Acquisition positions Tilray as leader in adult use cannabis beverages in Canada

(Globe Newswire) Leamington, Ont. — Tilray Brands, Inc., a leading global cannabis-lifestyle and consumer packaged goods company, today announced the acquisition of the remaining 57.5 per cent equity ownership of Truss Beverage Co. (Truss) from Molson Coors Canada.

THC beverages present a significant opportunity to engage legal-aged consumers who haven’t explored cannabis as a lifestyle, medical, or functional choice. In Canada, with over 10.6 million potential consumers remaining untapped, cannabis beverages are almost $100MM at retail. Regulatory shifts are expected to facilitate market entry for beverages, with the possibility of on-tap THC options in restaurants and bars promising substantial growth for this category. Over time, we expect the regulatory landscape for beverage distribution to evolve, with authorities re-evaluating their consumer policies. We expect this shift to fuel strong growth in the market for cannabinoid-based beverages, catering to diverse needs and occasions.

Blair MacNeil, President, Tilray Canada, said, “In addition to acquiring full and direct ownership of a stable of high-growth brands, this acquisition further strengthens Tilray’s #1 cannabis market share position in Canada and positions the company at the forefront of the adult-use beverage sector. We are excited to build upon our leading portfolio of beloved cannabis brands and to further diversify our product offerings while broadening our consumer reach and enhancing consumer’s lives.”

Beyond the cannabis industry, functional beverages represent significant growth. These beverages offer consumers the functional advantages of THC and the diverse range of minor cannabinoids. These elements provide many benefits and other opportunities that enhance the lives of adults.

Hemp Extract Protects Bees from Pesticides

Hemp Extract Protects Bees from Pesticides

Cannabidiol (CBD) is revered for its potential health benefits. Now, scientists believe those benefits may extend to honeybees as well. Researchers found that hemp extracts could be protective for honeybees exposed to neonicotinoids, the most common pesticides used worldwide.

This discovery holds significant implications for bee conservation, considering the alarming decline in global bee populations over the past 15 years, with honeybees being among the hardest hit.

Declining Bee Populations

Bees are indispensable pollinators, playing a vital role in supporting global food production and maintaining ecosystem balance. Unfortunately, bee populations have been steadily declining due to a combination of factors, including pesticide use, habitat loss, climate change, and diseases. The situation has become so concerning that it has been termed “colony collapse disorder” in some regions, signifying the abrupt disappearance of entire bee colonies.

The consequences of declining bee populations are far-reaching, affecting both the environment and agriculture. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), over 75% of the world’s food crops depend, at least in part, on pollinators such as bees. A significant reduction in bee numbers could jeopardize the production of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

What Are Neonicotinoids?

Neonicotinoids are “systemic” pesticides absorbed through plant roots. The entire plant, including pollen and nectar, becomes toxic to many insects.

Neonicotinoids kill bees, butterflies, and other creatures not considered pests. Some countries, including France and Canada, have restricted their use.

How Can Hemp Help?

The adverse effects of neonicotinoid pesticides on bees’ health include malnourishment, weakened immune systems, and susceptibility to diseases.

“Bees are dying because they are malnourished and weakened by the use of pesticides and then they start to suffer from various diseases… Bees cannot digest and absorb nutrients and then they simply die,”explained lead study author Aneta Ptaszyńska to The First News.

“There are reports that hemp extract protects human nerve cells; we decided to check whether it would be the same in the case of a bee.”

Starting with 5,000 bees, the researchers exposed a portion of the bees to CBD-rich hemp extract alongside neonicotinoid pesticides. Another group was exposed solely to pesticides.

Surprisingly, the bees exposed to both hemp extract and pesticides showed remarkable resilience. Their lifespan was comparable to that of bees with no pesticide exposure, indicating that the hemp extract may have a protective effect on bees, neutralizing the harmful impact of neonicotinoids.

While this discovery is a significant step forward, the researchers emphasize the need for further investigations to validate and refine the results. Collaborative efforts involving experts from various fields, such as entomologists, ecologists, and chemists, are needed to gain a real understanding of how hemp extract influences bee health and behavior.

Hemp Farming and Bee Diversity

The potential relationship between thriving hemp plants and bee populations is not entirely new. A study conducted last year revealed that hemp farms in central New York were supporting a diverse community of 16 different bee species. [1]

This finding suggests that hemp cultivation could have a positive impact on bee populations, potentially aiding in the revival of bee colonies.

The increase in hemp production in the United States and other countries could have a cascading effect on bee populations. Hemp farming offers a unique opportunity to provide bees with additional foraging resources, contributing to their overall well-being and potentially bolstering their numbers.

Conservationists and farmers are taking note of these findings and are beginning to explore ways to incorporate bee-friendly practices into hemp agriculture. This includes preserving natural habitats surrounding hemp fields, minimizing pesticide use, and adopting sustainable farming techniques that encourage biodiversity and pollinator-friendly environments.

The Importance of Bee Conservation

The decline of bee populations is a wake-up call for humanity to prioritize bee conservation and address the broader challenges of pollinator decline. Efforts to protect bees are not solely for the benefit of these industrious insects; they have far-reaching implications for the environment and food security.

The potential role of hemp extract in the conservation of bees is an exciting and promising development. With further research, this natural remedy could be utilized as a sustainable way to mitigate the effects of pesticides and safeguard bee populations around the world.

At the same time, it’s essential to recognize that protecting bees involves more than just hemp farming. The health of our bee populations is intertwined with the health of our environment, and safeguarding bees requires holistic approaches that address both.

Conclusion

The discovery that hemp extract may protect bees exposed to neonicotinoids is a promising development for bee conservation efforts. While further research is needed to fully comprehend the mechanisms involved and confirm the results, this finding opens the door to potential solutions for safeguarding bee populations and rebuilding bee colonies.

As scientists, conservationists, and farmers collaborate to promote bee-friendly practices, it is essential for policymakers and the public to support initiatives that prioritize pollinator health.

Los Angles Mayor Karen Bass is expected to announce a new official to head the city’s marijuana regulatory agency. Bass is changing leadership in a myriad of city agencies and recently listed the position of executive director of Los Angeles’ Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) on the city employment site.

Interested candidates have until 4 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2023,  to submit their applications for the DCR executive director position. With an annual salary of $155,681 to $276,075, the DCR executive director will oversee an agency of 55 employees and a recreational cannabis market that sells roughly $1 billion worth of cannabis products every year, a feat that equals states with older adult-use cannabis markets.

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration states that Los Angeles’ recreational marijuana program generated $236,871,994 in taxable revenue during the first quarter of the year. With California being home to what is arguably the largest marijuana market in the world, it’s no surprise that the state’s most populous city has an adult-use market that rivals established markets in entire states.

Experts predict that California will see close to $5.9 billion in medical and recreational cannabis sales this year followed by Michigan with an estimated combined sales of $3.1 billion. Although LA hasn’t officially stated whether current DCR executive director Michelle Garakian will step down, the listing on the city’s employment website has raised speculation that she is on her way out.

Officials did not respond to inquiries on the executive director’s future with the cannabis agency and the currently-open director position. Garakian was a former aide to Los Angeles’ previous mayor Eric Garcetti and accepted the position of DCR’s executive director in March 2022, replacing Cat Packer who was instrumental in the issuance of more than 1,200 cannabis-related licenses.

She inherited a cannabis industry mired in bureaucracy, red tape and delays amid claims that the regulatory agency had been given an almost impossible task and complaints from cannabis business owners.

As the interim executive director, Garakian planned on boosting communications with applicants and operators while eliminating the bureaucratic red tape that caused major delays and encouraged the growth of the illicit cannabis market. Shortly after taking the position, Agrarian said in an interview that the regulatory agency had also changed verification protocols for social-equity applicants.

These changes included using police reporting districts to prove residency, the presence of a cannabis-related conviction, or living in an area that was disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.

The surging sales of marijuana have created opportunities for enterprises such as IGC Pharma Inc. (NYSE American: IGC) to start taking cannabis drug products through the clinical development process so that patients can access those medicines through the conventional medical system as products gain FDA approval.

From Press Room Raids to Indictments,

Anything Goes When the Government Piles On

By John & Nisha Whitehead

“When players are piled on top of each other after a mad scramble for a loose ball, it’s a free-for-all. There are no rules. Anything goes. That’s because there’s nobody in the pile to monitor what’s going on.”—Mike Thomas, sports editor

What is playing out before our eyes right now should be familiar to any fan of football: it’s called the pile on, a brutal, frenzied, desperate play to seize control and gain power while crushing the opposition.

In this particular analogy, “we the people” are trapped at the bottom of that pile, buried under a mountain of bread-and-circus distractions, economic worries, environmental disasters, power plays, power grabs, police raids, indictments and circus politics.

The Maui wildfires. The Trump indictments. Hunter Biden’s legal troubles. The looming 2024 presidential election. The Ukraine-Russia conflict.

In the midst of this pile on of woes, worries and semi-manufactured crises falling with sledgehammer-like frequency, monopolizing the media narrative and eclipsing all other news, it’s difficult to stay focused on what’s really going on, and yet something is brewing.

Pay attention.

Caught up in the partisan boxing match that is politics today, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s real.

The indictments against Trump, the investigation of Hunter Biden, and the chatter of the political classes aren’t real; they are more sound and fury, signifying nothing in the end.

As Aldous Huxley observed in Brave New World Revisited:

“Non-stop distractions of the most fascinating nature are deliberately used as instruments of policy, for the purpose of preventing people from paying too much attention to the realities of the social and political situation… Only the vigilant can maintain their liberties, and only those who are constantly and intelligently on the spot can hope to govern themselves effectively by democratic procedures.”

So what is real?

What’s real is the $5,000 fine and five-year jail sentence that could be levied against anyone found driving an illegal immigrant in their car in the state of Florida.

What’s real are the hi-tech policing tools such as robotic dogs equipped with all manner of weaponry and surveillance technology that are rewriting the ground rules when it comes to privacy and security.

What’s real is the North Carolina pastor who was fined $60,000 for ministering to the homeless on church property without a permit.

What’s real is the revelation that Boston officials created and sent police a watch list of the mayor’s most vocal critics, not unlike the government’s own growing databases for anti-government dissidents.

What’s real is what happened in Marion, Kansas, on Fri., Aug. 11, 2023, when police raided the office of the Marion County Record, blowing past the constitutional safeguards intended to safeguard the freedom of the press.

Are you starting to get the picture yet?

The manufactured media spectacles, piled on one after another, have a very real purpose, which is to distract us from the government’s constant encroachments on our freedoms.

In the larger scheme of things, these individual incidents—the police raid of a small-town newspaper, a state ban on who gets to be inside your car, an outrageous fine for feeding the destitute, a politician’s use of an enemies list to silence critics—might easily go unremarked, yet they are all part of the police state’s tendency to pile on: pile on the distractions, pile on the retribution, pile on the show of force in order to completely eviscerate anything that even remotely resembles opposition.

The police state has embarked on a ruthless, take-no-prisoners, all-out assault on anyone who even questions its authority, let alone challenges its chokehold on power.

“We the people”—the proverbial nails to the police state’s heavy-handed tactics—will be hammered into compliance, intimidated into subservience, and terrorized into silence.

It doesn’t matter which party dominates in Congress or the White House: all of us are in danger from these fear-inducing, mind-altering, soul-destroying, smash-your-face-in tactics.

In this way, anarchy is being loosed upon the nation. (Well ‘no rulers’ is what anarchy really means – ed. Lorenzo)

Day after day, the government’s crimes against the citizenry grow more egregious, more treacherous and more tragic. And day after day, the prison walls holding the American people captive become ever more inescapable.

The upcoming election and its aftermath will undoubtedly keep the citizenry divided and at each other’s throats, so busy fighting each other that they never manage to present a unified front against tyranny in any form.

Yet the winner has already been decided.

As American satirist H.L. Mencken predicted almost a century ago:

“All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

In other words, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, nothing will change.

You cannot have a republican form of government—nor a democratic one, for that matter—when the government views itself as superior to the citizenry, when it no longer operates for the benefit of the people, when the people are no longer able to peacefully reform their government, when government officials cease to act like public servants, when elected officials no longer represent the will of the people, when the government routinely violates the rights of the people and perpetrates more violence against the citizenry than the criminal class, when government spending is unaccountable and unaccounted for, when the judiciary act as courts of order rather than justice, and when the government is no longer bound by the laws of the Constitution.

420 with CNW — Three States in the Northeast Set July Cannabis Sales Records

image

Cannabis retailers in the northeast sold a record number of products in July, achieving new sales records and generating millions of dollars. State data shows that cannabis sales in Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts are booming, with Maine selling $20.8 million worth of cannabis products in July alone and breaking cannabis sales records for the third month in a row.

Marijuana businesses in Maine saw more than $118 million in cannabis sales over the first half of 2022 and are on track to end the year at a record $159 million in sales. The Cannabis Control Commission reported that recreational cannabis sales in Massachusetts reached $136 million in March while medical marijuana purchases were at $18.7 million, adding up to a total of $154.7 million in cannabis sales. July was the third consecutive record-setting month of cannabis sales in Massachusetts and surpassed the $152.9 million worth of cannabis sold in June.

Rhode Island, on the other hand, set a sales record at $6.8 million worth of recreational cannabis products in July. The state has consistently set recreational marijuana sales records since launching the adult-use market last December. Consumers in Rhode Island also spent $2.7 million on medical cannabis, bringing the state’s total cannabis sales to a record $9.5 million.

While Rhode Island’s sales numbers may seem quite tame when compared to Massachusetts, Rhode Island has one of the youngest cannabis markets in the northeast while Massachusetts has the most mature market.

Consumers in the northeast are clamoring to buy cannabis, and other states in the region will most likely experience high demand if they choose to legalize cannabis sales. Connecticut still hasn’t released its July sales numbers, but like the other states in the region, Connecticut set sales records in June. Generally, cannabis has enjoyed significant demand across most states with legal markets.

Multitudes look to cannabis as an alternative treatment for conditions such as chronic pain while multitudes more prefer cannabis to alcohol as their social drug of choice. Consumers in Midwestern state Illinois spent $140 million on recreational cannabis products in July, setting a sales record for the year as well as the second-highest monthly sales since Illinois began recreational cannabis sales in 2020.

Maryland also enjoyed record sales in July as retailers sold $87.4 million worth of recreational cannabis in their first month of sales while Missouri has averaged around $4 million in daily recreational cannabis sales since it launched an adult-use market in February.

These glowing sales figures show that many more companies, such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX), are benefiting from the boom in cannabis sales since there is an entire ecosystem of interconnected industries making it possible for marijuana companies to serve their customers.

New Study Says Psychedelics Use, Mindfulness Meditation Trigger Leadership Improvements

A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology suggests that psychedelic use and mindfulness meditation may trigger leadership improvements and result in positive leadership outcomes. The preliminary study joins a growing body of scientific literature on the impact of psychedelic use on various facets of mental health.

Prior research has found that psychedelics may be effective at treating a myriad of severe mental health conditions at minimal doses and with barely any adverse side effects. Researchers have been particularly interested in how psychedelics affect the brain and whether they could leverage these effects to treat anything from anxiety and depression to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The team behind the recent study was spurred by anecdotal reports by individuals who claimed that they used psychedelic states and mindfulness to improve their leadership and achieve peak growth.

Past studies had shown that mindfulness meditation can have a broad range of effects including helping to reduce stress and improve emotional regulation, sleep, and creativity. As such, the recent study focused on the effects of psychedelics such as LSD and mindfulness on growth and leadership skills with the aim of determining if this combination had the potential to improve leadership development.

Corresponding study author and Karolinska Institute’s Department of Clinical Neuroscience postdoctoral researcher Otto Simonsson noted that although there is some research on how psychedelic and mindfulness medication can affect mental health, there is hardly any scientific literature on whether these two altered states can impact leadership development. Simonsson and his colleagues used two samples of participants with 4,867 U.S. adults and 4,865 adults from the United Kingdom from the Prolific Academic platform.

Researchers asked the participants to provide responses on how psychedelic experiences or mindful meditation affected their leadership. The researchers then broke the written responses down into classes such as “no negative impact on leadership,” “no impact” and “positive impact.”

The study reported that 43.6% of the 3,150 study participants with management positions reported trying mindfulness meditation, only 17.7% said they had experience with psychedelics, and around 10% had tried both psychedelics and mindfulness meditation. Slightly more than 70% reported a positive impact on their leadership practices due to mindfulness meditation, 28.8% said mindfulness meditation had no impact, and just 0.2% reported a negative impact.

Furthermore, 40.6% indicated a positive impact after psychedelic use, 58.0% said psychedelic use had no impact, and 1.4% said psychedelic use had a negative impact on leadership practices.

As many more entities such as Mind Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ: MNMD) (NEO: MMED) (DE: MMQ) publish their findings about the therapeutic and wellness benefits of psychedelics, these substances could see widespread popularity among members of the public.
