,000 signatures must be collected from registered voters in the state. Additionally, at least 5% of voters from 38 of all the counties in the state must have signed the petition.

Eggers revealed recently that thus far, the group had collected more than 32,000 signatures, noting that they had already covered 24 counties.

A proposed amendment to the constitution that would ratify EPIC Option Consumption Tax to replace Nebraska’s income and sales taxes as well as property taxes may also be included on the ballot if it succeeds. To do so, however, more than 124,000 valid signatures are needed.

From the poll, we see that more than 50% of respondents support this new tax. However, business groups in the state don’t seem to share the same opinion. Some have labelled the new tax as too good to be true as well as dangerous.

The survey was carried out by Florida’s Data Targeting Inc. in the period between Feb. 7–9, 2024.  A total of 2198 registered voters participated in the survey, which gathered responses through texts as well as landline calls and cell phone calls. It should be noted that the survey had a 2.1% margin of error (plus or minus).

Cannabis companies and ancillary businesses closely linked to the industry such as Innovative Industrial Properties Inc. (NYSE: IIPR) are likely to keep their eyes on Nebraska to see whether this time round, medical cannabis will become a reality for the residents who have shown overwhelming support for policy reform.

420 with CNW – Prohibitionist States See Nearly Double Search Traffic for Delta-8 THC as Legal States

image

A recent study on the online search behavior concerning delta-8 THC says that the cannabinoid seems to be substantially more common in states where cannabis is still prohibited, based on information obtained from Google Trends. According to an analysis by CBD Nationwide, delta-8 THC online searches were almost twice as common in states where recreational marijuana is still illegal. This indicates that there has been a notable movement toward other cannabinoids in reaction to marijuana prohibitions.

A contributing factor to the popularity of delta-8 in these states is its extensive availability, both online and in physical stores such as gas stations, smoke shops and convenience stores. The cannabinoid, which is usually derived from hemp or synthesized from different parts of the plant, is legal in the United States.

According to the company, the difference in interest in the substance between states with differing cannabis laws was statistically significant, and the results were unlikely to have been caused by random chance, as evidenced by the very low p-value.

Google searches for the cannabinoid have increased dramatically in recent years, the study noted, with an 850% spike in the year 2021 alone. According to a 2023 AMA study, states that prohibit cannabis use may unintentionally promote the use of delta-8 items, a trend likely aggravated by hemp being federally legalized under the Farm Bill 2018.

The CBD Nationwide study indicated that there is more interest in delta-9 THC in states where cannabis is illegal, albeit to a lesser extent. To validate the results, the analysis used statistical tests such as Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA).

The study, however, did not delve into the specific context of these searches, leaving it unclear if individuals in states where cannabis is illegal were seeking cannabinoid products or simply researching related laws and scientific information. Legislators, activists and business interests all have different opinions about how to regulate newly discovered cannabinoids. Certain states have chosen to prohibit or limit the sale of the substances, while others support updated federal regulations that treat intoxication cannabinoids apart from CBD.

State cannabis authorities have asked Congress to take into account laws that cover a wider range of newly discovered cannabinoids rather than only CBD.

Congress is expected to discuss the issue during the upcoming Farm Bill negotiations, which have been delayed due to a short-term extension of the existing legislation.

The analysis of search traffic shows that ending prohibition and letting cannabis companies such as Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: CGC) (TSX: WEED) to operate within a regulated marketplace facilitates public health because residents will not be pushed to try alternatives sourced from gray- or black-market actors.

You Only Need To Cage A Bird If It Knows That It Can Fly

You Only Need To Cage A Bird If It Knows That It Can Fly

If It Knows That It Can Fly

by Caitlin Johnstone

One point I keep trying to drive home here in as many ways as I can is that this is the dystopia we were warned about. The main difference between this mind-controlled dystopia and the fictional dystopias in novels like 1984 is that in 1984 people knew they weren’t living in a free society, whereas in this dystopia the people believe they are free.

In Orwell’s dystopia people knew they weren’t free and had to use doublethink to stay out of trouble with their rulers. In this dystopia people have no idea how pervasively they’re being dominated by their rulers; they think they came up with their ideas, worldview and political positions on their own, when in reality those belief systems were constructed inside their skulls by a profoundly sophisticated propaganda machine without their even knowing it.

All mainstream and semi-mainstream political factions are owned and operated by the powerful, and propaganda is used to get the public subscribing to them to advance the interests of the powerful. Because the overwhelming majority of us have been manipulated into espousing one of these power-serving belief systems (they give you multiple choices depending on your ideological disposition), the more overtly totalitarian measures described by dystopian novelists are unnecessary. You only need to cage a bird if it knows that it can fly.

But make no mistake: our society is no more free than those in the dark futures imagined by storytellers. If our minds are not free, then we are not free. If we’re being successfully manipulated into thinking, speaking, acting, voting, working and consuming in accordance with the wishes of the powerful, then we’re just as locked down as we would be if we had chains around our necks. Collectively we could not be any more aligned with the will of the powerful than we already are, even if our brains were replaced with computer chips.

There is no more need for dystopian fiction, because the dystopia has already arrived. It’s here. In fact, dystopian fiction is actually destructive because it causes people to imagine that dystopia is a threat that exists somewhere off in the future instead of right here and now all around us.

We don’t need dystopian fiction for the same reason we wouldn’t need imaginary swords-and-sorcery fantasy novels if we we lived in a world of wizards and dragons. People living in dystopian societies do not need dystopian fiction, they need dystopian facts. Dystopian journalism. Dystopian documentaries. Dystopian polemics. We just need true information and reality-based ideas to counter the lies and manipulation we’re inundated with from day to day.

We cannot be free until we have used the power of our numbers to shrug off the control of our dystopian overlords, and we’ll never do that as long as a critical majority of us are unable to see how profoundly unfree we really are. There’s no escaping the mind control matrix of imperial propaganda until you can see the lines of code it is made of.

Our most important task then, at this point in history, is to keep pointing out those lines of code for as many people as possible, in as many ways as we can think of. The one advantage to this type of dystopia is that our rulers need to maintain their nice-guy free society image in order to preserve the illusion that we are free, so they can’t just come out and start imprisoning everyone who spotlights the myriad ways we are enslaved by lies and propaganda. They’ll never grant us a major mainstream platform on which to do this, but we can operate within the margins, waking up one person at a time to the reality of what’s going on.

So go around spreading the truth. Fighting the propaganda. Weakening public trust in the mass media and the political constructs it manufactures consent for. Highlighting the depravity and murderousness of the empire. Use any and all media and forums you find to be effective.

Everything you do on this front makes a difference, and don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. The propaganda machine is the linchpin of their power. It’s what holds the empire together. Without the ability to manipulate the public at mass scale, our rulers cannot rule.

Once people are no longer buying into power-serving narratives, we will gain the ability to begin working toward the creation of a truth-based society that works for everyone. But this will never happen as long as we are being successfully manipulated into believing that this model for human civilization is acceptable and serves our interests. The very first step is un-jacking our brains from the propaganda matrix.
