Study Sheds Light on How Psychedelics Affect Social Cognition, the DMN, and ToM

Research into psychedelics has revealed that the Default Mode Network (DMN), a series of interconnected regions in the brain that are involved in introspection, may play a role in how psychedelics deliver their effects.

The DMN is associated with self-criticism and self-reflection and exhibits amplified activity when people take part in tasks that require interacting with and understanding others. Conversely, prior research has found that an overactive Default Mode Network may also be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety and depression.

On the other hand, the Theory of Mind (ToM) Network has been tied to perspective taking, the ability to look outside of one’s own perspective and consider issues from another individual’s point of view.

Although both these brain regions play a major role in the human experience, playing a critical role in how people understand themselves and others, there have been few if any previous studies on how they may overlap and cooperate. Furthermore, there has been barely any research on how psychedelics affect the interaction of these two regions.

Psychedelic research is a new and incredibly exciting field of study that has the potential to completely upend psychiatry and other fields of the medical industry. Studies have found that psychedelics can treat several hard-to-treat mental disorders such as treatment-resistant depression, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with few side effects.

The recent study looking into how psychedelics impact the Theory of Mind and Default Mode Networks found something quite interesting. The BA31 and BA23 regions in the cingulate cortex, which houses the ToM and DMN, affect how these two networks overlap and interact. Furthermore, the research also revealed that the cingulate cortex may also be involved in how psychedelics affect interactions between the DMN and ToM.

Researchers discovered that psychedelics and the Default Mode Network seem to affect social cognition regions of the brain and the ToM in a similar way. This interaction with social cognition brain regions and the ToM may be why psychedelics can cause an altered state of consciousness and changes in how one perceives the self.

Additionally, the researchers posit that psychedelics may cause feelings of profound empathy and connectedness by affecting the regions of the brain responsible for emotional processing and social thinking. The researchers also found that the Default Mode Network doesn’t seem to play a specific role in the function of the Theory of Mind Network, indicating that the DMN is more involved in a wider range of social cognition tasks such as facial emotion recognition, emotion attribution and empathy.

The study findings show that psychedelics may be useful in the development of therapies for conditions caused by deficits in Theory of Mind and social cognition such as bipolar disorder, neurodegenerative disorders and autism spectrum disorders.

With many entities, such as Compass Pathways PLC (NASDAQ: CMPS), investing in developing psychedelic-based treatment, the way mental health ailments are treated could soon be revolutionized.

August Is A Month For Enjoying The Garden And Prepping For Fall

August Is A Month For Enjoying The Garden And Prepping For Fall

It’s August, and the dog days of summer have arrived. The garden is full of blooms, and many veggies are ready to harvest! Believe it or not, it’s time to prepare for the fall season.

Re-Homing Perennials

As the high heat of summer slowly wanes towards the end of the month, those clumps of early summer blooming perennials that were getting a little unruly can be divided.

Hostas, daylilies, poppies, Shasta daisies, bell flowers (campanula), ornamental grasses, and Asiatic and oriental lilies can all be split and put into new homes before the first frost in the fall.

It’s also time to give perennials in containers a bigger home so their roots stay cozy all winter. When transplanting container plants, make sure you have a pot twice the circumference of the root ball. This way, there will be enough space around the inner root system to insulate the plant from sub-zero dips in temperature.

Late August is also perfect for transplanting flowering shrubs such as weigela, hydrangea, spirea, camellia, and magnolia. They’ll have time to root during the cool fall months and be ready to show their blooms next spring and summer.

Veggies And Herbs

The August harvest of beans, cauliflower, cucumber, and zucchini has left space in the veggie patch to add more kale, a few extra broccoli plants, Brussels sprouts, and cool-loving chard and spinach.

All of the above will appreciate the cool late summer nights and be ready for harvest in time for Halloween. In August, cutting back herbs like parsley, mint, cilantro, thyme, and sage will encourage a new flush of growth for one last fall harvest.

Mulch

Summer takes its toll on the mulch and compost layers built up in the garden beds throughout the spring and early summer. They’ve either eroded or disappeared into the soil. Adding a top layer of mulch in late August offers nutrients to the earth and provides the plants a snack before they hibernate in the fall.

Add And Maintain Color

As petunias, lobelias, and other summer annuals fade, replace them with fall stalwarts like pansies and Garden Mums. Keep deadheading geraniums and fuchsia so they will last through until the first frost.

A little tidy-up of the undergrowth and fading foliage of early summer bloomers like campanula (bellflower) and the fading peony and daylily leaves is wise. Doing so will help make the asters, golden rudbeckia, bright yellow sunflowers, fall anemones, and purple seeds of the beauty bush stand out even more. The garden will look refreshed and radiant for early fall.

Winter is ending in the southern hemisphere, and vegetable gardens are being planted in time for a Christmas harvest. Another layer of mulch refreshes what’s been lost during the winter months and keeps plants cool during the heat of the growing season.

That’s A Wrap!

It’s been a full year of garden tips – I hope they’ve helped your garden thrive. The best garden tip for any time of the year is to take a moment to appreciate the hard work you put into your plants and what they give back to you.

Join me next month for the “plant of the month” as we continue to garden and grow together!

Cannabix Technologies files breath sample capture patent and detects delta 8 THC in early testing

(Globe Newswire) Vancouver — Cannabix Technologies Inc. developer of marijuana and alcohol breath testing devices reports that it has filed an International Patent Application (PCT) titled, “Apparatus and Methods for Capturing Non-Volatile and Semi-Volatile Substances from Breath.”

This PCT application covers new innovations and intellectual property related the development to the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile substances (like delta-9 THC) using the handheld Cannabix Breath Collection Unit (BCU’. The BCU allows for the efficient collection, adsorption and desorption of analytes of low volatility from human breath.

Highlights and Updates:

The company has filed a new patent for its BCU related technology allowing for effective breath sample collection from humans for typically very difficult to detect non-volatile compounds in breath (like delta-9 THC).

Cannabix’s Mass Spectrometer Breath Sampler (MSBS) technology along with BCU have been providing consistent results in the detection of delta-9 THC in breath from smoking and THC infused edibles consumption. The Company reports that early testing with Delta- 8 THC in standards, in the low 10-100 picogram range, have been detected using the MSBS technology. Delta-8 THC is present in small amounts in hemp and has psychoactive and intoxicating effects, similar though less potent compared to delta-9 THC. Since it is extracted from legal forms of cannabis and concentrated, it has been of increasing concern for law enforcement and state governments. The company is planning testing with metabolized delta-8 THC.

Cannabix is advancing discussions with industry leading forensic laboratory organizations on how to best integrate its novel MSBS hardware into current forensic testing and analysis methods.

California to usher in a new employment statute for cannabis testing that will position breath testing for cannabis as an important alternative to legacy methods.

The new PCT covers various novel methods for efficient collection of analytes of low volatility from human breath developed by the Company. This includes liquid secondary adsorption, the concept behind the MSBS, which has repeatedly demonstrated efficient capture and release of THC. This novel method uses the breath aerosol as a carrier of solid and viscous liquid particle analytes as well as a secondary adsorbent to prevent sample loss from droplet surface contact and deposition. This is a unique capability in that current methods focus solely on volatile analytes in breath, while the non-volatile components provide much more information about the subject. Cannabix has been continuously improving collection efficiency of the BCU, and sample transfer efficiency of the MSBS such that the results are comparable or better relative to conventional Liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LC-MS) forensic methods, which are time-consuming and expensive.

Breath samples collected portably with the BCU have detected and confirmed delta-9 THC in breath out to 4 hours after smoking even after being stored and analyzed up to two days after sample collection, demonstrating the robustness and utility of the method. The Company is advancing discussions with industry leading forensic laboratory organizations on how to best integrate its BCU and MSBS hardware into current forensic testing and analysis methods. Cannabix’s marijuana breath testing technologies are meeting the growing demand for new non-invasive, fairer, and more accurate delta-9 THC testing.

Significant changes in California’s employment laws have been adopted by its state legislature (known as Assembly Bill 2188 or AB 2188) whereby employers in California will be prohibited from making employment decisions based upon the presence of non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites in drug screening – these are molecules that stay in a cannabis user’s system for days, weeks, or even months after use. Furthermore, employers will need to ensure that commencing January 1, 2024, they do not make any adverse employment decisions based upon an applicant’s or employee’s off-duty cannabis use (1). Cannabix’s MSBS technology has been specifically built to detect recent cannabis use – detecting Delta-9 THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana that causes impairment – using breath samples, within 1-4 hours after consumption.

Rav Mlait, CEO, commented, “We have been steadily growing and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio in the arena of breath testing – this is testament to the ability of Cannabix engineers to innovate. Our BCU and MSBS hardware continue to show very good sensitivity due to the ability to effectively collect and desorb breath samples containing non-volatiles like delta-9 THC.”

North Vancouver Cannabis Education Expo

North Vancouver Cannabis Education Expo

The North Vancouver Cannabis Education Expo takes place from 11am-7pm on Saturday, August 26th, at the aptly-named North Vancouver Shipyards “Pipe Shop” venue.

The one-day event is expected to bring together more than 30 local cannabis producers, brands, and retailers for a day of networking and information-sharing.

Tyler Atkins of 1st Cannabis in North Vancouver, who is leading up this inaugural event, says his goal is to bring the local community together in a positive space.

“Education is the key to understanding, so we hope that partnering with brands, producers, and agencies behind legal cannabis, we can help to make a difference,” says Atkins.

This event is inclusive to all and is not put on or sponsored by any cannabis stores. The goal is to bring the community together and keep the education growing, as well as to normalize the industry.

Tyler Atkins, 1st Cannabis

“As someone who has been in the industry since legalization in the recreational market, I have clearly seen the gap in education. These events have no slant towards stores or brands and this allows the community to come and ask questions as well as giving an additional space for people within the community to connect.”

“This event was created out of love for our community and with the hopes of increasing education,” he adds. “We also see this as an opportunity to continue to remove negative stigma from the industry. We hope to see the event become annual as well as visit other cities that are looking for education and an opportunity to bring the community together and remove stigma.”

The event will feature CBD yoga, a community art project, a photo wall, a live DJ, rolling lessons, giveaways and a raffle, and an after-party at a nearby pub.

While Atkins says much of the event is geared toward those working in the space, he points out all are welcome.

“This event is designed for everyone, from your grandmother wanting to ask questions but not ready to visit a store, to your OG user wanting to talk up processing methods to pick his favourite producer, to a first-time grower that wants advice on growing their first legal plant. The goal is to have an event that suits anyone interested in cannabis. We know that even our budtenders in the industry don’t get as much face time as they would like with brand representatives, and this opens up that opportunity.”

Although Atkins works at a local cannabis store, he points out the event stands on its own.

“This event is inclusive to all and is not put on or sponsored by any cannabis stores. The goal is to bring the community together and keep the education growing, as well as to normalize the industry. Cannabis needs to be viewed the same as any other business and be represented, taxed and have the same opportunities.”

  • Increased brain absorption, with animal testing that suggests a significant improvement in the quantity of the drug being delivered across the blood-brain barrier
  • Improved drug potency, with more of the ingested product being made available to the body, requiring lower dosages for the desired outcome
  • Reduced drug administration costs, with lower dosages, meaning less cost overall
  • The masking of unwanted tastes, which eliminates the use of unnecessary sweeteners

DehydraTECH is covered by 35 granted patents, with several pending worldwide, with more granted patents anticipated in the future. Lexaria’s DehydraTECH is suitable for a wide range of product formats – including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, consumer packaged goods, and over-the-counter capsules, pills, tablets, and oral suspensions. The new incorporation of LEXX Nutra will allow the wholly-owned subsidiary to utilize DehydraTECH, or sublicense the use of DehydraTECH in various markets.

420 with CNW — Congressional Committee Leaders Call for Expert Guidance Regarding CBD Regulation

image

Bipartisan congressional committee leaders are calling on experts to offer guidance on best practices for building a framework to regulate America’s CBD industry. This call comes amid increased pressure on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to start regulating the nearly five-year-old industry that was built on the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.

The Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp, which it defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, and its derivatives under state or tribal programs. This led to the birth of the CBD industry, a sector that quickly began making millions on the sales of cannabidiol, a chemical compound produced by the cannabis or hemp plant.

Cannabidiol is nonpsychoactive, meaning it doesn’t induce mind-bending effects in users when ingested. However, CBD is said to have potent medical properties, some proven and some unproven, and many players in the unregulated CBD industry began claiming that their products had some kind of medical benefits.

Although the FDA sent warning letters to companies claiming their products could alleviate certain medical issues, that is the most the government agency has done to regulate the industry. The result is what some have called a “wild west with barely any product regulation or quality checks to ensure products are consumer-safe.

Leaders from key Senate and House committees asking for expert opinions indicate that lawmakers are finally heeding the industry’s pleas for a regulatory framework. The chairs of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and ranking committee members are leading the charge and asking experts to provide their opinions on key issues related to CBD and the FDA. The committee leaders are specifically seeking expert feedback on the FDA’s stance that there is no regulatory pathway that can allow the regulation of CBD as a dietary supplement or in the food supply.

Earlier this year, the FDA announced that years of review had found there was no regulatory pathway for CBD in the food supply or as a dietary supplement, indicating the need for a new regulatory pathway. The agency noted at the time that it was ready to work with Congress to alleviate CBD’s regulatory problems.

Congressional committee leaders are also asking experts to weigh in on the emergence of synthetic psychoactive cannabinoids such as delta-8 THC, which can be produced from legal CBD, as well as labeling requirements and the balancing of consumer access with consumer safety.

The challenges standing in the way of regulating CBD as a food or dietary ingredient may  favor companies such as IGC Pharma Inc. (NYSE American: IGC), which opted to go the drug-development route because there is a clear process that is laid out for companies seeking to develop treatments from cannabis ingredients or any other substance.
